CVS to Stop Selling Cigarettes, Tobacco Products by October

CVS Caremark, the largest provider of prescription drugs in the U.S., plans to stop selling cigarettes and tobacco-related products across the nation by Oct. 1 in an effort to support the health of its patients and customers.

CVS, operator of 7,600 pharmacy stores in the U.S., would be the first national pharmacy chain to take this step, the Woonsocket, R.I.-based company said in a statement today. The decision will cut annual revenue by about $2 billion, equating to 17 cents a share, CVS said.

The move comes as public health officials try to educate about 42 million U.S. adult smokers about the dangers of the habit. Last month, a report from the acting U.S. Surgeon General, Boris Lushniak, criticized the “fraudulent campaigns” by cigarette companies, weaknesses in regulation and a rebound in smoking depicted in Hollywood films. The study, which came half a century after smoking was first linked to lung cancer, cited new evidence that common ailments such diabetes, arthritis and impotence can be linked to tobacco use.

Diet Dew Helps You Hunt Ducks with Dale Jr. and Rail-Grind a Horse

One of my favorite ads from Super Bowl night actually ran before and after the game, when Diet Mountain Dew bought some slightly discounted time for its new spot, "Dale Call." We see a duck hunter pull out his trusty turbo-powered call, which sounds like a Nascar engine and summons Dale Earnhardt Jr., regardless of location or time of day.

I can't think of too many scenarios where that would be useful, which might be why it's a bat signal solely reserved for duck hunters. As someone who took great joy as a child in scaring ducks into flight, I feel pretty certain these fowl would have scattered and flown away instead of sticking around to get blasted, but who am I to question Dale's abilities behind the wheel?

Below, you can check out another of the campaign's spots, featuring a rail-grinding horse worthy of the X Games.

Reason Partners Goes Underwater with Credit Canada Campaign

Reason Partners has crafted a new campaign for Credit Canada, entitled “Get Out From Under,” that utilizes underwater imagery to illustrate what it feels like to face critical debt.

With household debt in Canada having reached an all time high last year, the campaign is well timed. “More and more people need help staying afloat financially, and we’re letting them know we can be the lifesavers,” said Credit Canada CEO Laurie Campbell. “We’re getting the message out that our not-for-profit credit counseling, financial counseling, and financial literacy programs promote manageable ways to deal with debt, no matter how stormy the seas.”

The simple and direct 30 second television spot, directed by Steve Gordon, portrays a (fully-clothed) woman floundering under water, accompanied by Credit Canada’s message appearing on screen: “Without making a profit or false promises, we’ve helped over 2 million people since 1966.” As the text “We’ll help you get out from under” appears, a hand reaches down to pull the woman up, representing Credit Canada lifting its clients out of debt. The imagery and message from the television spot are echoed in the transit ads, print ads, and collateral components that make up the rest of the “Get Out From Under” campaign. Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Newell Rubbermaid Shakes Up CMO Model By Putting Research in Charge

What happens when a market-research guy takes direct authority over all marketing decisions and marketers? Newell Rubbermaid is finding out.

Since Richard Davies became Newell’s chief marketing officer 14 months ago, he’s instituted big changes for the company that markets such brands as Paper Mate pens, Graco baby products, Rubbermaid storage products, Calphalon cookware and much more. He’s consolidated marketing staff and agencies and given unprecedented authority to an expanded and independent research group.

Newell’s marketing headcount is down 20% during Mr. Davies time at the helm and located in fewer sites. And Newell has gone from 65 marketing-services shops to six, which includes creative agency BBH, media shop PHD and four research shops.

Vivo e Samsung prestam homenagem a Raul Seixas
