All Quiet on Campaign Trail as Sandy Strikes

A presidential campaign that’s been a blur of political attack ads and candidate travel driven by $2 billion in historic spending has been frozen in place by the fury of a storm no person or government could control.

Exactly one week before the Nov. 6 general election, with some polls showing the race a dead heat nationally, President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney have temporarily taken themselves off the campaign trail.

The candidates cancelled rallies and stump speeches, aiming to free up emergency workers and show voters they put public safety over politics, at least through Hurricane Sandy’s landfall and the worst of the storm’s impact.

1. O Iluminado – 184 calorias

2. Tubarão – 161 calorias

3. O Exorcista – 158 calorias

4. Alien – 152 calorias

5. Jogos Mortais – 133 calorias

6. O Pesadelo – 118 calorias

7. Atividade Paranormal – 11 calorias

8. O Massacre da Serra Elétrica – 107 calorias

9. A Bruxa de Blair – 105 calorias

10. [Rec] – 101 calorias

World Series Ratings Fall to New Low

Fewer baseball fans tuned in to see the San Francisco Giants sweep the Detroit Tigers in this year’s World Series than any other edition of the Major League Baseball fall classic, according to data from Nielsen and News Corp.’s Fox network, which broadcast the event.

An average of 12.7 million viewers tuned in to see the four-game sweep, including two games in which the Tigers failed to score a run. The previous record-holder for the least-watched World Series was the 2008 event, when an average of 13.6 million watched the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays in five games.

Fans may have been less than interested in a quick, decisive series in which the Giants handily dominated the Tigers. And viewers on the East Coast may have been distracted by preparations for Hurricane Sandy, which loomed large as the Giants won the fourth game Sunday.
