Applied Thinking: Agnosticism – Stuart Smith vice-president, client service, UK and Ireland, Mediaocean

Television consumption has changed dramatically in recent years due to the emergence of technology that allows consumers to watch whatever they want, wherever, whenever and however they want it. Now is the time for marketers to respond to this emerging screen agnosticism by rethinking their approach to TV advertising and meet the scalability needs of the changing media landscape.

Applied Thinking: Flaws – James Devon planning director, MBA

We strive for perfection. We want things to be lined up nice and tidy; understandable. So we measure, analyse and evaluate. We talk about virtuous cycles, failing fast and learning faster. Correctly, we’re looking for evidence on which to base decisions, to prove to the stakeholders that our plan is working.

Applied Thinking: You – Fern Miller chief strategy and insight officer, international, DigitasLBi

Apologies, data-tech aficionados, but I am not going to write about the programmatic use of data in this article. Instead, I’m going to use data the way we always have: to narrow the creative field by understanding our audience’s preferences better. The way broadcasters and TV production companies do; the way the film industry does; the way planners should do.

Applied Thinking: Unity – Dan Hulse managing director and planning partner, St Luke's

Imagine you’re an incoming marketing director. Ninety days.

DOJO and John Legend Bring the Music

To repeat the popular Mark Twain misquote, “Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

We’re not sure why San Francisco’s DOJO didn’t respond to any of our requests for information on last month’s rumor that it would soon be closing its doors or why its listed phone number stopped working, but the agency certainly appears to be operating normally: today we received two new campaigns for client Sound United’s audio brands Definitive Technology and Polk Audio.

First we have John Legend sounding “so real” in two…no three…no four…places at once:

After the jump, three spots for Polk.

Ainda bem…

Coke's Wendy Clark Will Be First Marketer to Chair a Cannes Jury

Coca-Cola’s Wendy Clark will be the first marketer to preside over a jury at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Ms. Clark, president of sparkling brands & strategic marketing at Coca-Cola North America and a Cannes attendee in previous years, will be president of the Creative Effectiveness Lions jury in June 2015, the festival announced today.

The Creative Effectiveness competition, started in 2011, is one of the few that includes clients on its jury. In 2014, under jury president David Sable, Y&R’s global CEO, five clients served as judges. They were Greg Lyons, VP of marketing for Mountain Dew & Energy at Pepsico; James Woodbridge, general manager for marketing at Burger King in New Zealand; Buenos Aires-based Maria Mujica, Latin America regional marketing strategy and communication director at Mondelez International; and Roxanne Taylor, chief marketing & communications officer, Accenture, global.

OKRP Launches Holiday Anthem for Big Lots

O’Keefe, Reinhard & Paul has launched a holiday anthem for Big Lots, which named the agency its AOR back in January, entitled “Nailing It.”

Also notable for the presence of Big Lots chief customer officer Andrew Stein, who was CMO at KMart for the infamous “Ship My Pants” campaign (and also part of the team behind this travesty), the ad continues O’Keefe, Reinhard & Paul unfortunate penchant for musical ads. At least it makes some kind of sense in this setting (Christmas carols and whatnot). Still, while the “Nailing It” song, sung by America’s Got Talent finalist Deanna DellaCioppa, goes for catchy and “provocative” it arrives at something more like grating and over the top. The broadcast campaign is supported by a social effort around the #NailingIt hashtag.

“We’re really trying to create a new edge in the work that we do that shows we’re feisty and we’re different,” Stein told AdAge. “We’ve honed in, since I’ve been here, on who our customer is.”

Staffing Cuts at mcgarrybowen New York and Chicago

mcgarry logo

We just confirmed a series of tips we received today regarding staffing changes/reductions at mcgarrybowen‘s offices in New York and Chicago.

Much of the recent news for the agency has been positive: earlier this month it won the Intel account and debuted campaigns for Verizon and Courtyard by Marriott, among others.

As of today, however, at least two dozen employees are no longer with the agency. Here’s the official statement:

“As our clients’ marketing and business needs continue to evolve rapidly, so too must we. Today we realigned our North American teams, which resulted in a staff reduction of less than 4 percent in our New York and Chicago offices.”

Tipsters held that the total number dismissed was less than 10 in Chicago and up to 30 in New York; the 4 percent quote seems to confirm the overall total if not the estimates for each office.

mcgarrybowen has seen some major changes over the past six months: Tom Sewell took over the presidency in May before the agency lost Pizza Hut to Deutsch LA, and today brought news that parent company Dentsu Aegis had purchased the London-based mobile specialty agency Fetch Media, which will work with the other agencies on its roster.

But as of this moment, we have no word on the reason behind the realignment or the departments affected.

So, What the F**k is Going on at Cossette?

Toronto agency Cossette has released a funny video in which individuals across Canada ask, “What the fuck is going on at Cossette?”

The agency managed to bring together an impressive array of talent for the video, including BBDO’s Carlos Moreno and Peter Ignazi, Chris Van Dyke of School Editing, Ted Rosnick of RMW Music, and, perhaps most surprisingly, a cameo from the Trailer Park Boys. At the end of the video, the agency boasts that they’ve been nominated for agency of the year, digital agency of the year and media agency of the year, and “That’s what’s going on.” It’s well worth a view if you have a minute for a quick chuckle, especially if you’re amused by extensive profanity and/or have ever wanted to see Cossette Co-Chief Creative Officer Dave Daga get hit in the balls.

Havas Reports Organic Growth of 6% for Third Quarter

Havas announced organic growth (excluding acquisitions) of 6% for the third quarter of 2014, with revenues of $555 million. For the first nine months of the year, organic growth was 5.8%, for total revenue of $1.6 billion.

In North America — Havas’ biggest market — growth reached 4.7% in the third quarter and 4.6% for the first nine months of the year, with Havas claiming strong performances from all its businesses in the region, particularly healthcare.

In a conversation with Ad Age after the earnings announcement, Havas CEO Yannick Bollor attributed the results to integration and leadership. He said, “We’ve done a great job organizing collaboration locally and globally. And we have a great leadership team which means the clients are happy so don’t leave us, and we’ve had a fantastic new business year.”
