Blind Item: Agency Creative Has HAD IT with This Recruiter

Here’s a blind item that many readers will find painfully familiar.

Seems that a certain freelance recruiter has a certain interest in a certain creative director at a certain major agency.

The party in question has worked with the recruiter in the past, but he/she was more than a little pissed to get no response to a query about an (alleged) job opening in the creative department of a different agency.

Our PR contacts remind us that their jobs are all about relationships — and, quaint as it may sound, the same is true of recruiters.

We thank the responsible party for taking the time to write such a compelling email…and giving us yet another excuse to scroll through “angry businessman” stock photos.

Hi [name withheld],

Just following up on my follow-up email about the job description you promised to send me yesterday. My guess is that my salary requirement was too high for the position, which is fine, but would it really have been that hard to let me know? Sure, for some reason radio silence is an accepted method of communication in this industry, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a pretty awful way to treat someone. You’d think that a recruiter like you, whose professional livelihood depends on their network/rolodex, would value maintaining connections more.

Remember a few years ago when you were recruiting me for that eBay-offshoot company, or have you forgotten? I haven’t. To refresh your memory: my interview went very well and we were negotiating salary and benefits, emailing back and forth every hour or so, before settling on a number. Then you went completely silent, didn’t respond to my next three emails and I never heard from you again. Sure, it wasn’t a great gig and I found something better pretty soon after, but again, why not take a couple minutes just to let me know what happened?

To clarify – this is not about my feelings. That certainly wasn’t the first or last time I’d received the silent treatment and I have plenty of colleagues and friends with similar tales to tell.

Here’s what gets me, though – I’m in a management position. A portion of my job involves hiring people and working with recruiters such as yourself. I would think that you’d exert at least the bare minimum level of respect and professionalism towards someone who can HELP YOU MAKE MONEY. Also, many of the copywriters and art directors you’re communicating with now will be in similar positions in the future. Do you really expect them to forget or look past that time you totally blew them off a few years back?

Look, I’m sure you’re really busy. Your inbox probably gets bombarded all day and night with email from young, desperate advertising creatives. It must be exhausting keeping up with it all. So here’s what I suggest: create a Word Document with a few standard email responses that you can copy and paste throughout the day. Here’s a sample to help get you started:

“They really liked you, but didn’t think you were the right fit for the position.”

“I haven’t heard anything yet, but I’ll let you know as soon as I do.”

“They want to talk to other candidates before making a decision.”

“They just lost/won some business, so everything’s crazy over there right now.”

“They’re having a hiring freeze.”

Secret: all of the above are lies. I know this because I’m a professional liar (I work in advertising, remember?). But these are helpful lies – they provide closure, allow people to move on and help you sustain a professional relationship with them. All that with just a few keystrokes!

Please understand that the point of this email is not to belittle you, but rather to help you help yourself. Maybe if you make a commitment to start treating people better it’ll inspire others to do the same and then one glorious day in the future we can all look back and have a laugh about back when it was an industry standard practice to ignore people you’d spent a few days or weeks building up a rapport with. Sadly, my guess is you are not up to task and that you won’t respond to this email. Just please don’t be offended next year or the year after that when you reach out about a job or a candidate and never hear back from me. I will never forget to remember.

Blind Items: Get Out of My Dreams, Get (Back) Into My Car

Today’s blind item post is more of a roundup.

  • We hear that a certain major agency (which just announced some big changes in its executive lineup) wants to rekindle its relationship with a certain major foreign automobile brand. The agency had what amounted to a quick fling with the company before losing the account to another multinational shop several years ago, and its recently-appointed leaders are hungry for new business. In fact, we hear that the agency is actively pitching future projects for the client, whose current AOR is not particularly amused…and that the CEO is personally reviewing those concepts.
  • We also hear that a major gaming company, which has worked with the New York-based offices of an international agency for the past two years, has shifted part of its account to another, smaller New York agency whose recent work betrays a certain fondness for a convicted pop plagiarist. Because this client’s PR department is every blogger’s worst nightmare, we don’t expect to officially confirm the rumor anytime soon.
  • In a not-quite-so-blind item, a copywriter working the McDonald’s account revealed, via her personal Facebook page, that the client is currently in the process of testing and naming new sandwiches and other products. This means that the chain’s recent rebranding efforts — led by Leo Burnett and focused on sentiment over specifics — are only one part of its plan to convince skeptical Americans to embrace those golden arches once again. Expect a major new-menu campaign in the months ahead.
  • Finally, we hear that a certain Southern agency, which recently closed one of its offices and may have to fight to keep its largest account, is “actively recruiting” for a new CTO despite the fact that its current CTO is still listed among its leadership team. How do we know this? Because a headhunter contacted our source directly to gauge his/her interest in the job.

Blind Item: Girls Allowed Into Geeky Boys’ Club

Which industry is more sexist: advertising or tech?

For today’s quick non-Super Bowl blind item: an unnamed West Coast shop is hosting a “makers” event for geek-ish programmers, etc. in order to spark some innovation.

Said agency wants everyone to know that the event will be “amazingly cool” and that even gross girls can come…if they so choose.

Blind Items: Clogged Toilets and Intimate Relations

Hello and happy hump day, readers.

Now is the time when we dig back through our tips archive to find the claims that no one in their right mind would ever confirm. First: according to another one of those repeat tipsters, a certain New York-based agency’s offices had a bathroom problem earlier this month:

“…the stalls are overflowing with poop.”

If this super-relevant rumor is true, it would seem that the agency in question and M&C Saatchi London recently dealt with opposing problems: the UK employee didn’t flush while the other agency’s employees couldn’t flush. At least the issue doesn’t seem to be gender-specific.

Here’s an agency ethics question from a reader to go along with the almost completely accurate stock photo above.

Reader’s former agency colleague has since moved on to a bigger gig as a consultant overseas. Good enough — but when this colleague shared the notes someone took from a recent presentation on the old social media, reader noticed that:

“…the presentation contained content that was lifted, word-for-word, from the old agency’s deck.”

Reader knows this because reader has a copy of the deck to which he/she refers from time to time…for reference, not as a source for new “thought leadership.”

The question: should reader call out former colleague or just sit in silent judgment of an industry professional swiping someone else’s work and calling it their own?

If you’re hungry for a bit of dirt, this classic from the Blind Item file contains some facts about a certain mid-sized agency owned by a certain major holding company in a certain city that may or may not be New York. The agency:

  • Compiles “dossiers” on the bad behavior of its own executives
  • Uses random drug tests to get rid of unwanted employees (if they refuse to take the test, the axe falls)
  • Gets rid of “disappeared” victims by cleaning out their offices in the middle of the workday with no warning to co-workers
  • Has far more than your usual share of paranoia, backstabbing and tests of loyalty to top leaders

From the Spy line, one tipster asks, “Is this a joke or is Don Draper hiring?” Seems pretty standard from the get-go until you get towards the finish line, which could seem Draper-esque. Not sure if this is the normal job description nowadays for an agency executive administrative assistant but seems a bit much, no? Anyways, we checked the link sent to us and it appears legit. You be the judge:

  • “Manage the inbox of the General Manager, file and deal with responses as requested

  • Maintain calendar and proactively work to resolve scheduling overlap or changes at short notice

  • Organize meetings and events

  • Type letters, memos, presentations, faxes, meeting minutes, etc. as required

  • Make and manage travel arrangements using BCD’s web travel portal

Blind Item: Is Holiday Party Time Dead?

From our distant view, it appears that the agency holiday party scene is a bit quieter this year than most. Then again, maybe we’ve just lost our luster, but this little note from a notable agency was sent our way from a seemingly distressed soul who prefaced his or her tip with “Christmas is cancelled at <redacted>.” We’re not sure if things are more low-key this year, but is your agency sending memos like this? Perhaps our tipster is being a bit oversensitive, but feel free to chime in.

“This is to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and, as it coincides, Chanukah.

To remind, we are closed tomorrow and Friday  in observance. As the roads are slick  and storms persist please use your discretion in departing this afternoon, but safety first is the primary concern.

You may have noticed that we have yet to send a Hold the Date for the Holiday Party. Given how short the post-Thanksgiving period will be, only three weeks, we’d like to postpone the party until later, in 2014 when we hope to have some good things to share and time to enjoy it.

So for now, rest up over  Thanksgiving, know that we’ll have a sprint to the finish line and after the  break can return to a New Year and a chance to celebrate the possibilities.

Blind Item: SF Management Supervisor Crowdsourcing Love

Ahh yes, what better time to dust off the ol’ blind item category than with this little ditty that showed up in the tips box last night. A management supervisor at a certain fairly well-known San Francisco agency appears to be on the hunt for a husband, and by golly, she’ll crowdsource if she has to in order to land one. Is she “wookin pa nub” in all the wrong places? Well, only time will tell we suppose. As you’ll see below, there’s $10,000 up for grabs if it all works in the end. We’ve redacted the name, though, as we don’t to add insult to injury if this idea backfires (we’ve been told though that this is “dead serious” and that she’s “already gotten 100 potential dates”), so read on and take your guesses.

I just finished the book “Lean In.” And whether you’re a fan of this feminist social movement is neither here nor there. What is here is an idea that came to me after reading this book. (However, in 2005 the freshman class of my sorority did say that Charlize Theron was my doppelganger. Yes, we might have been hazing them. Yes, they might have been blind folded. But they said it.) So yeah, I’m not Kate Upton. You get the point.

And so I’m writing you today because I’ve decided to make an aggressive action plan on finding that one fella that I get to hang out with forever. And I’ve recognized two things that are important to this plan: (1) a great percentage of marriages are the result of introductions by friends and (2) most people do not give a lot of thought about introducing one of their single friends to another one of their single friends. I get it. Introducing me to my husband is just not high on your to-do list. But I think I have an idea that might change that…

I will personally give ten thousand dollars to the friend who introduces me to my husband.

Blind Item: Nothing Like an Agency Salary Freeze

It’s time to dust off the blind item category once again as we received a couple of tips on this and are still checking in on things, but since we’re getting the cold shoulder, figure it’s best to leave it our readership to decide. Here’s the last word from the Spy line that we received over the weekend. Feel free to weigh in. Names have obviously been redacted, but it does involve a holding company you’re all familiar with and one employee (at least) who seems to have had it.

“[Redacted} ad agencies continue to be on salary freezes. Some employees haven’t had a raise in 4-6 years. [Redacted] profits continue to rise, as does executive compensation. But for 95% of employees, wages have actually gone down when you factor in real increases like medical, dental premium increases, etc.”

Hmm, maybe it was that pesky payroll tax that played into the mix? Whatever the case, we’ll keep looking into this.

Blind Item: Frustrated Employee Sounds Off on CMO

It’s that time again to dust off the ol’ blind item category. While the overall tone of this note gives one the sense that someone’s trying to light a fire,  you can pretty much tell that the author is on their way out the door one way or another. Anyhow, this alleged note sent by a frustrated staffer to his/her CMO at a rather well-known national retail chain mentions a couple of names that we’ve redacted, but you get the gist that whoever typed this up intended to go out guns blazing. Read on and feel free to weigh in if you’d like.
