Vamika Sardana : In Conversation With A Graphic Designer

Vamika Sardana is a Visual Designer and soon to be graduate of the Strategic Design & Management program from Parsons School of Design in New York. She specializes in print design for apparel and illustration. Her design style lively, bold, full of spirit and extremely happy. About 9 out of 10 times in a day she is thinking about food. She loves creating stories through her designs and takes a lot of inspiration from her culture. She is a very curious person who uses a lot of color in her artwork but is quite the opposite in real life. She is constantly exploring the why’s of things’ and most importantly she does not think Ross and Rachel were on a break ?

Why are you a Graphic Designer?
It happened by mistake actually. I never wanted to be a graphic designer, I always wanted to be a fashion designer but when I got accepted to MIT institute of design I kind of changed my mind because I thought that graphic design is a more versatile field and also because my other college options were not as good as MIT really ?

Did you attend school for fine art or design?
For Design, I went to the MAEERS MIT Institute of Design in Pune.

You have a distinct style of Design. How long did it take you to develop your style?
Over 7 years and it is still evolving I feel. Each company or client that I worked with has helped me shape my aesthetic.
It started with Chumbak, which is where I did my diploma internship. That was my first real experience of designing for someone else and because I had to match their colorful, super detailed visual language my style started getting molded according to their style and became very illustration heavy. After that, I was lucky enough to work with a plethora of clients from varied fields, each project challenged me creatively and made me get out of my comfort zone which is when I started realizing the things I liked and the things I didn’t like in my own designs. I started noticing the patterns, fonts, colors & motifs I used constantly and got a grip on what represented me and my style as a designer.

How did you focus so much on graphic illustrations? When did you realise you loved doing it and wanted more of it?
In the beginning, it wasn’t even about illustration, I was trying to find a way to use what I was learning and my skill in fashion design because I always dreamt of making clothes, not logos. As a graphic designer, I did have the knowledge to actually construct garments, the only thing I knew that I could confidently make, something that could be used in apparel design was the prints that would go on the fabric. So I started interning with and freelancing for a lot of fashion designers who wanted to get custom prints made for their collections and because no two designers ever came to me with the same briefs, the process of designing prints was challenging, unique and fun. I realized then that this was something I could do for the rest of my life because I was so beyond happy doing it, I never thought that my work was becoming mundane, new projects always made me excited and more than anything else because I knew I had created a niche for myself in this industry.

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
My parents I would say.
My dad is a neurologist & my mom is a Pathologist, so growing up I always saw them work work work, with a smile on their faces, not because they wanted to earn money but because they absolutely loved their profession. They have taught me the importance of hard work and I am very proud of my work ethic, it is the way it is because of them. My dad has always inspired me to push myself, to do my best, to acknowledge my failures and learn from them and to not be a bitter human in the face of adversity. My mom, I would say is my superhero. She has shaped me into the strong independent woman I am today. I aspire to be like her, to love like her, to kick ass like her.

Who was the most influential personality on your career in graphic design?
Parvati Pillai. She was the Head of Design at Chumbak and my first ever boss and mentor. She is a creative genius who taught me how to have creative courage and how to use criticism to my advantage.

When did you start freelancing?
I started freelancing while I was in college but I started full time freelancing at the beginning of 2017.

Was there any time when you wanted to quit graphic design?
That thought did cross my mind during the first semester of my undergrad program, mainly because I still wanted to pursue fashion design but 6 months in I realized loosing one whole year out of a 5-year program and starting from scratch would not be worth it.

Are many advertising agencies hiring graphic designers? Do you work more with agencies or publishers or direct clients?
Advertising agencies are always hiring for designers, that is something I like about advertising firms. I, however, prefer to work with direct clients because those projects are creatively more satisfying and engaging.

Do you have clients who give you steady work or do you advertise for new clients often?
When I started full-time freelancing, I used to work on a monthly retainer basis with two of my clients and take up other projects along with those steady clients. I have been lucky I guess because I have never had to advertise myself so far, I have always been approached by the clients first.

How do you market yourself?
I try not to. I believe in letting my work speak for itself. I try to work on different projects, do the best I can and keep updating my website and socials.

Any other Indian graphic designers who you admire?
I absolutely love Mira Malhotra’s spin on Indian aesthetics & Shivalini Kumar’s unique vector illustrations and typography. I also admire the way Simmi Patel thinks and infuses humor into her designs.

What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on graphic design as a career option?
I would ask aspiring creative professionals to not be too critical of themselves. I would say, keep working hard & step out of your comfort zone and try to explore everything at least once, everything will make you a better designer. Even your last dumb client. Always take pride in your work and know your worth. Be nice but not naive and never underestimate the investment you have made in yourself to become a designer and work for free.

I think it’s a great time to be a graphic designer. The design industry is booming and people have started realizing & understanding the need for good design. Because graphic design is a versatile field and one can take the skills they want from it and make the career they want to out of it.

Do you think Clients are opening up to keeping aside a decent respectable budget for design work? Do you think clients are understanding that they need to invest in Design as a communication tool and also to cut the clutter, and that good design comes at a price?
Yes and No.
Yes, clients are more understanding now as supposed to say 5 years ago so the negotiations have become a lot better and the chances of getting what you actually deserve for a project have increased.
No, because a large chunk of independent clients still want a Michelin star meal at the price of Mc Donalds. We still have to give quotes for projects keeping in mind the very high probability of client bargaining.

Mac or PC?
Mac. Always.

Who would you like to take out for dinner?
Shah Rukh Khan without a doubt. The conversation would never end, His wit and sense of humor amaze me.

What’s on your iPod? Which book are you reading right now?
I am listening to old Hindi music from the ’70s and 80’s right now. The classics from RD Burman and Kishore Kumar on repeat ? and the book I am reading currently is the ‘ A burglar’s guide to the city’ written by an architect named Geoff Manaugh. At the core of the book is a fascinating insight: How any building transforms when seen through the eyes of someone hoping to break into it.

Whats your Twitter Handle? Instagram?
I mainly use my Website here to showcase my work.
