Leno’s Last ‘Tonight Show’ Draws 15 Million Viewers, Most in 15 Years

Jay Leno’s farewell telecast on “The Tonight Show” drew 14.6 million viewers, his biggest audience in more than 15 years.

It was the most viewers for the show since May 14, 1998, when Jerry Seinfeld appeared after his own show’s finale, NBC said today in an e-mailed statement.

Mr. Leno, 63, bows out as the most-watched late-night host, a crown he’s held for much of his 22 years in the job previously held by Johnny Carson. His job is being taken over by Jimmy Fallon, who moves into the spot on Feb. 17 and is relocating “The Tonight Show” to New York from Los Angeles.

Bear From Chobani’s Super Bowl Ad Is Now Ambushing People in NYC

Marketers are officially obsessed with trying to frighten the world-weary populace of New York City. Following the recent devil baby and zombie stunts, here's footage of the Chobani bear—an animatronic version of the real bear in the Super Bowl commercial—ambushing people in Manhattan, knocking over a hot dog stand and generally hamming it up. These videos are pretty funny, but I'd like to see New Yorkers fight instead of just whipping out their phones to take a picture.

Nail Unveils New ’15,000? Spot for Lifespan

Providence-based Nail has unveiled a new spot for Lifespan entitled “15,000.”

That number refers to the approximate count of employees at Lifespan, who, according to the 60 second spot, “have the best job in the world…delivering health with care.” The spot begins by attempting to make viewers consider everyday life in a different light, as a narrator intones things like “Every day, joy and heartbreak wash across us with equally unpredictable force” while a violin plays a melancholy melody in the background. About the time when you’re wondering what exactly this is an ad for, the “best job in the world” line comes in, followed by shots of Lifespan workers with name tags and ending with the “delivering health with care” tagline.  “15,000″ will begin airing tonight during the opening of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, and marks the beginning of Nail’s first branding campaign.

The Most Interesting Man in the World Crashes the Olympics

The Most Interesting Man in the World is going to the Olympics. Well, sort of.

Dos Equis is launching a new ad during tonight’s opening ceremonies called “Bobsled” that was specifically created to run during the games. But while the ad includes scenes of Olympic sports like hockey and skiing, the word “Olympics” is not used, and the athletes are actors.

What Would an ‘Honest’ Facebook Movie Look Like?

If you’re a Facebook user, by now you’ve probably received your very own movie.

In honor of its tenth year, Facebook has given us all the gift of a little one-minute movie looking at our own time on the social-networking site. They range from emotional to funny to vapid to sort of misleading.

While mine did hit a couple of actual high points — my engagement, publication of my first novel — it also featured a photo of former Ad Age Editor Jonah Bloom with a Colonel Sanders lookalike, another of four 40-ounce bottles of St. Ides (beware the ides of March) and something from one of last month’s snow storms. Completely overlooked: my continuing stream of angry posts during Saints games; barbecue-related travels in Texas (as well as brisket experimentation in my own backyard); Instagram photos of food; the great Velveeta shortage; and the approximately six million photos of my dogs.

BBDO Releases New Olympics Visa Spot, ‘Night Swim’

BBDO has just released a new Olympics spot for Visa featuring U.S. Olympic Freeskier Torin Yater-Wallace.

The 45 second spot, “Nightswim,” follows Torin on one of his night runs through “an ocean of snow,” where “it’s only [him] and the mountain.” Torin explains that he skis at night because the days just aren’t long enough, and he can engage his passion in private at night, without the pressures and distractions he faces during the day. The spot closes with Morgan Freeman‘s narration that Visa has been “supporting Olympic athletes for over 25 years.”

Like a lot of the Olympic advertising we’ve been seeing, “Nightswim” is pretty straightforward, allowing the athlete involved and the idea of Olympic sponsorship to speak for itself. The most unusual thing about the spot would have to be the nighttime setting, which allows for some interesting visuals, but also some moments where it’s kind of hard to tell what’s going on. Credits after the jump.

CU to Take on BYU in AdFight Smackdown

This past September, Brigham Young University challenged the University of Texas to an “AdFight.” When the University of Texas backed out, Brigham Young University challenged Colorado University, and now CU is letting BYU know that it’s totally on with the above video and accompanying website, which the Denver Egotist reports “students of the senior Portfolio Ad Class at CU — taught by Barrett Brynestad and Austin O’Connor” launched yesterday.

The AdFight will take place over a three day period, from briefing to presentation, although many details still need to be worked out. Date and time are still to be determined, but the schools hope to get “get a hypothetical brief from an agency, and be judged by a panel of CDs and other industry professionals.” We’ll be interested to see how this one plays out. Let the AdFight smackdown begin.

‘Gay Mountain’: Channel 4 Celebrates Gay Olympians with Dancing ‘Bear’

Fred Bear and Bearlesque, the U.K.’s premier boylesque troupe, get weird for broadcaster Channel 4, with “Gay Mountain,” a song-and-dance sequence complete with a light-bulb rainbow. The campy performance celebrates the gays who will be skiing and luging in Sochi during this year’s Winter Olympics.

Channel 4, which has broadcast rights for the Winter Paralympics, broadcast a “Dispatches” investigation earlier this week on gangs in Russia that target gay men and women.

Created out of the broadcaster’s in-house agency 4Creative, the film is just the latest in advertisers’ and agencies’ creative efforts to protest against Russian anti-gay laws. Google this week posted a rainbow-colored logo, for example, above anti-discrimination lines from the Olympic Charter. For Christmas last year, agency Mother in the U.K. sent a set of Russian nesting dolls modeled after famous Gay British icons to the Kremlin and the Russian Embassy in London.
