Is (Fake) Twitter Pope the Next Justin Bieber?

Pound for pound, some of the stupidest commentary online and on TV as media prognosticators waited for the Pope to be revealed today was the notion that the next Pope needed to be on Twitter. Or what? Social media gurus were going to totally abandon the Catholic church in droves? Twitter addicts were going to stop donating all that money to the church?

At any rate, the next pope, Argentina’s Jorge Bergoglio, was already on Twitter!

Or so certain media people who decided to Google him discovered. This afternoon, a number of folks (including one journalist who should have known better) discovered the account of @JMBergoglio. And unlike the last Pope’s, this one was fairly active. It was also in Spanish, which some of us don’t read because we took French in high school.

The “De-Skilling” Of The Ad Industry Isn’t Just Happening In America

I tend to view the advertising industry through an American lens. But over at The Guardian’s Advertising hub blog, Shuan Varga, Chairman and Creative Director of Ingenuity, talks about some problems the UK ad industry is facing in light of budget cutbacks. His arguments sound awfully familiar, except he calls the dismissal of experienced ad execs a “de-skilling”:

From the agency point of view, this experience deficit makes the entire industry vulnerable. Agencies used to claim routinely to be “custodians of the Brand”. I wonder how many of them can plausibly say that any more. Nowadays, while you might still find an agency that’s worked on a brand for a decade or more, if the most senior person on the account team graduated six years ago and has worked on the account for two, that doesn’t sound much like genuine custodianship to me.

Like many folks on this side of the pond, Varga points to cost-cutting and industry consolidation as the major culprits in the “de-skilling.” Downward pricing pressure has affected all businesses, worldwide. Clients force the ad industry to cut costs. And when the ad industry has to cut costs, we apply that to our vendors (Photographers, printers, freelance creatives). And so on it goes. Is anyone (or anything) going to finally make this come to a halt?

Share Everything You Wanted to Do, but Never Did, on Instasham

Add it to the pile of amusing agency side projects: Instasham, an online collection of stock photos specially designed for posting to Instagram, showing all those things you wished you had done just so you could post them to Instagram. Didn't get to hang with Kanye? Instasham it. Didn't go to the Coliseum? Instasham it. Didn't sunbathe on a yacht in the Caribbean with beautiful bikini-clad women? You get the idea. Because Instagram is now well past the what-all-the-cool-kids-are-doing upswing, and well into the why-is-everyone-in-such-a-reflexive-narcissist stage, and oh, by the way, all of your photos already look the same as everyone else's, and it turns out the contents of your closet aren't really that fascinating after all. From Mother, New York, creative team Andy Dao and Stacey Smith. Site development by Joseph Valle. Made all the better by the website's "how to" instructions on using your smartphone to take a picture of the pictures on your computer screen.

Brill Tells DMA That FTC Is ‘Ramping Up Enforcement’

Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill is offering online advertisers and direct marketers both a carrot and a stick.

As a keynote speaker to the Direct Marketing Association’s “DMA in DC” conference, Ms. Brill said the FTC wants to work with the industry to find agreement on ways to protect the privacy of consumers and promote a “vibrant, innovative, online marketplace.”

But she also spoke of recent FTC prosecutions and said the agency is “ramping up enforcement” of those who break federal privacy laws, especially in the expanding new world of smartphones and mobile apps.

New Balance cria tênis customizável com impressão 3D

CBS Sells ‘Good Wife’ Reruns With Internet Viewers First in Line

CBS Corp. has sold rerun rights to “The Good Wife,” one of broadcast TV’s most popular programs, in a new arrangement giving Amazon’s web video customers first access to the show, CBS said today.

The first three seasons of “The Good Wife” will become available on Amazon Prime Instant Video starting tomorrow, according to CBS, which noted that Prime Instant videos run commercial-free. Hulu Plus, Hulu’s paid service, will get the shows starting in September. And then only next January will cable’s Hallmark channel begin airing the program.

Selling syndication rights is an essential part of broadcast TV networks’ business model, but serialized dramas such as “The Good Wife” don’t usually find as much demand as series such as sitcoms where watching in order is less important. Serialized shows may be perfectly suited for streaming services, however, because subscribers can control when they watch and consume many episodes in quick succession — the so-called binge viewing that Netflix has encouraged by making every episode of its original series “House of Cards” available at once.

Adopted Puppies Get MINIs To Drive Home In

Last year, MINI New Zealand won our hearts with “Driving Dogs,” a campaign it did along with the Auckland arm of the SPCA and DraftFCB that taught pooches how to drive in hopes it would draw attention to how smart and talented these dogs were — and lead to adoptions. Now, the agency wants to give other SPCA adoptees a chance to drive around too, so it gave newly adopted puppies a free “car” made out of cardboard that they could drive home in. Shaped like a MINI, the special carry box transforms into a dog bed where the puppies can live the first eight weeks of their lives.

Like all MINIs, new owners could customize the car with with an alphabetic sticker sheet to create a personalized license plate. It even came with an “owner’s manual.”

Arctic Monkeys preparam disco novo

O último disco dos Arctic Monkeys foi Suck It And See, de 2011.

Dá uma olhada no line-up do festival.

Para aumentar a expectativa a respeito do novo disco, relembre “R U Mine?”:
