Why Are There Errors in the White House Logo, and How Did They Get There?

The White House doesn’t publicize changes to its brand identity. But something fishy has been going on with its logo over the past decade, according to a design agency that worked on refresh ideas for the famous mark several years ago.

Celebrities Join White House PSA Against Sexual Assault

The White House has issued a new PSA empowering people to stand up against sexual assault as part of its "1 Is 2 Many" campaign.

Seeing President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and some of Hollywood's elite (Daniel Craig, Benicio Del Toro, Steve Carrell, Dule Hill and Seth Meyers) speak out against sexual assault is heartwarming, and hopefully the use of celebrities—and maybe our collective fascination with celebrity culture—will help this message spread.

Watch the PSA and you’ll take note of how it is carefully worded: "If she doesn't consent, or if she can't consent, it's rape, it's assault, it's a crime." The important distinction of whether someone can consent is thankfully highlighted, as many sexual assaults happen while the victim is drugged, drunk, passed out or otherwise incapacitated.

The PSA also emphasizes that if you see something happening you should do something (which, duh!) and that the victim shouldn’t be blamed. "If I saw something happening," says Craig, aka Mr. James Bond, "I'd help her. I'd never blame her."

SNL Helps Obama Through Presidential Depression With Paxil Second Term Strength

Most presidents go through a second-term depression, but Obama's has been particularly dismal. To help out, Saturday Night Live has introduced Paxil Second Term Strength, a depression medication for the narrowest target market imaginable: the president of the United States. Paxil Second Term Strength makes you feel like you're giving a speech on a college campus in 2008 or getting Bin Laden all over again. It's even powerful enough to deal with symptoms from Benghazi to that time Jay-Z and Beyoncé went to Cuba. Not a Democrat? No problem. There's also new Paxil Republican Strength for when you have to answer to Congress or the Koch Brothers. It's not the funniest of SNL, but it's worth a chuckle. It also appears to be some excellent product placement, given that Paxil is a real medication with a registered trademark whose packaging and logo were used in the spot—a fact which should be far from depressing for Paxil's brand managers.

Bob Marley Passover Lights Up Hebrew Text

Rabbis around the world just collectively shuddered, but the conservative kids who struggle to sit through a Passover seder have something unique to look forward to. The Haggadah, the prayer book that tells the story of Passover, has just been remixed by Nathan Phillips, a senior writer at SS+K. You may be familiar with a Lena Dunham ad he wrote and directed for Barack Obama‘s reelection campaign last fall. Now, with the help of Art Director and shiksa Jessica StewartPhillips has unleashed a cool, creative affront to Jewish grandmothers: Bob Marley Passover.

Yes, Bob Marley Passover…as in, Bob Marley Passover. So brazen, it just might work. You can see the project site and download the haggadah here. Don’t forget to #BobMarleyPassover, which is further evidence that hashtagging has gotten way out of hand. But the haggadah itself is legitimate, if not light-hearted and full of a sense of humor bound to clash with almost anyone over 30.

CNN Rejects Obama Ad

cnn-logo

In what they saw more of as an advocacy message rather than a positive ad focusing on the historic inauguration of new U.S. President Barack Obama, CNN rejected the ad submitted for the State of the Union Address on Feb. 24.

CNN claims the ad “suggests a position in favor of the advocacy message, without having permission of the persons involved.”

Brian Burch of CatholicVote.org reacted to CNN’s claims: “This is absurd. Our ad does not suggest that Barack Obama is pro-life. Instead, we make the obvious point that Obama’s mother gave birth to a child that ultimately became the 1st African American President. This is a fact, not an opinion.”

FactCheck.org described the NARAL ad: “An abortion-rights group is running an attack ad accusing Supreme Court nominee John Roberts of filing legal papers ’supporting… a convicted clinic bomber’ and of having an ideology that ‘leads him to excuse violence against other Americans’ It shows images of a bombed clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. The ad is false.’”

CNN issued a statement regarding the NARAL ad attacking John Roberts. It stated: “CNN says, it accepts advocacy advertising from responsible groups from across the political spectrum who wish to express their views and their opinions about issues of public importance, so the viewers can further research claims made within the ads.”
