Marketers, Agencies, Google Spar Over Brands’ Precious Data


The unhappy scrum over marketers’ precious data took center stage at ad agencies’ annual convention on Tuesday, as a quartet of brand, agency and tech company execs debated whether that information should be available to outside business partners.

Marketers don’t appear to trust others with their data and haven’t yet found much reason to feel otherwise.

“The data that I have is more valuable to the equation than ever,” said Robert Tas, who until late last month ran digital marketing at JPMorgan Chase, during the session at the 4A’s Conference in Los Angeles. But agencies don’t seem as interested in that data as they are in, for example, their own business.

Kristen Cavallo Ascends to President at Mullen’s Boston Office


Kristen Cavallo, chief strategy officer at Mullen Boston, has been promoted to president at the office, a post that’s been empty since Alex Leikikh was named CEO at the Interpublic Group of Cos. shop last December.

Ms. Cavallo expands the group of top female executives at major Boston agencies, including Hill Holliday CEO Karen Kaplan, Arnold Global President Pam Hamlin and Barbara Goose, president for Boston and Detroit at DigitasLBi. That’s an anomaly in an industry that frequently laments the lack of women in top positions.

Ms. Cavallo said she plans to focus in part on talent within the agency. “We have to prioritize growth, but also really just remind the people that work here that they are our best case studies,” she said. “We ask a lot of people. My job is to be their fuel.”

We Hear: Cavallo Promoted to Prez at Mullen?

KC1Nearly three years after officially joining Mullen as chief strategy officer, Kristen Cavallo is moving up the ranks according to those in the know on the Spy line. Word on the street is that Cavallo, who works out of Mullen’s Boston HQ, has been promoted to president of the agency (in her second stint).  As CSO at Mullen, has led planning, biz dev and analytics efforts for a range of clients including JetBlue, Google, Acura, Adidas and Zappos.

Prior to Mullen, Cavallo spent well over a decade at the Martin Agency, last serving as SVP/planning and development at said agency, where she led efforts for clients including Pizza Hut, Expedia, Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola and Miller. During her career, Cavallo has also worked on the planning side at the likes of Arnold Worldwide.
