Chase Reviewing Digital

As mentioned above, we’ve received confirmation that JPMorgan Chase is rethinking its digital partnerships. A spokesperson for the global financial services firm tells us, “We’re currently undergoing a review of our digital agencies, which we routinely do to ensure their capabilities best fit the needs of our evolving business.” On the digital front, Chase currently works with Austin-based agency T3, which proclaims itself to be the brand’s “go-to digital agency since 2006.”

From what we’re hearing on the Spy line, though we’ve yet to substantiate this, T3 held a meeting last week announcing that Chase would not be renewing its contract come year’s end. We’ve inquired about this and will update if and when we hear more. In addition, we’re following up with the Chase camp to see if T3 has been invited to participate in the review, and should hear back on this some time this afternoon. Stay tuned.

And Now, Another Rooster Original: ‘Water Cooler Talk’

When employees at Rooster aren’t skateboarding, it turns out that their hipster lifestyle dives into the banal. Sometimes, they just like to stand around the water cooler and talk. Judging by the latest clip of self-promotion, they talk about typical things, like Game of Thrones and podcasts. Co-founder Gavin McInness, however, is old and obsolete when it comes to water cooler talk. My advice: either watch Game of Thrones or don’t bring it up. And, this may be more important, take care of business before getting a prostate exam.

You’ll get the references if you watch the clip, which is basically an amateur attempt at awkward situational comedy. There are a few funny moments and a few moments when you can hear crickets. Not much more to say, other than podcap.

Liberty Mutual Launches Review

We’ve received confirmation that auto/home/life insurance brand Liberty Mutual is putting its creative and media accounts into review. Both have been handled since 2005 by Boston-based Hill Holliday, which sources say will defend. HH isn’t commenting on the matter, but we’ve been told that the Liberty Mutual creative and media reviews will be handled separately. Sources add that Liberty Mutual has recently brought on a new CMO and the brand is looking more closely at the metrics and ” moving the sales number,” hence its move.

Some of Hill Holliday’s notable work for the brand over the years includes the Webby-winning “Responsibility Project” and the more recent  “Humans” campaign (spot above), which kicked off during last summer’s Olympics. As has been reported, Hill Holliday, which recently welcomed a new CEO, is also still vying for the Cadillac creative biz (no update as of yet on this).

Here’s a Quick Update on Translation

We arrived this morning to a flood of tips regarding the state of Translation, mainly that the NYC-based agency cut several staffers last week. While many of those on the Spy line were spouting numbers including “38,” we heard directly a short while ago from Translation founder/CEO Steve Stoute, who clarifies that he had to actually let go of 17 people across departments last Friday.

From what the exec tells us, it had nothing to do with specific client issues (and yes, we are looking into the one many of you mentioned), but that “when you grow to where we grew, [there are staffers] who are not culturally fit, are overpaid or are not qualified.” Stoute adds, “I have to keep the talent at my company at the same level as the opportunities that come our way.” We’ll keep you posted if and when we hear more.

Here’s a Quick Status Update on Bernstein-Rein

Well, we’ve just had a chat with Steve Bernstein, co-namesake/president of Kansas City-based Bernstein-Rein and we’ve received some clarification on what we’ve been hearing about aplenty on the Spy line over the last 24 hours. We have been told that B-R is still the de facto agency for Commerce Bank (not the one that morphed into TD Bank, but this one), though the chain is undergoing a “strategic change” and thus, a relationship chance with its agency (one that’s lasted approximately 14 years). From what Bernstein says, there will be no cuts, no agency shifts as of now but a “relationship change” as a result of Commerce’s move.

Yes, it’s cryptic, but that’s what we know so far regarding Commerce and B-R, the latter of which counts a staff of approximately 220. Second up to bat, we were receiving tips that Bernstein-Rein hired a “consultant to restructure agency.” Not quite, according to Bernstein, who tells us that Tim Williams, a Utah-based consultant out of Ignition who has been brought on board process to “survey people on how to improve.” Draw your own conclusions, but we’ve been told adamantly that there will be no restructuring as a result of Williams’ consultation.

Finally, B-R has announced that it’s reunited with longtime client Hostess (well, since 2005), the maker of Twinkies and Ho-Ho’s among other products that went bankrupt not so long ago but has miraculously risen from the dead thanks to both Apollo Global Management and Metropolous & Co. We’re being told that B-R’s new work for the brand will launch mid-summer.

martin_sorrell_twitter.jpg

Following its recent preferred ad position deal with Starcom MediaVest in April, Twitter has signed a deal with WPP. The deal will enable WPP and it operating units — GroupM, Kantar, Wunderman and others — to access Twitter’s treasure trove of data and incorporate it into WPP media and analytics platforms.

Of the deal, WPP CEO Martin Sorrell said, “Twitter’s relevance continues to grow – not only as a social platform, but also as a window into consumer attitudes and behaviour in real time. We are delighted to announce this very wide-ranging strategic partnership and to ensure that Twitter data is a key ingredient in many of our disciplines. We look forward to leveraging the platform in a variety of ways for our clients around the world.”

The deal fuels Twitter move into the Big Data space and its deepening marriage with the marketing and advertising community.

Following ‘Heart Friend’ Clip, Zoosk Appoints C+K as AOR

Notice we said C+K, not C-K to clarify and reiterate. Anyhow, yes, six months after launching a rather peculiar, pre-Valentine’s Day spot (above) for Zoosk, San Francisco-based Camp + King has been officially named agency of record (minus review) for the online/mobile dating site. As the parties involved and YouTube stats can attest to, Havas-supported C+K’s spot for Zoosk has racked up over 14 million views since its launch. Regarding Zoosk’s decision to continue in its relationship with Camp+King,  the brand’s president/co-founder Alex Mehr says, “Zoosk is a young, energetic brand with big plans. We felt that the team at Camp+King mirrored these qualities and are as excited as we are about building our brand in the US and globally.”

This marks the first agency of record relationship for six-year-old Zoosk, which has been working on a project basis up until now. C+K, which also works with Old Navy and Capital One, will debut digital video for its newest client come July. Check out a more recent clip if you so choose after the jump.

MRM, Singer Part Ways

Well, there are more changes on the MRM front to be had according to those in the know. Less than a week after undergoing various leadership shifts, including Bill Kolb‘s promotion as well as an alignment and changing of the guard in its West Coast operations, we’ve received confirmation from sources familiar with the matter confirm that Mark Singer and MRM have parted ways. Singer (pictured), who originally joined MRM in December 2008 as SVP/account director on the U.S. Army account, eventually moved up the ladder to serve as EVP/general manager at the agency’s New York hub.

From what we’ve been told by our sources, MRM worldwide president Michael McLaren will absorb Singer’s responsibilities for the time being, but there will be an eventual replacement for the latter exec (no timetable set yet, though). Prior to McCann/MRM, Singer spent nearly two years as SVP/senior partner at Ogilvy on American Express. Update: Sources add that Singer left June 3 after a long transition period” to go back into management consulting as a partner at Deloitte, where he had a previous five-year run as senior manager.

Add List.ly To Your List of Content Curation Tools

Do you like to make lists? Twitter is full of them, and now List.ly takes list making to the next level.

Here’s a list I made last night. Feel free to add to it.

List.ly’s co-founder Nick Kellet says, “Listly brings badly needed structure to social content by combining two interesting trends on the web – crowdsourcing and interactive social polling.”

I can definitely see the value in lists, and in List.ly’s curation tools. Just in advertising alone, there’s room for lists of freelance art directors, copywriters and web devs grouped by market or by specialty; lists of clients from hell; lists of brands that get content marketing right.

And the list goes on…

The Takeaway from the 2nd Annual MRM Contest: ‘I Am…Purple’

I don’t get Vine. I don’t get the appeal of six seconds worth of jump cuts and amateur shaky cam, when our mobile photography capabilities are so advanced. But, if Vine has any redeeming qualities, it’s unusual format does open the door for creative contests. Well, maybe more curious than creative, since how much can you really say with poor quality videos in six seconds? Nonetheless, MRM Worldwide just held its 2nd annual “I am MRM” contest where agency employees under 28 could produce a meaningful Vine and win a trip to Cannes.

The finalists, including winner Anna Chechetka, did get quite creative, incorporating text, art, sound effects, and stop-motion. You can watch all of the finalists’ videos here. My personal favorite, complete with fire-breathing dragon, comes from Yi Xiu Lim. It turns out that Chechetka, meanwhile, learned she had won in a personal call from MRM CEO, Bill Kolb. Before getting on the phone, Kolb — who was recently promoted to chairman/CEO of McCann Worldgroup’s GM account — looked at his secretary and in a grumbly old-man voice said, “What is this silly Vine business?” That last part is probably not true; I just made it up to project my Vine feelings on to someone else.

Breakfast Makes A New, Beautiful Thing: ‘Points,’ the Sign of the Future

Take one trip to Penn Station and you will realize the importance of smart signage. Maybe it’s just the overpowering stale-Starbucks stench in that underground space that causes confusion, but surely, if it featured more well-placed arrows, we would feel less like salmon swimming desperately upstream.

Not only are they semi-non-existent, but it seems ridiculous that our signs are still stagnant. Thankfully, finally, Breakfast NY has come up with a solution. Points, “the most advanced sign on earth,” is digital and dynamic, changing direction and display depending on pre-programmed or social data. At an event like Coachella music festival, Points could indicate imminent shows. On a street corner in DUMBO, Brooklyn, Points would give tourists direction to Foursquare-recommended coffee, boutique shopping, and the soonest subway.

Here’s What Else is Going On with MRM

Yes, you may have already read/heard that MRM chief Bill Kolb has been promoted to chairman/CEO of parent McCann Worldgroup’s General Motors account. But alas, there are other things stirring as well within digital/direct-focused MRM, specifically in terms of certain West Coast operations. From what we’ve been told by sources familiar with the matter, MRM Salt Lake City and MRM San Francisco will be combined to create a new unit called MRM/West.

As a result, Lori Feld and Ted Tsandes will serve as managing director and executive creative director of MRM/West, respectively. From what we’ve been told by those on the Spy line, MRM SF managing director, Patricia Berns, and VP/project management Jim Ewing are no longer with the agency. MRM would not comment on either’s status, but we’ve received word that Jim Wayand, a Microsoft alum who was mentioned among those departed, still remains on board as SVP/global business lead. As for the new leadership team, Feld has spent 13 years within the McCann/MRM fold and Tsandes a decade in its creative department. Both have worked out of the SLC office.

Martin|Williams Picks Up P.F. Chang’s/Pei Wei

We’ve been hearing about this since late March, actually. But yes, though it took a while to clarify/confirm as we’ve been told that the ink took longer than usual to dry, Omnicom-owned, Minneapolis-based agency Martin|Williams has finally, officially been named agency of record for Scottsdale, AZ-based P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and its spinoff Pei Wei Asian Diner chain.

Regarding her company’s decision, P.F. Chang’s chief brand officer, Julie Elkinton, says,  “We interviewed a range of agencies across the United States and found that the team at Martin|Williams was the perfect combination of strategic thought and creative that we needed to capitalize on exciting opportunities for our two culinary brands. Their passion for our uniquely positioned restaurants was evident through the work they presented and we cannot wait to see it come to life over the next few months.”

We’re checking to see who else participated in the pitch, but in the meantime, we’ll tell you that Martin|Williams succeeds fellow Twin Cities operation, Olson, on the P.F./Pei Wei biz. Olson previously handled both advertising and PR for both brands, but as a result of the client’s decision, the duties have been split, with M|W taking on advertising and Karwoski & Courage taking over PR duties.

Update: Sources tell us that M|W beat out three other agencies in the P.F./Pei Wei pitch including Acquity Group and TM Advertising. The third agency has yet to be determined.

ADC Encourages 50/50 Gender Split in Creative Industry, Hosting Event to Emphasize

And rightfully so, we believe–well, at least as an outsider looking in. The headline basically sums it up, but let the Art Directors Club’s executive director, Ignacio Oreamuno, drop some science above about the need for gender equality in the ad industry, not just from an agency infrastructure standpoint, mind you, but award show juries, etc..  And yes, the ADC Gallery in NYC (see here for handy Yelp review/coordinates) is hosting an all-girl photo shoot at the event, which takes place at 12:30PM EST tomorrow and will include the likes of industry notables such as Cindy Gallop, Ale Lariu and more.

KK Los Angeles Gets Animated with ‘Mythical Creatures’

The Los Angeles outpost of agency/content studio KesselsKramer, which opened up shop in Chinatown last year, is part of the creative team behind “Mythical Creatures,” a new documentary about artist Gary Baseman uncovering the story of how his parents survived the Holocaust in Ukraine. The film’s mixture of art and history also benefits from a score by South African duo, Die Antwoord.

The press release characterizes the project as “a whimsical story of survival and hope.” Using whimsical to describe a Holocaust story can be cringe-inducing, but after watching Baseman discuss his familial roots in his art studio, the description seems to make sense. Baseman’s artistic style has been described as “adorably perverse” by the Los Angeles Times, and that sort of imaginative approach to a story about Holocaust survivors could help the movie stand out creatively.

David Charles, ECD/partner at KK Los Angeles who wrote and directed the film tells us that his shop hopes to release the film in October, and to secure more funding. And not to worry, KK LA plan to start a second wave of Kickstarter donations later in a couple of days (we’ll update with link).

Credits after the jump.

Is Product Development the Holy Grail of Agency Survival?

fork_egg_beater.jpg

For the past several years or so, it’s become fashionable for advertising agencies to dedicate a portion of their time to product development. Some do it for clients. Others do it all on their own. The poster child in this space is Nike FuelBand, a fitness product co-created with the brand’s advertising agency RG/A. It was, and is, a runaway success.

Other agencies have dabbled with product creation. Crispin Porter + Bogusky developed a line of premium rum, Papa’s Pilar. Deutsch LA, which has a program dedicated to entrepreneurial pursuits, created a floral delivery service, Bouqs, and an independent film entitled Between Us. Boston-based MMB launched a line of environmentally friendly children’s clothing that donated proceeds to animal shelter charities. And Anomaly worked with outside consultant The Kind Group to create a line of skin-care products, Eos, currently being sold at Target.

All well and good – but why would an agency dedicate resources usually reserved for serving client business to product development?

So, Is This the New Shop Formed by Ex-Syrup Leads?

It looks like it’s still in its nascent phase, but multiple sources are telling us that Saints New York is the new shop that’s been formed by Syrup founder/executive creative director Jakob Daschek and its former CEO/managing director,  Omino Gardezi. If you recall, the pair essentially served as the leadership team at the LBi-owned Syrup, but parted ways (or vice versa) shortly after Publicis Groupe acquired LBi last fall. Thus far, it appears that a fair amount of the work featured on the Saints site harks back to Daschek and Gardezi’s Syrup/LBi, but as mentioned, the Saints operation is a newly formed one. We’re checking in with at least one of the two involved, so we’ll let you know and get some clarification on staff count/current client roster if and when we can. Check out the Saints’ MO below:

You Wanted It (OK, Maybe Not Really), But You Got It: Your Season 2 ‘The Pitch’ Info

Nine months after reaffirming its “commitment to awfulness” as our own Bob Marshall so eloquently stated, AMC has finally revealed details of the upcoming second season of its ad agency reality slugfest (well, if only), The Pitch. The brands participating in season two — which will consist of eight, hour-long installments and kicks off Thursday, August 15, at 10pm — include 1-800-Flowers, Bliss, College Hunks Hauling Junk, Fuller Brush Company, Gibson Guitar Corporation, Little Caesars, Square Trade and Tommy Bahama.

Perhaps you’re familiar with several of the names mentioned above, as are we, but we’re not sure if any of the actual agencies vying for their work in The Pitch part deux ring a bell. But maybe that’s just us. Here’s your list: Daniel Burton Dean (Nashville, TN), Fletcher Rowley (Nashville, TN), Powell Creative (Nashville, TN), breensmith Advertising (Atlanta, GA), Innerspin (Los Angeles, CA), MC2 (Los Angeles, CA), COR (Santa Monica, CA), Neuron Syndicate (Santa Monica, CA), Central Coast (Chicago, IL), Commonground (Chicago, IL), The Monogram Group (Chicago, IL), Bee-line Communications (Chicago, IL), Mischievous Studios (Hollywood, CA), Heavenspot (Glendale, CA), OneX (Culver City, CA) and Pasadena Advertising (Pasadena, CA).

Maybe season two is a little less high-profile than its predecessor, but at least we’ll have more of Bob’s epic day-after recaps to look forward to once again.

Halls Unceremoniously Dumps JWT for Younger, Prettier Agency Partner

JWT was thrown under a bus this week by Halls, which Mondelez International (formerly known as Kraft Foods) counts as one of its “power brands,” thanks to a 24.7% share in the medicated confectionery category globally.

According to Ad Age, Mondelez shifted its global Halls creative business to Wieden & Kennedy, abruptly ending its four decade-long relationship with JWT.

For reference, here’s a Halls’ TV spot from JWT’s reel:

“A pep talk in every drop,” is a good line. It may even be a great line. But we all know it takes more than a great line to sustain a client’s interest, trust and business, day-to-day, much less decade-to-decade.

Ad Age also notes that earlier this year, W&K was handed Trident’s U.S. business just 18 months after Saatchi & Saatchi had won it. W&K also has the marketer’s Stride gum brand. Halls, Trident and Stride are similar, reasons Ad Age, because they are typically sold at the front of stores and rely on impulse purchases.

One thing is for sure, W&K isn’t shy about going after packaged goods brands these days. Given how shoddy much of the work in the CPG category has been over the years, I’d say this is a positive development, creatively speaking.
