DDB Does Mom/Dad Humor for Breyers

As if we needed further proof that 90?s-style R&B is history’s most resilient genre (even when performed by painfully white people), here’s a little skit created by DDB to position client Breyers’ gelato as the kind of naughty treat that mature adults indulge in when the kids aren’t watching.

In order to remind everyone how silly the idea of gelato as a vice really is, the copywriters made sure to point out the inanity of the sad pleasures that parents (apparently) allow themselves to enjoy: HBO and a frozen dessert that contains about 35 percent of the fat of, you know, the real stuff.

Ogilvy Unveils New Nationwide Logo in Peyton Manning Ad

Ogilvy&Mather is unveiling a revamped Nationwide logo with a new campaign starring Peyton Manning.

The campaign will debut Thursday with a new spot (featured above) during the NFL’s first regular season game on NBC. Nationwide’s new logo, which features an eagle as a revamped nod to the company’s original logo, appears on a flag at the start of the 30-second spot. Entitled “Jingle,” the spot features Manning repeatedly humming Nationwide’s jingle, as well as setting it to different words in varying situations, such as calling an audible, taking an ice bath after a hard practice, and chowing down at home. It’s straightforward but memorable, allowing the focus to be on the new logo.

In addition to the logo change, AdAge reports that the rebranding effort from Nationwide also includes switching to a “one brand approach.” Services the company previously marketed under names such as VPI Pet Insurance, Allied Insurance and Harleysville Insurance will now all be sold under the Nationwide name.

“We need to align the entire company behind the most powerful brand asset we have, which is ‘Nationwide’ and ‘Nationwide is on Your Side,’” Nationwide Chief Marketing Officer Matt Jauchius told AdAge.

While McKinney remains Nationwide’s lead creative agency, Ogilvy & Mather was brought in to handle a multi-year marketing agreement with Manning which kicks off with this campaign. Last month, Nationwide also signed an agreement with the NFL, which allows for more authentic NFL imagery in the company’s advertising. (more…)

DDB NY Dreams Up Incredible Bar Courtesy of New York Lottery Spot

There are a lot of bars in the state of New York, and from Brooklyn to Utica, it would cost a ridiculous amount of money to buy a round for however many patrons there’d be on any given night. But that’s what fictional Steve did. He gave a drink to everyone from the club dancer to the scarfed Bubbe, and everyone toasted to Steve even though nobody knew his identity. That’s what you can do when you win the lottery.

The minute-long spot ultimately drags a bit from relying on such a drawn-out punchline that cutting it in half would’ve been a good idea. However, “Toast” is another adequate ad for New York Lottery’s “Yeah, that kind of rich” slogan. The slogan is not be the cleverest or the simplest, but it lends itself to all kinds of silly plays on how lotto winners can spend their money. In the past, we’ve seen commercials about winners who paid for alien recreations and celebrity joke-writers.  You have to ask yourself, would somebody drop that much dough for an anonymous act of bar charity? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s certainly possible, and the next time you’re in a convenience store, you might think about it, too.
