Brand stretching: Sneaker da Volkswagen?

É importante a gente saber que existem potenciais para uma marca exercer sua magia em novos produtos (até então não explorados).

Buscar expandir o conceito de suas causas, campanhas e ações, em produtos e/ou serviços extraordinários, torna-se uma interessante alternativa de rentabilidade.

Neste sentido, existem duas opções: Brand extension (extensão de marca) e Brand stretching (expansão ou elasticidade de marca).

No caso do VW Polo 444, temos um exemplo de Brand stretching. Ou seja, é a marca apostando em um segmento totalmente paralelo ao seu “core business”.

A edição limitada do sneaker inspirado no novo VW Polo, lançado na Holanda, aumenta, sim, a notoriedade da marca, assim como também a rejuvenesce junto ao público de interesse, que são os jovens.

  • Brand extension refers to the use of a successful brand name to launch a new or modified product in a same broad market.
  • A successful brand helps a company enter new product categories more easily.
  • For example, Fairy (owned by Unilever) was extended from a washing up liquid brand to become a washing powder brand too.
  • The Lucozade brand has undergone a very successful brand extension from children’s health drink to an energy drink and sports drink.
  • Brand stretching.

  • Brand stretching refers to the use of an established brand name for products in unrelated markets.
  • For example the move by Yamaha (originally a Japanese manufacturer of motorbikes) into branded hi-fi equipment, pianos and sports equipment.
  • When done successfully, brand extension can have several advantages:
  • Distributors may perceive there is less risk with a new product if it carries a familiar brand name. If a new food product carries the Heinz brand, it is likely that customers will buy it
  • Customers will associate the quality of the established brand name with the new product. They will be more likely to trust the new product.
  • The new product will attract quicker customer awareness and willingness to trial or sample the product
  • Promotional launch costs (particularly advertising) are likely to be substantially lower.

Brand stretching é certamente menos caro do que construir uma nova marca a partir do zero. Se uma marca tem capital forte e uma massa estabelecida de clientes, a extensão corre menos risco de não ser bem sucedida. O problema surge quando as empresas “esticam” suas marcas de uma forma que não faz sentido. O que não é o caso do Volkswagen, na minha humilde opinião.

Em uma promoção conjunta, Visa e Walmart querem que você faça algo que nunca fez na internet: pedir desconto. Será um produto e uma rede social diferente por semana, incluindo Twitter, Facebook, MSN e Orkut.

Começando hoje com “Guitar Hero 5″ (incluindo a guitarra) para PlayStation 3. O preço normal é R$ 389, mas se tiverem 5 mil tweets com a tag #JuntosPeloDescontoVisa, o produto será vendido por R$ 189 no site do Walmart. Ou seja, 200 reais de desconto, válidos por 24 horas.

Na semana que vem será quadrilogia “X-Men” em Blu-ray e Facebook, depois DVD de “Up” e Messenger, e finalmente livro “Amanhecer” e Orkut.

O primeiro mês acontece em parceria com o Walmart, mas a Visa promete continuar a promoção com outras lojas no futuro, focando inclusive em eletrônicos.

Além do buzz nas redes sociais, a intenção é tangibilizar um dado que surgiu em pesquisas realizadas com clientes Visa. Entre as barreiras do e-commerce para compras de alto valor, foi apontada a falta de possibilidade de negociar.
