Coming Soon: Budweiser ‘Black Crown’?
Posted in: UncategorizedIs Anheuser-Busch InBev planning to follow up Bud Light Platinum with Budweiser “Black Crown?”
The brewer has asked for and received approval for a proposed label for the higher-alcohol Bud line extension, described as a “golden amber lager” that is “distinctively smooth and beechwood finished,” according to this application with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.
The brew is listed at 6% alcohol by volume, which would put it a full point above regular Budweiser’s 5% ABV, and match the alcohol content of Bud Light Platinum, which was launched in early 2012 and has found early success. AB-InBev declined to comment on the Black Crown application.
China’s State Car Makers Lack Incentive to Succeed on TheirOwn
Posted in: UncategorizedA former government minister got it right when he likened Chinese state-owned automakers’ joint ventures with foreign companies to “opium.”
Like the addictive drug that makes its users feel happy for a short time but undermines their health in the long run, joint ventures enable state-owned automakers to generate profits but have made them lazy and reluctant to invest in the resources to make their own brands successful.
The former minister used the opium analogy last month at an automotive forum to highlight the financial dependency of China’s state-owned automakers. Perhaps out of discretion, he did not add one unpleasant truth: The state-owned automakers’ addiction to this “opium” has become incurable.
Chinese Retailer Yihaodian Launches 1,000 ‘Stores’ Overnight
Posted in: UncategorizedChinese retailer Yihaodian takes its battle for customers to the real world, with a clever guerilla stunt by Ogilvy & Mather. The company “launched” 1,000 stores seemingly overnight, located in front of Chinese landmarks, and in some cases, in front of brick-and-mortar supermarkets.
The catch: They aren’t real. They exist only in the virtual world, and consumers can see, visit or shop at them using an app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wu-xian1hao-dian/id561927089?ls=1&mt=8) while they are physically present at the “location.”
“We want to create buzz and raise awareness of Yihaodian’s more convenient shopping offer. While traditional offline retailers are desperately trying to move their businesses online, we thought we’d do just the opposite … and give the game an interesting twist,” said Ogilvy Shanghai managing director Yuan Yong in a statement.

HSBC Reaches Out Beyond WPP After Eight-Year Relationship
Posted in: UncategorizedEight years ago, at the end of a long and much-watched process, one of the world’s biggest banks, HSBC, consolidated creative advertising, media and direct marketing with a single holding company: WPP.
Now, it’s looking elsewhere.
“HSBC has begun a review of its strategic advertising and media partners, which is expected to conclude at the end of the first quarter of 2013,” a spokesman for the bank told Ad Age in a statement. “This closed review, in which participation is by invitation only, is not a creative ‘beauty parade’ and HSBC is not conducting any such pitch review.”
The Ad Age Agency A-List: Here’s How to Enter

Ad Age is now accepting submissions for our annual Agency A-List that honors the best shops, regardless of discipline or specialty.
In past years, the top honors have gone to Wieden & Kennedy, McGarryBowen and CP&B. Do you think you have what it takes to join them in being named our Agency of the Year?
