Craigslist Battling Image Nightmare

craigslist_1Secretly, did America realize that there was a seedy underbelly flowing just below the surface of craigslist? Certainly, in major metropolitan areas, some of the advertising was suspect, especially in the “Erotic Services” section. Plus, there were the third-page stories of good folk getting ripped off by advertisers. But there was no real cause for major safety concern. That’s changed in the last couple of weeks as the online classified service has fallen under both public and judicial scrutiny.

Is this a case of karma finally catching up to the site, or is craigslist simply having a bad couple of weeks?

Not including the “first” craigslist killer, Philip Markoff, craigslist has been rocked by scandal, and the list is as diverse as it is unsettling:

  • Korena Roberts is to be arraigned for murdering a woman, and possibly her baby, after meeting them on craigslist to sell baby clothes
  • A North Carolina man was charged with using craigslist to find someone to rape his wife at knifepoint
  • Eric Claiborne, of Georgia, was charged with “offering” a seventeen year old girl to engage in prostitution
  • Ester Amy Fischer, author of American Courtesan, writes a tell-all article about selling sex on craigslist in The Huffington Post
  • Wichita, KS, craigslist rapist, David Gage, was found dead in his cell prior to his trial
  • Granted, blame cannot be attributed to the online classified service for these occurrences. (There is no implicit danger in searching for baby clothes.) However, be assured that the company’s ethical standards are under scrutiny as both a corporate and community citizen. Following the negative press and public concern, it is quite possible that craigslist will no longer be the hip, “freeconomy” advertising site it is today. On the other hand, it may take more than a couple of harmful stories to topple the internet classified giant; according to Alexa.com, craigslist.org ranks 24th globally, and falls into 8th place in the United States, behind Google, Yahoo, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, MSN, and Windows Live.

Só que, apesar do sucesso, foi percebido que os consumidores queriam saber qual era o verdadeiro segredo por trás do mix entre o chocolate e o caramelo, principais ingredientes do Caramilk. Para revelar o segredo, a Saatchi & Saatchi de Nova Iorque criou uma campanha que engloba vários meios, principalmente televisão e stunt marketing. O segredo, no entanto, foi revelado: o que acontece é uma irreverente dança entre o chocolate e o caramelo. Simples, assim como tudo que a Cadbury costuma provocar em sua comunicação. No Canadá, foi realizado uma ação na rua, onde alguns dançarinos vestidos com os mesmos trajes dos comerciais, dançam e fazem performances inusitadas, fazendo com que as pessoas fiquem bastante curiosas em torno daquele acontecimento.     Números comprovam que o varejo vêm perdendo lucratividade nos últimos tempos, devido a instabilidade econômica mundial e a seqüencial queda no fluxo de clientes. Visando contornar essa difícil situação, algumas empresas, como é o caso da varejista líder mundial em produtos naturais, a Whole Foods, e a Sainsbury’s, contratam artistas de teatro para deixar o ambiente de suas lojas um local mais atrativo – um espaço também de entretenimento (leia matéria no INvertido).
    Até mesmo a Ikea não deixou de lado essa tendência e, buscando retomar os bons resultados de venda em sua loja em Wembley, Londres, convidou um famoso grupo de ópera para fazer apresentações “in loco” com o espetáculo chamado Flatpack. O grupo, formado por artistas do Mammoth Music Theater está fazendo algumas apresentações, em horários pré-marcados, durante o início deste mês de junho. Com essa estratégia a Ikea está conseguindo atrair um número maior de pessoas, graças ao enorme buzz que essa ação está causando nas regiões próximas da loja. Outros clientes, mais desavisados, entram na loja e são surpreendidos por uma boa música e uma inesperada performance “teatral”. Uma interessante saída para o varejo, não?!

    Você precisa enviar uma encomenda mas não sabe o tamanho da caixa que será necessária? A proposta do USPS (Serviço Postal dos Estados Unidos) é justamente responder essa pergunta através de um aplicativo que faz uso de realidade aumentada (o novo Second Life da propaganda, como já chamam por aí, comparação que eu discordo).

    Criada pela AKQA, a ferramenta permite que o usuário compare o tamanho do objeto que vai ser enviado com as caixas disponibilizadas pelo USPS em tempo real, capturando a encomenda com a webcam.

    Na prática, acredito que é mais fácil conferir o tamanho das embalagens no site, do que todo o trabalho de imprimir um código, ligar a camera e testar qual encaixa melhor. Porém, não deixa de ser uma idéia interessante de aplicação, e que pode evoluir para outros formatos.

    É por isso que eu discordo da corrente que diz que realidade aumentada é o novo Second Life da publicidade. É óbvio que o hype é maior do que deveria, que não é novo El Dorado publicitário, mas aplicações como a dos cards Topps Live provam a miríade de possibilidades interessantes.
