VC to VIdCon Attendees: Amazon Is the Biggest Threat to YouTube

As YouTube has grown since its 2005 launch, so too has the speculation over what company would emerge as its biggest rival. Hulu and Netflix are among the most often cited adversaries, but the serious opposition may come from a company whose core business has nothing to do with video: Amazon.

“The biggest threat to YouTube is Amazon,” said Mark Suster, partner at Los Angeles-based venture capital firm Upfront Ventures, during a keynote presentation Thursday morning at online video conference VidCon in Anaheim, Calif.

Mr. Suster said he’s discussed Amazon’s position to rival YouTube with top executives at the e-commerce giant. “I’ve had this discussion [with people] one level below the CEO [Jeff Bezos],” he said. “They get it, but they just have other priorities right now.”

Undercover Josh Duhamel Takes Diet Pepsi to Top of Viral Chart

Diet Pepsi’s latest celebrity campaign, with Josh Duhamel as an irresponsible grocery employee, earned the top spot in the world of viral video. In the ad, Mr. Duhamel is halfheartedly undercover as he operates the grocery check-out line; sometimes he poses with fans, and sometimes he shrugs as shoppers say, “you should be an actor!” His antics, which include throwing customers’ produce across the store and grocery cart-racing, racked up 2.3 million views with an effort from Weber Shandwick, with director P.R. Brown and Bau-Da Design.

It has become part of Pepsi’s trademark strategy to capture consumer attention through celebrity videos. Recent Diet Pepsi spots included Sofia Vergara and David Beckham. In a similar vein, PepsiMAX’s strategy is to take sports celebrities such as Jeff Gordon and Kyrie Irving deep undercover and shock the people they come across. In Mr. Irving’s spot “Uncle Drew” last year, Pepsi MAX dressed the NBA star to look like a tubby, 60-year-old geezer who then shocked 20-somethings in a neighborhood basketball court by out-performing them.

Vamos esperar.

Mercedes-Benz’s Official Service Song Is Weird, Cheesy, Suggestive and Embarrassing

The horribly cheesy corporate song is something of a tradition. The classic example is Bank of America's cover of U2's "One," with the lyrics updated to celebrate BofA's merger with MBNA. We've seen it in the agency world, too—for example, the Ogilvy Athens tribute in song to David Ogilvy, and SapientNitro's wretched "Idea Engineers" music video.

Here's a new mortifying entry: the Mercedes-Benz Service Song. It's sung from the point of view of a Mercedes car that's desperately craving a little TLC from a Mercedes repairman who knows how to use his hands. The lyrics begin: "I like them to be strong, that they can catch me when I skid/Like them to turn me on, I thought that some of them did/But just as I needed a helping hand, so many men were 'out of service,' not like you … You only give your best, won't stop until I smile." These prurient declarations, sung (by Patricia Meeden) like this is the '80s, are paired with the most clichéd, over-Photoshopped images they could apparently produce.

It may be the most downmarket thing this luxury brand has ever produced. I give it a week before it's gone from YouTube. Extended version after the jump. Via The Denver Egotist.

ANA Members Divided over Implications of Publicis Omnicom Merger

In the wake of the Publicis Omnicom merger announcement, clients are having mixed reactions. Some are brushing off concerns about newly-created conflicts with competitors, others are optimistic scale will have its benefits, and many are taking a wait-and-see approach. After all, it’s unclear yet whether the deal will definitely be approved, and assuming it is, it’ll take time before the fallout from the integration of the two companies becomes clear.

Suffice it to say, there will be far-reaching implications for marketers. Here’s what Bill Duggan, group EVP-Association of National Advertisers, has to say about the marketing industry trade group’s view on the biggest deal in adland history.

We’ve heard concerns from some members about competitive conflicts. Bringing Publicis and Omnicom together will bring competitors under the same holding company umbrella. In some cases fierce and direct competitors. In other cases, indirect competitors.

Dobras urbanas

Somos urbanos.

Everything You Need to Know About Motorola’s Moto X and Its Marketing

Motorola unveiled the heavily-anticipated Moto X Thursday, the company’s first smartphone developed since being acquired by Google last year. And unlike other smartphones on the market, the Moto X’s allure is mostly its looks rather than its technology.

Customers will be able to personalize their Moto X by choosing from 22 phone backs (four of which are actual wood), seven accent colors, a white or black face plate, a white or black wall charger and 16 or 32 gigabytes of memory. In addition, customers will be able to put a personalized 25-character message on the back of the phone. Four days later, the phone will be shipped directly to their homes.

The design-centric phone will be marketed more like a fashion accessory than a piece of technology, according to Motorola’s VP-global brand and product marketing Brian Wallace.

Leading the round is Insight Venture Partners, an investor in Twitter and Tumblr, and participating is Accel Partners, an early investor in Facebook. (The third participant is OMERS Ventures, the investment arm of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System. BBH Interns Have Cronuts to Share, but Only If You Donate to NYC’s Food Bank

Hey, you, person who will spend $20 per pastry to a pastry scalper to get your hands on the newest hottest pastry invention. Or you, person who cries because you couldn't get your hands on one, because other people ate them all, even though you were really looking forward to it. Do humanity a favor and spend your extra money and emotional energy on feeding the hungry. Hell, you might even get your grubby paws on a Cronut after all. (For the ignorant, that's a cross between a croissant and a donut, natch.) "The Cronut Project," spearheaded by some BBH New York interns, partnering with NYC Food Bank and Cronut inventor Dominique Ansel, features a daily raffle—with the donor who pledges the most money, plus another random donor, getting a free Cronut. It all ends tomorrow, after which you'll have to buy a plane ticket to South Korea so you can get a Dunkin Donuts knockoff. Photo via.
