East of Eden

81k

I haven’t seen that many exciting exhibitions in London over the past few weeks. I was however, bowled over by the photos of Philip-Lorca diCorcia at the David Zwirner Gallery. The East of Eden series brings side by side biblical references and the dark side of the American dream continue

‘I Don’t Trust Microsoft Now,’ Says Former Microsoft Security Adviser

If a tech person told you he only uses open-source software and hasn’t carried a cell phone in two years because of privacy concerns, would you think he was a tinfoil-hat-wearing paranoid? What if that person was Caspar Bowden, the chief privacy adviser in the Worldwide Technology Office at Microsoft from 2002 until 2011?

Bowden spoke yesterday at Monday’s all-day Congress on Privacy & Surveillance held at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, and The Guardian was there. The British paper, which has been at the heart of the ongoing reporting on the National Security Agency’s Prism program and other surveillance activities, reveals Bowden’s switch to open-source software and non-use of a mobile phone, and, most notably, quotes him as saying, “I didn’t know about Prism when I was at Microsoft and I don’t trust Microsoft now.”

Prism has clearly left him disillusioned. Read The Guardian’s reports — the first a live blog of the conference, the second a post focusing specifically on the former Microsoft executive — for more details, but for now I’ll leave you with this key quote from the Bowden:

Track Me Out at the Ballgame: MLB Testing In-Park Sensors

Baseball fans may actually learn something about the game the next time they peer down at their phones at the stadium. This off-season, Major League Baseball will test a feature of its At The Ballpark app that allows mobile devices to communicate with sensors placed throughout ballparks. Triggered by the sensors, the app will welcome fans when they enter the vicinity, surface historical tales, and potentially enhance sponsor messages and displays with ad content.

The location-based system, which employs Bluetooth Low Energy technology, was on display last week for a select few visiting Citi Field in Flushing, Queens, home to the New York Mets. The Mets will be the first MLB club to incorporate the sensors, called beacons, into their home stadium in 2014. A handful of additional teams are expected to get on deck to use the system during the next regular season. No other pilot teams have been named at this stage.

“Clubs today are already raising their hands,” said Adam Ritter, senior VP-wireless at MLB Advanced Media.

What Going Private Means for Marketing at Dell

Since its inception in 1984, Dell has been building a database rich with customer information. The company claims it has more customer data than most others because it sells direct to its small business clients. After decades as a public company, Dell is about to go private, giving it an opportunity to devise a longer-term strategy and experiment away from investor scrutiny.

Allison Dew, VP of Marketing at Dell, spoke with Ad Age last week about how becoming a non-public company might affect marketing plans and its popular @DellCares social outreach program.

AdAge: Dell is going private. How does that affect your role and the company’s marketing strategy?

MySpace’s Music-Centered Relaunch Turned Up Volume, But Is Anybody Listening?

Logged onto Myspace lately?

Ask your friends that question and there’s a decent chance they’ll respond with a guffaw. Today is the age of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Vine but one of the internet’s biggest boom-and-bust stories refuses to fade into a memory of all that is wrong with ad-supported social media.

Since you probably haven’t visited in recent times, I can tell you: Myspace these days actually looks pretty darn good. Under another name, the social music site that ad network Specific Media restaged in June might be garnering praise for its slick design and ability to weave in elements borrowed from Pandora, Spotify, Vevo and music-news site Pitchfork.

Sherwin Williams Uses Google Glass to Turn the Real World Into Paint Colors

With Sherwin Williams’s new Google Glass app, consumers can turn everyday items into paint colors with nothing more than a wink or a voice command.

“In focus groups, a lot of people said they pick colors by what inspires them while on vacation or what they see when they’re out and about. They want to replicate it but they don’t know how,” Sherwin Williams’s VP-marketing communications Ellen Moreau said.

The app, called ColorSnap Glass, solves this problem by combining Glass’s built-in camera with Sherwin Williams’s color recognition technology. Google Glass — or simply Glass — is a mobile computing device worn like a pair of glasses, with a screen placed in front of the user’s right eye.

Basketball Is Everything: The Real Return of Derrick Rose

Hours after Derrick Rose tore his ACL, way back in April of 2012, the Nike designer who created the shoe of LeBron James tweeted out this:

Pooh is the nickname given to Rose by his grandmother. @sevenzro1 is the Twitter handle of Jason Petrie, a dummy. The insensitive remark viraled its way around the Internet and added another layer of brand machismo to the Nike v. Adidas debate.

Coca-Cola Greenwashes Concrete City Square in W+K’s ‘Roll Out The Happiness’

Coca-Cola takes greenwashing to a literal level with “Roll Out The Happiness,” the latest global installment by W+K for the brand’s “Where Will Happiness Strike Next” campaign.

In the spot, Coca-Cola and W+K roll out a lush green carpet of grass sod onto a city square and invite people to remove their shoes, grab a soda and “experience a little unexpected happiness.” Not stopping at the grass, they also transplant trees, loaded with fun stuff for people to enjoy. People are pictured reclining on the grass sipping a Coke, kicking a ball around, and just relaxing and having a good time. They all seem to be having so much fun, it’s as if whatever job, class, or event they were rushing to doesn’t exist anymore. Or they’re paid actors.

At the end of the spot, the camera pans out and Coca-Cola’s makeshift urban green area is revealed to be in the shape of — you guessed it — a Coke bottle. So relax, smile, and take a sip from a soft drink that can also be used to clean clogged drains (Try it, it works!). Credits after the jump.  continued…
