MSN anti-dumb effort is itself a little dumb

Msndumb MSN has a new ad campaign out which claims, “No one wants to look dumb.” To avoid saying stupid things at the watercooler, wearing ice-washed jeans on a first date, or being generally unaware of pop-culture minutiae, the ads urge you to visit MSN.com, which is some sort of repository of face-saving knowledge. As punishment for their ignorance, the characters in the ads end up getting serenaded by a hipster dude, whose guitar features the taped-on slogan, “This machine kills dumb”—a kind-of dumb reference to Woody Guthrie’s “This machine kills fascists.” The guitar dude also has his own Web site, where you can craft a little ditty for your stupidest friend or family member.

Google Analytics have released the beta of Benchmarking reports. See the full article here. You’ll need to Opt in to share your data anonymously though, which is a fair trade.

So now you can compare your travel site with the industry average. Sadly no way to compare via country, only “Category” but it’s nice to compare. The more sites that opt in the better the results will be. Give it a few months for all the major players to opt in before you start to use the benchmarking as gospel.

iLike, a social network for music fans, is scoring big today with the pre-release of R.E.M.’s new album.

The roll-out, the first of its kind for a major act, will allow fans to stream and share Accelerate in its entirety beginning March 24, a week ahead of the album’s April 1 release date.

“It was one of those ideas that was presented to us and it seemed like a good one so we ran for it,” R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe tells Billboard.com. He also noted that the way people embrace music “has certainly changed in the last 5 or 10 years. I think you can either go with it or sit back and watch it happen, and I would rather be out on the field than in the bleachers.”
