Your Ads Are Lovely, But Please Make Me A Product That Sings

Agency staff are no longer content with making ads. And the lack of contentment does not stop there.

Agency staff are no longer content with making brand-sponsored content or content for the social stream. To fully activate the creative mindset and employ all the great tools available today, agency staff of the world must make products!

According to USA TODAY, Crispin, Porter + Bogusky introduced the Papa’s Pilar-branded line of superpremium rum. In February, Bartle Bogle Hegarty launched its piano-playing tutorial, Playground Sessions. Additionally, executives at MMB created a line of charity-focused, environmentally friendly kids’ clothes, backpacks and books.

Chris Vance, head of BBH’s innovation division, ZAG, says the thought was “Could we do a Rosetta Stone for musical instruments?” he says, comparing his product to the language-learning software. After they came up with the concept, they brought on others, including digital software firm Rain and composer Quincy Jones.

Deutsch LA is also committed to innovation and product development. Winston Binch, chief digital officer, thinks agencies are better poised than others to create products that consumers will actually use.

“I think marketers make really great inventors because we understand culture, we understand people.”

Jack Daniel’s Poised to Pour Millions Into Premium ‘Gentleman Jack’

Jack Daniel’s has been selling its “Gentleman Jack” whiskey variety since the late 1980s, positioning it as “silky and warm” with a smoothness that comes from being charcoal-filtered twice.

But for all of its life, the super-premium Tennessee whiskey has been overshadowed by regular black-labeled Jack, which has sucked up most of Brown-Forman’s media budget. That will begin to change this weekend, when the Gentleman makes his first TV appearance with an ad that will air Sunday night during the premiere of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” series on CNN.

From now through December, the marketer expects to spend at least $7.7 million on media for the campaign, called “The Order of the Gentlemen,” which will include print, out-of home and digital. Havas-owned Arnold Worldwide handled all the creative while Interpublic Group of Cos.’ UM is the media agency.

‘Tiger Effect’ Didn’t Dampen Golf’s Popularity With Viewers, Advertisers

Can you name the top three earning American athletes in Sports Illustrated’s 2012’s “Fortunate 50” list?

The NBA’s LeBron James and Kobe Bryant didn’t make it. Neither did the NFL’s Tom Brady or Major League Baseball’s Alex Rodriguez.

Instead, golfers Phil Mickelson ($60.8 million) and Tiger Woods ($56.4 million) ranked Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in annual endorsement dollars, winnings and appearance fees. Only boxer Floyd Mayweather ($85 million) ranked ahead because of his two pay-per-view fights. Almost all of the golf duo’s earnings came from ad deals. Mr. Mayweather didn’t have a single endorsement.
