FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski Leaving U.S. Agency

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski said he’s resigning, setting up a second vacancy on the five-member U.S. agency that regulates telephone, cable and broadcast companies. Mr. Genachowski, a Democrat in the post since 2009, announced his departure today at a meeting of agency workers in Washington.

“Over the past four years, we’ve focused the FCC on broadband, wired and wireless, working to drive economic growth and improve the lives of all Americans,” Mr. Genachowski said. To replace him, President Barack Obama could elevate either of the agency’s two Democrats or name a chairman from two new members who will need Senate confirmation.

Mr. Genachowski, 50, can depart without leaving behind a 2-2 partisan tie because Republican Robert McDowell just days ago announced that he’ll resign in coming weeks.

Never Wear A Speedo in A Hot Tub

mentos_hottub.png

Apart from the fact a Speedo just isn’t built to properly support or contain a real man, wearing one in a hottub full of bikini-clad babes and acting like your dad is, well, just not a good way to roll.

That scenario, along with two others, is the latest effort from Mentos and tells guys, “Don’t Become Your Dad.” So yea, don’t snap your Speedo and slap baby powder on yourself when leaving the huttub, don’t refuse a ride with two hot chicks and don’t ever be that idiot who exclaims in the middle of a quiet library, “how about a phone that just makes phone calls?”

Yea, Don’t become your Dad.

How Can True Agency Collaboration Be Achieved? Via a Financial Incentive Program

As advertisers continually require new media expertise, with both traditional and ever-growing digital channels to connect with consumers, many have increased the number of agencies to manage their communications. But they have also grown more concerned that the agencies don’t often work together harmoniously.

In short, collaboration didn’t used to matter as much.

Agencies started the idea of creating a holistic platform for advertisers by telling their clients that all their services could be handled by various units within the agency, or holding company, and they devised some nice labels to convey integration. “Under one roof” is a nice selling proposition, but it really doesn’t happen easily. Often, the groups are siloed and each responsible for its owned profit-and-loss statement, and media, PR, promotions, direct marketing and other disciplines don’t actually talk to each other. Many are set up as profit centers.

Reggie Watts Really Wants You to Stop Paying for Carbon Pollution

You're sitting down, doing your taxes, just trying not to hate the universe, when a pocket-picking smoke monster reaches into your jacket and steals all your cash. This is "The Price of Carbon," the latest clip from the Climate Reality Project, Al Gore's environmental advocacy group. Created with the help of D.C. communications shop Glover Park Group and Brooklyn production company m ss ng p eces, the clip uses charming—if a little arty—visuals to draw a line from oil and coal pollution to climate change to taxpayers' wallets via relief packages for the victims of natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy and last year's Midwest drought. The playful, minimalist aesthetic helps a fairly complex argument seem simple. The sing-song narration, delivered by comedian and musician Reggie Watts, also helps. So, you could do what the spot wants you to do and complain about the problem to your friends, or write a letter to Congress, or something. But if you take the crux of the video to heart—Earth is getting really pissed off at humans, the incredibly well-financed energy industry doesn't care, but c'mon, the government should try to make carbon barons pay for the damage anyway—then now might also be an appropriate time to throw on Watts's essential anthem, Fuck Shit Stack. Especially if you really are still doing your taxes.

Rogers Joins Up with Havas Discovery

We’ve received confirmation that Carl Rogers has assumed the role of executive creative director at what is now Havas Discovery, the digital/analytics/CRM arm of Havas Worldwide. Last we recall, Rogers parted ways with Grey New York, where he last served as VP/creative on the Pantene business, a year ago. Unlike what tipsters are saying, though, Rogers joining Havas Discovery was not the handiwork of the agency’s Chicago CCO, Jason Peterson, but rather Paul Marobella, president of Havas Discovery. From what we’re hearing, British native Rogers is working across offices ranging from Chicago to Baltimore.

During his career, the creative has also served as copywriter/CD at the likes of Critical Mass, StrawberryFrog and Dentsu Amsterdam.
