Mullen Names New Top Creative in LA

Mullen has named Margaret Keene executive creative director of the agency’s Los Angeles office, AdAge reports.

Keene comes to Mullen from Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles, filling a role left vacant since the departure of Peter Rosch late last year. She will report to Mullen’s North America Chief Creative Officer Mark Wenneker.

Keene joined Saatchi & Saatchi in 2011, where her work included multiple campaigns for Toyota. Prior to Saatchi, Keene spent over a decade at TBWAChiatDay, arriving as an art director in 1996, and eventually working her way up to group creative director. While at TBWAChiatDay she worked on brands including Apple, Nissan, Levi’s, Kinko’s, Taco Bell, ABC and Shutterfly. Mullen opened its Los Angeles office in June 2013, following winning the Acura business in March of that year. (more…)

The Vault Taps Dante Exum for Foot Locker

The Vault tapped NBA Draft prospect Dante Exum for a humorous new Foot Locker campaign.

The series of 15 second spots, entitled “Everything Changes After the Draft” highlight how things don’t change after the draft. Although Exum seems to perceive himself as a celebrity, it’s evident no one else does. The approach works best on the above “Paparazzi,” in which Exum informs friends that he doesn’t want to head to Foot Locker because “paparazzi might be there,” eliciting uncontrollable laughter from his two buddies. Other spots in the campaign take a similar approach, seeing Exum practicing his autograph, interacting with a dorky neighbor, combing through “fan mail” and making a dinner reservation. We’ve included “Reservation” and “Fan Mail,” along with credits, after the jump. (more…)

Taco Bell — The New Healthy Food?

Taco Bell is modifying its Cantina menu to put a bigger focus on today’s hot food trend — protein.

The new Cantina Power will offer chicken and steak bowls and burritos with more than 20 grams of protein and 500 calories or less. The items will have 3 ounces of protein — twice the amount normally offered in a standard Taco Bell burrito. The Cantina bowls and burritos will no longer include rice and beans.

Cantina Power is a combination of the gourmet-positioned Cantina menu with its Power Protein menu, the latter of which was tested last year in Dayton, Ohio. CEO Brian Niccol said that during the test last year, consumers said they didn’t see much differentiation between the protein menu and Cantina menu, in part because Cantina already offered three ounces of protein between the black beans and meat. So, he said, Taco Bell decided to combine the two and modify the products by eliminating rice and beans and adding in cheese and sour cream. Cantina Power will replace the original Cantina Menu, which was first unveiled in 2012.

ULTA Beauty Splashes on Some Mullen

ULTA Beauty operates 675 retail stores across 46 states and also distributes its products through its website. Yet the company recently decided to spruce things up a bit with an agency review.

CEO Mary Dillon, who has been at the helm for just over a year, exceeded investors’ expectations before deciding to trade Dallas-based Richards Group for Boston’s Mullen this week.

“ULTA is focused on continuing to build a leadership brand in beauty, and Mullen’s combination of outstanding brand strategy and breakthrough creative will help us accelerate our efforts,” said Ulta chief marketing officer Dave Kimbell said in a statement.

ULTA spent $17.7 million in measured media in 2013, up from $13.5 million in 2012. The review was managed by Mercer Island Group.

Here’s the most recent campaign Richards created for ULTA, titled “Trading Faces.”
