BarrettSF Gets Librarian Steve Nash for DailyMVP

BarrettSF enlisted the aid of Steve Nash to promote TopLine Game Lab’s DailyMVP fantasy game, which differentiates itself from other fantasy sports leagues by offering short-format games that last from a day to a week.

In the ad, Nash dons spectacles and a wig, appearing as an everyday librarian who can feel like an MVP thanks to the fantasy app. “I love being a librarian,” Nash says at the start of the spot, “but some days can be a little quiet.” He goes on to demonstrate the app and how it adds some excitement to his daily routine (while getting shushed). The spot ends with the tagline, “Have an MVP day,” emphasizing the short format. It was released to coincide with the start of the NBA season. A future spot starring Tom Brady will roll out near the end of the NFL season, when many players in traditional fantasy leagues have already been eliminated. (more…)

PKT Tests ‘The Effects of Halloween Candy’ on Kids for Crest

Publicis Kaplan Thaler has released a new campaign for Crest testing “The Effects of Halloween Candy” on children.

The test is performed by a deadpan moderator who basically lets a group of children in Halloween costumes (the highlight being the little girl dressed as a piñata) binge on candy and records the results. And the results are? “It seems when presented with candy kids exhibit a pathological fixation bordering on psychosis,” according to the moderator. Oh, also, “Piñata has anger issues,” and one little boy threw up in the toilet. Whether you find this cute or annoying (or both) will depend largely on your tolerance for loud children. But then, this is targeted squarely at parents, with the payoff tagline being “Thanks to Crest their teeth are covered” following the message “Halloween candy may have an effect on your kids but not on their teeth.” Now where can we get a piñata costume? Translation Presents ‘LeBron James’ First Home Game’ for Sprite

Translation recently debuted a new spot for Sprite documenting LeBron James return to his home town of Akron, Ohio.

Entitled “LeBron James’ First Home Game” the spot follows James as a driver takes him through Akron and to Patterson Park, where Sprite has restored two basketball courts. This footage is interpersed with Akron residents discussing how epic James’ first home game for the Cavaliers will be. James arrives at Patterson Park where a throng of excited fans follows him as he sits and watches a pick up game. “They say home is where your heart is. Well my heart is here, it’s always been,” James says. “This is my first game,” he adds, before telling the guys on the court, “I’ve got next.” (Good luck with that, guys.)

It’s an emotional approach, if somewhat muted from coming on the heels of R/GA’s ad for Beats carrying much the same message. Still, aside from the awful Imagine Dragons song used to soundtrack the spot, it’s well put-together and those not already feeling overly-saturated by ads starring James (he also appears in this recent Kia spot) should find it enjoyable enough, especially Cavs fans. A 30-second version of the spot will run during the Cavs first home game later this month, and Sprite has also issued “commemorative 12-ounce cans featuring James’ likeness that are available in Ohio stores,” according to Creativity.

Superior Created The Most F***ed Up Halloween Ad of the Year for Vytautas

Halloween tends to lend agencies a certain leniency with how over-the-top, ridiculous and gory they can make their ads. Even so, Superior’s new ad for Lithuanian mineral water brand Vytautas stretches the limits of appropriateness for even this holiday, and is easily the most fucked up Halloween ad you’ll see this year.

Superior teamed up with director Tadas Vidmantas, who was responsible for this spec ad, which Adweek named “the single craziest commercial of 2012? for the ad, which debuted online yesterday. In the spot, a man is visiting his friend, who lies unconscious in a hospital bed and enjoying a Vytautas. Then he gets the idea to replace the friend’s IV with a bottle of Vytautas, reviving and, uh, arousing the friend as a nurse walks in. What happens next is unexpected, to say the least, and involves flying buttons causing considerable damage. You really need to see it for yourself above because it kind of defies description. And, yes, this is a real ad (not a spec). According to Adweek, there’s even a (slightly tamer) broadcast version for Lithuanian television. The bar for Halloween craziness in advertising has officially been raised, or lowered, depending on your point of view. (more…)

RPA Ushers in New Era for Los Angeles Clippers

In early September, the Los Angeles Clippers named Santa-Monica based RPA as its lead creative agency following a review launched in August. Now, at the start of the NBA season RPA has debuted a new campaign for the team entitled “Be Relentless.”

“Be Relentless” alludes to the off-the-court troubles faced by the Clippers in the form of Donald Sterling‘s racist comments which led to the sale of the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. RPA’s new campaign casts the new season in a positive light, as the beginning of a new era for the team, which reached the conference semifinals last year. The campaign centers around a broadcast spot, created in collaboration with Panay Films and released in both 30 and 60-second versions, also called “Be Relentless.” Filmed in majestic black and white, the ad begins by asking, “You think you know who we are?” before announcing, “This is a new game, a new era.” The spot goes on, “We have walked through fire and come out on the other side,” alluding quite obviously to the Sterling controversy while putting a positive spin on the new season as a new beginning for the team.

The 60-second version of the ad debuted nationally last night, during both opening night double headers and will air nationally again during the Clippers’ home opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow night. Both 30 and 60-second versions of the spot will also air locally in the Los Angeles market during prime-time shows, live sports programming, as well as in Los Angeles and Orange County movie theaters. The campaign is supported by print elements in the LA Times and ESPN Magazine and out-of-home media in the L.A. skyline and along major freeways.

“Our goal is to make the Clippers the most loved sports entertainment brand—period,” said RPA SVP and Group Account Director Kirt Danner.

Carhartt Plugs Rain Defender Technology, Disregards ‘Weatherman’

Carhartt’s in-house creative team worked with production company Furlined to launch a fall integrated advertising campaign promoting the brand’s Rain Defender technology, available in select outerwear, sweatshirts, pants and accessories.

To showcase the Rain Defender technology in the 60-second “Weatherman” the Carhartt and Furlined team traveled to rainy Washington state to capture arborists, dock workers, farmers, and ranchers battling the elements in Carhartt gear to get the job done. The spot opens on a man watching a weather report calling for clear skies and sunny weather. “Leave the rain gear at home,” the weatherman says, but when he glances outside he sees it is already raining. He slips on his Carhartt jacket, steps outside, and gets to work.

“…hardworking men and women trust their Carhartt, not their local weather forecast,” said Tony Ambroza, senior vice president of marketing at Carhartt. “Having gear that protects against even the
harshest weather conditions is just as important to them as their work truck, tool belt, hard hat, etcetera – they want to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at them.”

The broadcast campaign will run primarily across national sports and outdoor programming networks, and will be aided by digital support on social media and sports websites. (more…)

RTO+P Introduces ‘Planet of Triumphs’ for Planet Fitness

Red Tettemer O’Connell + Partners is launching “Planet of Triumphs” — a new online community for Planet Fitness members to celebrate their accomplishements — with a digital and social campaign.

“Planet of Triumphs” was created with the insight that Planet Fitness’ “Judgement Free Zone” allows its members to accomplish feats both great and small that they might not have been able to do in a setting where they had to worry about how they would be perceived by others. Built on the “belief that every achievement deserves to be celebrated,” the community encourages members to share their stories and accomplishments while both giving and receiving encouragement from other Planet Fitness members. Members can submit their stories via photos and videos using a selection of templates and enter to win win weekly prizes and a chance to be named “Triumph of the Week.” Those who submit before December 16th could also be given a walk-on spot in a 2015 Planet Fitness commercial.

RTO+P introduces the program in the video above, in which Planet Fitness members share their stories. Their accomplishments range from getting on a treadmill for the first time to undergoing such a transformation that people no longer recognize you. The video celebrates these accomplishments while introducing “Planet of Triumphs” and emphasizing Planet Fitness’ all-inclusive mentality. The program is also being promoted through paid digital and social media. (more…)

David&Goliath, LeBron Tout Kia as ‘Fit for a King’

David&Goliath teamed up with NBA superstar LeBron James in its latest effort for Kia, which recently extended its contract as “official automotive partner of the NBA.”

In the spot, James emerges from the Kia’s new K900 luxury sedan at some type of glitzy red carpet event. The star struck valet stumbles over his words as LeBron tosses him the keys and says “Keep it close,” followed by the taglne “Fit for a King.” Entitled “Valet,” the ad is perfectly timed, breaking today on the opening day of the NBA season. It arrives as James rides a wave of publicity for his much-discusses return to Cleveland, which was celebrated in a recent Beats campaign. At any rate, the spot aims for a stylish simplicity, letting the ride — and LeBron’s endorsement of it — mostly speak for itself. (more…)

F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi Throws Underwater Party for Skol Beats Senses

F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi has launched a new campaign promoting Skol’s new Beats Senses beer.

At the center of the campaign is a broadcast spot crafted as an homage to Skol’s blue bottle. The ad shows a bizarre, surreal party, shot entirely underwater. (There is a shark on a leash. Repeat: There is a shark on leash.) To accomplish the unique look of the spot, F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi and PBA Cinema/Produtora Associados used “strategically located divers for each actor to provide them with oxygen – invisible to the eye in the finished film.” The results are pretty unique, and well worth a look. The spot debuted, in both 30 and 60-second versions, on cable and broadcast on October 23rd and the campaign also features digital initiatives. (more…)

360i, Oreo Craft Halloween ‘Nomsters’

360i and Oreo collaborated with designer Lori Nix and production company Dream Machine Creative directors for a Halloween campaign in which the brand will release a new “nomster” made out of Oreo and other confections every day.

The mad scientist creations were crafted and then filmed in a 32-by-64 inch “Oreo Laboratorium” set, designed to evoke Frankenstein, with over 100 props (many of them handmade). It’s a pretty adorable way to get the brand on people’s mind for Halloween, and its “snackable” size (the first video is 11 seconds) make it perfect for sharing on social media. The brand also offers people the chance to “Name the Nomsters” and will feature the best names in custom digital content later in the day. Oreo’s first “nomster” creation was unveiled today, a fusion of Oreo and candy corn to make a bat-like creature. So far naming suggestions include Dunkfluffula, Count Candy Corneo and Vamporeo. The new “Smart Growth 2.0?campaign, which focuses on partnerships with Microsoft, ADC and Lenovo, debuts tonight with 30-second broadcast spots during Monday Night Football. Once again featuring the fictional Gordon & Taylor company, the spots show Barkley and company dealing with new growth as they attempt to keep up with innovation. adam&eveDDB Shows Beauty of ‘Ice Bubbles’ for Sony

adam&eveDDB has a new broadcast spot promoting Sony’s 4K Ultra HD TV with a new spot called “Ice Bubbles.”

The 60-second spot takes a look at the majestic beauty of bubbles freezing in mid-air. As the bubbles freeze, intricate crystalline patterns form inside them, and despite their almost unearthly beauty, the spot was purportedly shot without the use of special effects. It’s a clever (and visually stunning) way to reflect the kind of detail captured in Sony’s 4K Ultra HD TV.

“We were blown away by the beauty of the intricate patterns that the freezing of the bubbles’ surface was creating at very low temperature. The feather, flower and star ice shapes were so delicate and mesmerizing when they reflected light,” Leila de Blinkk told Adweek. “To bring out all these details in 4K was to almost discover a new world, that we didn’t suspect existed.” (more…)

GSD&M Targets Wedding Season for Southwest Airlines

GSD&M is launching its fall campaign for Southwest Airlines with a new spot, entitled “Wedding,” which debuts this Sunday during NFL programming.

The ad touts Southwest Airlines as the perfect partner for wedding season. While it may seem like odd timing (with wedding season just ending), invitations for weddings during the season are likely making their way out now, and people like the woman in the ad may be wondering how they’re going to make it to several different weddings without going broke. The spot takes a humorous approach, showing the woman partying it up, dancing at several different weddings, before finally resting (very) easy on a Southwest flight. “Everyone deserves 73 dollar fares,” says a voiceover, “because wedding season can get expensive.”

The broadcast spot, as well as a few which roll out later in the month, will run through December. There’s also a print campaign, shot by photographer Martin Schoeller, which features product-focused messages promoting “Bags Fly Free” and free in-flight TV courtesy of DISH. (more…)

Johnnie Walker Calls for Global Review

Gentleman's Wager

Diageo-owned whiskey brand Jonnie Walker is in the early stages of a review for its global advertising account, having just sent out requests for information to agencies, BrandRepublic reports.

Incumbent agency BBH, who has held the account since 1999, was among the agencies invited to participate in the review and vowed to “vigorously defend” the business. BBH recently appointed Joakim Borgström as creative director on the Johnnie Walker account, following his arrival from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

“The brand’s relationship with BBH has been hugely successful, with the agency producing award-winning work of outstanding creativity,” said Guy Escolme, the global brand director at Johnnie Walker, adding, “As the market leader, Johnnie Walker feels the time is right to invite selected agencies, including BBH, to look at how we take the brand forward into the future.”

Johnnie Walker has worked with agencies other than BBH, including Anomaly New York for the recent 6-minute long digital ad “The Gentleman’s Wager,” starring Jude Law. There is no word yet on which agencies, aside from BBH, were invited to participate in the review.

CP+B Gets Sweet for WeMo

CP+B has just launched the first ever marketing campaign for home automation company WeMo, taking aim at viewer’s sweet sides with a 60-second broadcast spot.

The spot, entitled “The Big Anniversary Rig” tells the story of a couple separated on their first wedding anniversary. To celebrate, the husband sets up an “anniversary rig” using WeMo’s automation, surprising the wife when she gets home with a series of romantic gestures accomplished using WeMo. Depending on your tolerance for sweetness, the spot may or may not be overly saccharine, but it’s a clever way to show WeMo in an emotional context. “The Big Anniversary Rig” debuted online today, prompting viewers to watch three separate “How Dan Did It” videos. It will make its broadcast debut on network television next month. (more…)

DDB California Built This City for Brita Water Filters

It’s pretty fair to assume that people know by now that people know that soft drinks have a lot of sugar in them, yet it’s easy to forget just how much you’re putting into your body. So DDB California found a clever way to visualize the amount of sugar you intake if you drink a soda every day for Brita.

The agency created a model city made entirely of sugar cubes. The spot starts small, by showing the amount of sugar in one soda, before showing what a soda a day for a year, and then a lifetime, looks like. “But you can help change that with a simple choice,” the voiceover says at the conclusion of the spot, “Drink more water — filtered, by Brita.” It’s a really effective way to deliver the message, first taking down sugary drinks and then presenting Brita as the solution, and, beyond that, the sugar cube city is just really cool to look at.

Cutwater Brings Intel to the Coffee Shop

Agency Cutwater teamed up with production company Cap Gun Collective for a series of comedic shorts promoting Intel’s Chromebook.

Set in a coffee shop, the shorts are based around the premise of computer problems happening in the real world. Unfortunately, the scenarios presented seem a little bit dated. In “Monotaskers,” for example, a woman at a coffee shop won’t let a man do more than one thing at a time, taking his book while he sips his coffee. “Frozen Coffee” presents a glitchy barista, which is funny in a way, but also seems removed from the current technological climate (as is the case with “Monotaskers”). Since, at the end of these spots, Intel’s Chromebook is presented as the solution, it’s as if Intel’s competition is presented as computers from the previous decade, rather than modern competitors. That doesn’t do a whole lot to represent the Chromebook in a good light, and leaves viewers with little reason to pick it up over its real-world competition. (more…)

Patrón Review Down to Two Finalists

patron

Patrón is nearing the end of its search for a new lead agency to handle both creative and media, as only Mullen and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners remain in its creative review, sources told Adweek.

Patrón launched the review back in August, and according to Adweek it originally consisted of about “half a dozen” agencies. Incumbent agency Cramer-Krasselt was invited to defend in the review, but declined. Lee Applbaum, global chief marketing officer at Patrón and the “key decision maker in the search” stated that the company was looking for “a highly strategic and creative agency partner” with “a track record of success in marketing luxury brands.” (more…)

Dutch Top Model Doutzen Kroes Stars in Cheel’s Latest for Samsung Netherlands

Cheel has released a new campaign for Samsung’s new Galaxy Alpha smartphone, featuring top model Doutzen Kroes.

The campaign is centered around a 30-second broadcast spot capitalizing on Kroes’ popularity. In the spot, Kroes is shown out clubbing with friends (according to the PR release, these are her actual friends, in real life!). Kroes finds reason to use her phone in various ways, as text such as “metal design” and “supersnelle autofocus” appear onscreen. Ultimately, it a very forgettable approach, as it seems Cheel is really banking on Kroes’ star power to carry the spot.

“The campaign perfectly illustrates the feeling that the Galaxy Alpha personifies: connected and stylish at the same time, while you enjoy the fun things in life,” said Gerben van Walt Meijer, Samsung mobile marketing manager. (more…)

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO Crafts Choreographed Spot for Currys PC World

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO has anew 60-second spot for Currys PC World featuring carefully choreographed household goods and computers.

In the charming spot, everything from refrigerators and vacuum cleaners to smart phones and computers engage in a tightly choreographed dance routine reminiscent of old-school Hollywood. Each item slowly makes its twirling exit until there is only one laptop left. “From our range of 10,000 products, we’ll help you find the one that’s just right for you,” says the voiceover, leading into the “We start with you” tagline. Set to music from The Artist, the spot evokes classic Hollywood in a fun way that shows the range of products at Currys PC World while also emphasizing their customer service. It’s all the more effective for letting the idea stand on it own, with only limited voiceover intrusion, and you can tell the agency had fun bringing this one to life.
