Facebook’s Most Heartwarming Ad Reminds Us, ‘We Are Not Alone’
Posted in: Uncategorized
When we praised Facebook's new ad campaign the other day for being "down to earth," little did we know the best spot in the series would be anything but.
The social network's newest ad, "We Are Not Alone," is possibly its best ever. We see cosplayers preparing their over-the-top outfits for an upcoming gathering, then watch as they exit the baffled "real world" and arrive to bond with their fellow fans.
It's an ad for Facebook Groups, to be sure, but it's also a warm-hearted vignette that resists the popular urge to mock cosplayers as socially awkward ubergeeks. Just goes to show that sometimes the key to making an ad with mass appeal is to do justice by the right niche.

Caddy CMO Subbed In Electric Car to Make Ad ‘More Socially Palatable’
Posted in: UncategorizedGENEVA — Cadillac’s “Poolside” commercial, featuring a middle-aged rich guy bragging about America’s work-hard ethos, has generated mixed sentiments — for Cadillac’s own marketing chief.
Uwe Ellinghaus says he’s not surprised by the strong response to the spot, which first aired during last month’s Winter Olympics and again during the Oscars broadcast on Sunday. Critics say it celebrates a workaholic, materialistic culture; supporters call it a nod to American capitalism.
Mr. Ellinghaus, who took over as Cadillac’s global chief marketing officer in January — after the commercial already was in the works — said early research suggested “we would break through the clutter and generate a hell of a lot of buzz. Mission accomplished.”

Ignited Promotes New Bravo Series with Social Campaign
Posted in: UncategorizedIgnited has a new social campaign promoting Bravo’s new series, Online Dating Rituals of the American Male, which premieres March 9th.
The new campaign is tied to a promoted post on Buzzfeed examining “The 10 Types of Guys You Find On Every Dating Website.” At the end of the post, readers are invited to take a short quiz to discover which of “six species of men that exist in the dating wild” they are or is their type. After completing the survey, @BravoDating will tweet one of six video results: Catchitis Perfecta (“Mr. Perfect”), Clinger Onis (“The Clinger”), Doublis Bookeris (“The Player”), Love Seekitis ( “The Romantic”), Liaris Apperancean (“The Liar”), and Predatorus Obnoxious (“The Predator”). As you can imagine (this is Bravo we’re talking about), these are pretty silly. The narrator treats the subjects like he’s narrating a nature documentary (thus the latin species names); it’s easy to imagine David Attenborough providing the narration. You can check out “Liaris Apperancean” above, and stay tuned for “Doublis Bookeris” and “Predatorus Obnoxious,” along with credits, after the jump. continued…

‘Wake Up and Smell the Bacon’ With Free Alarm Gadget From Oscar Mayer
Posted in: Uncategorized
In case you haven't experienced the surreal delight of being guided from slumber by the smoky allure of "the nostril's north star," then Oscar Mayer might have the alarm clock for you.
The brand's "Wake Up and Smell the Bacon" promotion will give out 4,700 bacon-scented smartphone attachments over the next month. Winners can use the gadget with a branded alarm app that wakes you with the aroma of sizzling bacon.
Oscar Mayer and agency 360i deserve bonus points for the self-indulgent and rather hilarious video below announcing the giveaway. "When imagination blossoms," the Scandinavian narrator intones, "only this scent will guide you to your greatest awakening."
Giving out 4,700 devices might sound generous, but it's a crafty long-term play for profitability. If you're going to wake up daily to the smell of bacon, you're going to make damn sure you always have bacon in the house.

We Hear: Burbary Out at LCE?
Posted in: UncategorizedThere’s no official word as of yet, but a phone call or two tells us that Ken Burbary is no longer at Lowe Campbell Ewald, where he’s spent the last two years working out of the agency’s Detroit-area office as chief digital officer. The CDO gig was not Burbary’s first rodeo at what was then Campbell Ewald, where he originally spent nearly a decade in the late 90′s onwards and eventually served as SVP/chief technology officer. In between his two stints at LCE, Burbary served as VP/group director on the strategy/analytics side at Digitas. We’ll keep you posted when we find out more.

With Hackers Not Exactly Scarce in Russia and Ukraine, Battle Moves Online
Posted in: UncategorizedCyberspace is fast becoming a battlefield for Ukrainian and Russian partisans even as ground troops from the two countries continue their military standoff.
Hackers have launched attacks on the websites of state agencies and publications on both sides. A Russian government watchdog has ordered a shutdown of the social-network pages of Ukrainian nationalist groups. And a Ukrainian phone company said its network in parts of the Crimean peninsula was damaged as unidentified men took over communication centers.
While there has been a cyber component in many recent armed conflicts, it’s likely to be particularly intense in Ukraine because of the level of programming skills in both countries. Absent a crisis, Ukrainian and Russian Web wizards often deploy their skills against companies and consumers, aiming to profit from stolen bank data and corporate secrets.
Lively Illustrations of Tiny Men Coloring Animals
