Studiocom Rebrands as VML

vml_black.jpeg

Atlanta-based digital agency Studiocom, which has given Brooklynites the “Hand Washing Station” for Kleenex and celebrated Steve Jobs Day among other things over the years, has officially changed its name to VML, which doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch considering that it’s housed within the latter, WPP-owned network since 2005. Jon Cook, CEO/president of VML, says in a statement, “We have always had a great synergy and connectivity. Re-branding Studiocom to VML immediately strengthens our collective offering in North and South America. By becoming one company, we have the opportunity to accelerate growth and capability, without losing any of the unique Studiocom heritage, expertise or culture.”

As a result of the rebranding, Studiocom, which also has offices in Boston and Bogota, will add approximately 115 staffers and clients like Kimberly-Clark-owned Kleenex and Turner to the VML network. As far as leadership is concerned, Studiocom co-presidents Juan Fernando Santos and Chris Edmondson will join the VML executive leadership team with the former assuming the new role of chief experience officer and the latter taking on the executive director position for VML’s new Boston, Bogota and Atlanta offices as well as their respective clients.

Celebrities Tell Holiday Stories For Best Buy

best_buy_judy_13.jpg

It’s hard work making a price and item commercial interesting. But we think Crispin Porter + Bogusky may have done it with their Best Buy holiday campaigns which employs celebrities who read customized holiday stories. In all, there will be 11 spots featuring Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph, LL Cool J and Jason Schwartzman. The spots were directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon (The Switch, Blades of Glory, Cavemen) and three-time Academy Award-winning director of photography Bob Richardson (Django Unchained, Hugo, Kill Bill, Shutter Island, Casino, Platoon).

New York Times Ad Chief: Branded Content Units Coming Soon

The New York Times is planning to step off the sidelines and into the world of native advertising online, where a growing list of traditional publishers have thrown their arms around sponsored or branded content.

Meredith Kopit Levien, exec VP-advertising, said the Times is planning to introduce branded content units into its redesigned website, scheduled to rollout in the first quarter of 2014.

“As part of our redesign, there will be new ad products and at least one unit will be branded content,” she said.

Cats Can Sell Anything!

vileda_cat_video.jpg

As cat videos go, this one’s not interesting, not funny, not entertaining. In fact, it’s just plain boring. But 854,674 have watched it since October 21 which just goes to prove that, yes, cats can, in fact, sell anything. Or at least be used to sell anything. Or at least trick 854,674 people into watching a video. Anyway. In this case, these cats have been corralled to help sell Vileda house cleaning tools in Italy.

Nobbie Kim Returns, Lands ECD Gig at Rauxa

nobbie-kimIf the name Nobbie Kim doesn’t ring a bell, you might remember the creative from his days back in fall 2011 when he pledged to do at least one piece of iconic work at TBWA\Chiat\Day LA. Well, we’re not if that actually ever panned out, but he did get his fair share of attention in the ensuing days/weeks. Though he’s been off our radar for the past two years, Kim has resurfaced(minus any agency blood oath this time), accepting an executive creative director position at the Costa Mesa HQ of digital/direct agency, Rauxa. Kim will officially assume his post this Friday, Nov. 1 and report to Ian Baer, chief creative/strategy officer at Rauxa who’s based in its NY office. Along with his stint at Chiat LA, Kim has also served on the creative side at Innocean during his career.
