Max the Beetle puts the Hoff in his place

Volkswagen’s talk-show campaign, hosted by an actual VW, is a concept I’d like to see more often. Granted, we already have inanimate objects hosting talk shows (Leno), but if Craig Ferguson can get a show on late night, Max the 1964 Beetle deserves a chance, too. Hopefully a real show in this vein would have better guests than David Hasselhoff, but the house band appears to have stolen Lenny Kravitz’s old drummer, so they’re off to a decent start. This isn’€™t the kind of Hoff car commercial we were expecting, but it will have to do.

Fighting high gas prices with ad tattoos

Jamesburns
Golden Palace Lady, what hast thou wrought? James Burns (shown here) of St. Albans, W. Va., is taking a nod from the cash-strapped mom and auctioning off his head as ad space … to combat rising gas prices. If we didn’t know better, we’d say he hasn’t quite thought this idea through. In fact, he has an intricate plan. He says he will put the proceeds from his eBay auction into buying a more fuel-friendly vehicle than his Subaru. Which isn’t a terrible idea—it’s just an awfully roundabout way to do it, especially when the cost is branding himself with a corporate logo. Maybe he should stick with his original idea: a tattoo “making a statement against how high gas prices have gotten.”

Keep happy hour safe and fun for everyone

Chopstick Hapa Sushi in Boulder, Colo., has introduced a “Happy Hour Code of Responsibility” via local agency TDA. Three print ads illustrate the dangers of behaving badly. If you don’t dance responsibly, you risk a wardrobe malfunction. As for irresponsible flirts, well, they could end up red faced in more ways than one. (Ouch! Those slaps sting. That’s what I hear, anyway.) And, as seen here, a painful form of myopia can result from using chopsticks in a less than responsible manner. (See that full ad here.) Frankly, happy hour with a bunch of krumping horny cyclopses sounds pretty cool, so I’d avoid Hapa altogether, where they’ve got way too many rules and really know how to cut a guy’s buzz. Besides, who would trust the sushi in Boulder?

Boston battling subway sexual harrassment

T
“Rub against me and I’ll expose you.” Ah, if I had a dime for every time I’ve heard that in Boston’s subway system. Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officially unveils a campaign aimed at combating sexual harassment on the T. The ads use provocative headlines. Frankly, the way they herd us in like proverbial cattle most days, it’s pretty tough to avoid some degree of unwanted human contact. Usually it’s an elbow or briefcase in the face. Some guy once smacked me in the nose with his cellphone. If it had been an iPhone, I wouldn’t have minded. It was a Samsung. There’s one sure way I know to deal with sexual harassment on a packed Boston commuter train. If someone’s hands stray where they shouldn’t, just point at him or her and scream, “Yankee fan! Yankee fan!” They won’t give you any more trouble after that.
