DDB, Doremus Tout Benefits of Glass for O-I

Doremus and DDB Columbia have released a new campaign for O-I, the largest manufacturer of glass packaging in the world, touting the benefits of glass over cans and plastic.

While a campaign for glass bottles may sound like a pretty boring proposition, the agencies do a good job at keeping things entertaining. In the above spot, probably the best of the bunch, a group of friends get glass envy when they realize the shortcomings of clunking beer cans together. In other spots a man stranded on an island has poor luck sending a distress signal with a plastic bottle and a guy’s cardboard box of whiskey ruins his chances with a lady. While the spots vary in effectiveness and entertainment value they largely do a good job at showing the benefits of glass over other options in inventive ways. The ads broke online earlier this month and will extend to television in Colombia and Peru later this week. (more…)

These Ads for Glass Bottles Are About as Hilarious as Ads for Glass Bottles Could Be

A world without glass would be pretty soulless.

That’s the main takeaway from these new TV ads that Doremus and sister shop DDB produced for O-I, the world’s largest manufacturer of glass packaging (mostly bottles, but other packaging too). They’re part of O-I’s ongoing “Glass is Life” campaign, which began three years ago with a business-to-business focus but now targets consumers.

Doremus, a b-to-b specialist, is something of a glassvertising expert, too—having made the awesomely peculiar “Brokeface” campaign for Corning’s Gorilla Glass NBT. But the agency doesn’t have a presence in Latin America, so it turned to Omnicom Group sibling DDB Colombia for help, and together they’ve created five fun, memorable ads.

The basic premise is that plastic and aluminum are no substitute for glass, whether you’re toasting at a bar, serving up water to a bikini-clad babe or desperately trying to push an S.O.S. message out to sea.

The ads first appeared online and will extend to TV this week in Colombia and Peru.

Spike DDB Looks Fancy in a Cadillac

Given all the recent drama surrounding the Cadillac account and the fact that it’s the end of the day on a Friday, we thought it would be a good time to look at some alternate work for one of the company’s campaigns.

Here, then, are two spots from Spike DDB – yes, the one run by Spike Lee and based nowhere near our neighborhood in Brooklyn — to promote the new Cadillac ATS sedan.

The first one, “Coding It”, seems to be about professional responsibility:

Note the old, corporate dude and his subtle nod of approval.

So you can away with using the word “chiseled” outside the Twilight fan fiction universe.

Staffing Cuts at DDB Chicago

DDBiconSQ

We don’t have much in the way of specific details, but we can confirm a tip we received this afternoon: a round of layoffs occurred at DDB Chicago today.

We hear that 2-3 percent of the agency’s Windy City workforce received the equivalent of the “pink slip” this afternoon; given the size of DDB’s Chicago office, that puts the total on the low end of the 15-30 employee range.

There’s no word on which departments were hardest hit, but we do have some clues: the unfortunate changes came about due to two large clients, and the news does not come as a complete surprise in either case.

Etcetera/DDB Launches ‘The People Network’ for TNT

Amsterdam-based international agency Etcetera/DDB has a new integrated campaign for TNT, introducing the new tagline, “The People Network.”

For a 50-second broadcast spot, Etcetera/DDB created a delivery truck made out of people. As traffic builds up heading into a tunnel, the people break away and run with packages through the tunnel, reassembling once the traffic dies down, as a boy looks on amazed. The campaign took 100 days for Etcetera/DDB to create, from ideation to execution, working closely with TNT. It rolls out in eight key markets this week, with the broadcast effort supported by digital, OOH, direct, promotion, print and radio components, eventually rolling out in 30 different European countries.

Dick van der Lecq, MD of Etcetera said, “Previously customers bought products or brands. Nowadays customers consciously buy a company. The DNA and the people behind the brand. Talking to dozens of TNT employees showed us the only way to express their attitude towards clients: the human transport company. A ‘human truck’ captures that belief in the TV-commercial in one sight.”

Stick around after a jump for a look at the making of the human truck in the spot. (more…)

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Logos Are Ingeniously Redesigned for Breast Cancer Awareness

Ask anyone you know how they feel about boobs, and I’m pretty sure it will be positive. Indeed, you’d have a hard time finding anyone hesitant to sing their praises.

Below is a fun series of ads from DDB Singapore timed to Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. They’ll hit close to home for anyone who uses social media on the regular, and happens to have breasts, or knows anyone who has them (and wants them to be healthy). The familiar logos have been redesigned to anatomically pay homage to breasts and remind you to perform an exam—on yourself, or someone you care about—as frequently as you check your social feeds.

The ads, for the Breast Cancer Foundation, also point to an online petition urging social media giants Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to actually change their logos temporarily for the cause. So, check out the ads below, and consider a screening so you can live longer to keep liking and faving.

adam&eveDDB See ‘Gliding Lights’ for Sony

The latest spot advertising Sony’s newest smartphone goes well beyond your standard product demo.

The ad, created by adam&eveDDB as part of the brand’s “demand great” campaign, shows us an (almost certainly exaggerated) sequence starring several well-lit skiiers and the best cover of Kavinsky’s “Night Call” to date:

The spot looks like an attempt to position the phone itself — which has not been released yet in the U.S. and will probably make its first appearance stateside in October a mere six-plus months after its predecessor’s debut — as a superior alternative to better-known competitors.

We’re not sure about all that, but the visuals are impressive.

DDB Does Mom/Dad Humor for Breyers

As if we needed further proof that 90?s-style R&B is history’s most resilient genre (even when performed by painfully white people), here’s a little skit created by DDB to position client Breyers’ gelato as the kind of naughty treat that mature adults indulge in when the kids aren’t watching.

In order to remind everyone how silly the idea of gelato as a vice really is, the copywriters made sure to point out the inanity of the sad pleasures that parents (apparently) allow themselves to enjoy: HBO and a frozen dessert that contains about 35 percent of the fat of, you know, the real stuff.

DDB Debuts Skittles’ First Ever Halloween Ad

It seems odd that there’s never been a Halloween ad for Skittles. While the brand may not have the same kind of association with the holiday as, say, Reese’s, it still commands a good deal of exchange value for kids swapping trick or treat hauls. And yet DDB Chicago’s new Halloween spot, extending the brand’s “Experience The Rainbow” campaign, is the brand’s first foray into Halloween advertising.

As you might expect, the ad contains the level of weirdness associated with that campaign, and the brand’s advertising in general. When a boy finds himself stuck in a giant spiderweb, attempting to reach a bag of Skittles, his friend wonders what to do. Then a giant spider shows up, promising to help if he gets stuck, and thus begins a lifelong friendship…or does it?

The spot is rolling out as a 15-second broadcast spot and an extended, 45-second online video (featured above), and will run until Halloween. (more…)

DDB &Tribal Introduces KLM’s Lost & Found Team Mascot

DDB & Tribal Worldwide, Amsterdam introduces KLM’s Lost & Found Team with a new video highlighting the team’s adorable canine mascot.

Since KLM receives 40,000 questions via social media every week, and many of them relate to missing items, the company decided to set up a dedicated Lost & Found team. The team “uses all available information like seat numbers, phone numbers and public social media details to reunite passengers with their belongings.” DDB & Tribal decided they were missing something, however: a search dog.

“We were told that the members of KLM’s Lost & Found team sometimes track down passengers before they even realize they’ve lost something,” said Alex Herwig and Jeroen Thissen, creatives at DDB & Tribal Worldwide. “We feel they are a bit like detectives. So to illustrate that KLM goes above and beyond for their passengers, we decided to involve a search dog.”

In the video, the search dog can be seen reuniting passengers with missing items, training and getting friendly with KLM staff. It’s worth a quick 90 seconds for a look at KLM’s mascot in action, but if you want to skip the introduction and get straight to the canine cuteness, skip to around the 30-second mark or so. (more…)

350e6c1

David Leonard, national president and chief operating officer of DDB Canada announced today that the agency has appointed 17-year DDB veteran Cosmo Campbell as its new chief creative officer. Campbell replaces Kevin Drew Davis, who is transferring to DDB Chicago to serve as senior vice president, executive creative director on the McDonald’s US business.

Dean Lee, who has served as executive creative director alongside Campbell at DDB Canada Vancouver, will now take over on a solo basis. DDB Canada Waxes Nostalgic for Nordstrom

DDB Canada has a new campaign for Nordstrom entitled “Shoes That Move You,” that takes a nostalgic look back at customer’s childhoods.

In “Cardboard Box,” for example, a voiceover says, “When you were young, you could see endless possibility inside of a cardboard box…” over whimsically shot scenes of children making imaginative use of cardboard boxes. The spot then cuts to a woman opening up a box of Nordstrom shoes, as the voiceover finishes “…some things never change.” This transition is handled well, suggesting to the viewer that the woman at the spot’s conclusion is the cardboard astronaut from the previous shot. In the similarly-themed “Cake,” meanwhile, Nordstrom shoes are likened to getting the biggest slice of cake at a party. Both spots aim to capitalize on the cute factor, while making customers associate the brand with fond childhood memories. (more…)

Hans and Franz Pump It Up in DDB’s Latest #DoubleCheck Spot

Just in time for the start of football season comes the possibly anticipated Hans and Franz #DoubleCheck spot from DDB — a follow-up to the “makin’ copies” ad that aired during the MTV VMAs.

Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon’s classic SNL characters surprise Aaron Rodgers’ “Discount Double Check® Guy” in the gym and offer to pump up his workout as a token of thanks:

The nostalgia is effective in this spot, probably because Hans and Franz was always a better skit than anything involving Rob Schneider.

adam&eveDDB Shoots Slow-Mo Kitty Pics for Temptations

The latest spot from adam&eveDDB reminds us that our feline friends aren’t just grumpy…and they’re definitely not lazy.

They’re extreme athletes.

The purpose of the ad is to promote client Temptations’ new “Tumblrs” product, or the most effective method we’ve seen for turning cats into dogs.

From the press release, these treats disguised as toys, which are “designed for owners to toss and roll”, can provide you with “a new way to bond” with your kitty. Marketing speak translation: “We created TEMPTATIONS TUMBLERS to help owners easily engage with their cats.”

We get it — and the superimposition of athletes over kittens is a nice aesthetic touch, though we’re dog people through and through.

Now someone please create a product that will stop our puppy from emitting the kind of low-level howl that screams “pay attention to me!” at 5:45 every morning.

DDB California Names Todd Grantham President, CEO

DDB California has named Todd Grantham as the agency’s new president and CEO, based out of the agency’s San Francisco office, Adweek reports. Grantham fills the role vacated by Mike Harris in June.

Grantham arrives at DDB California from Goodby Silverstein & Partners, where he served as director of new business and associate partner. He originally arrived at Goodby back in 1996 and has held roles at the agency including  associate director of account management and managing director. He’s worked with clients such as Chevrolet, Saturn Adobe, Hewlett-Packard, Yahoo and Quaker Oats.

DDB North America President Mark O’Brien “cited Grantham’s brand experience, people skills and ‘respect for creativity’” in making the hire, according to Adweek. Grantham’s experience in developing new business was undoubtedly another factor, as the agency looks to rebound from losing Well Fargo to BBDO in March. Top accounts at the agency currently include ConAgra Foods and Clorox.

DDB’s Rodgers Townsend Agency Livens Up the Office for The Hartford

DDB’s Rodgers Townsend agency, St. Louis, pumps some life into the office (via jams) for The Hartford, in the latest iteration of its “Play On” campaign.

The agency collaborated with The Hartford, which provides insurance to small companies, for the interactive YouTube video. Viewers choose a genre of music, and then the office breaks into a spontaneous dance party, before promptly returning back to work. It’s well worth a view for a quick chuckle. We recommend “Retro Tech” and “Renaissance,” although you can’t really go wrong.

“We wanted to connect people to the message, when the unforeseen happens, The Hartford helps businesses prevail,” Steve Jones, assistant VP-marketing, small commercial at The Hartford, explained to AdAge. “This time, we wanted to do something fun and engaging that’s right for social channels and online.”

Fanny Glitterwinkle and Harmony Freebush Give World's Worst Vagina Advice in Tampon Ads

Feminine hygiene brand Carefree has released some videos from DDB Sydney promoting its new website, and they’re absolutely 100 percent not your typical feminine hygiene ads.

No mysterious blue liquid being poured onto a maxi pad. No woman in white walking along the beach looking unreasonably elated for someone who’s supposedly on day two of her period. Instead, the spots feature three different hosts—Harmony Freebush, Fanny Glitterwinkle and Stefan Van Der Blöed—who monologue emphatically about different aspects of vaginal care.

One is devoted entirely to vagina names. The hosts and their monologues are all ridiculous (that’s the point) and end with the on-screen text: “Really? For a more real take on [vaginas, periods, tampons, fill-in-the-blank], visit carefree.com.au.”

The videos range from funny to ridiculous to “watching a sex scene with your parents in the room” cringey. Stefan Van Der Blöed and his turtleneck get my vote for best videos, but you’ll have to watch them all and decide for yourself which is best.

DDB Revives Rob Schneider’s Career for State Farm

Here we thought last week’s BBDO Throwback Thursday campaign for Twix would fill our 90s nostalgia quotient for the month.

But a coming campaign created by DDB Chicago to promote State Farm promises to pack in more former Saturday Night Live stars than an Adam Sandler movie.

Here’s the first spot:

Nice to see Rob Schneider get work when he’s not busy blaming Big Pharma for Robin Williams’ suicide.

Cannes-Winning McD’s Spot Only Ran in Obscure Australian Paper

We’re all aware that certain campaigns exist to move product and, more prominently, to earn attention for the responsible agencies during awards season.

A recent debate over a Cannes winner produced by DDB seems to further prove the point: as Australian media pub mUmBRELLA noted, the McDonald’s print campaign that went on to win a bronze Press Lion appeared on April 30–the very last day for consideration–in a local paper with a circulation of about 20,000.

DDB insisted that the spots, all of which appeared in the same issue of the paper, were part of the pitch that produced the TV ad after the jump.

The pub’s editors, however, didn’t seem so sure.

Motivational Monday: ‘The Idea Catchers’ by DDB Limelight

In case you’re currently suffering through a case of the late Mondays, DDB Group Asia Pacific (@DDBLimelight) recently released a video entitled “The Idea Catchers.”

According to a blog post on the agency’s website, the video, first imagined by Regional Creative Director Andy Fackrell seeks to honor “the people behind the work who constantly observe, think and meticulously deliver thought-provoking ideas, which have had an impact on popular culture.”

In other words, it’s a defense of advertising creatives everywhere.
