MRM Loses a Pair of Execs

Sources familiar with the matter confirm that a couple of execs from have parted or are parting ways with MRM. We’ve been told that Adam Donnelley, who’s spent seven years at said agency and most recently served as EVP/director of strategy out of the New York and Princeton offices, has already resigned and is heading back to Australia. Donnelley (pictured) was originally part of the McCann Worldgroup Australia board and headed up MRM’s Sydney operations before returning to the U.S. four years ago to serve as EVP/worldwide account director on GM at the latter agency.

Meanwhile, sources also confirm that fellow seven-year MRM vet Dave Hohman will be leaving the agency at week’s end. Hohman, who also worked out of New York, held the title of EVP/global performance director and led the agency’s data & analytics practice. During his career, the exec held similar positions at the likes of Wunderman/Y&R Brands. No word yet on if MRM has immediate plans to replace either exec.

Street Waxing: Advertisement or PSA?

As much as I appreciate a good fail video and laugh regularly from schadenfreude, Lowe Roche’s latest for Fuzz Wax Bar in Toronto just made me cringe. To advertise their dedication to smoother skin, Fuzz covered a male model in wax strips and sent him onto the streets. People could tear the strips (and hair) off him to receive a 25% off gift certificate. The strips were illustrated with grim-faced smileys, varying based on the amount of pain they would cause. Many people appeared to delight in making this man shout in agony.

“Street Waxing” seems to me the opposite of an attractive ad campaign. The selling point of waxing is the final product: smooth skin. In between appointments, one primary goal is to forget about the pain. That makes this experience more of an anti-waxing PSA. Fuzz Wax Bar reminds us, very viscerally, that waxing is not a pleasant experience. And adding insult to injury, (unlike this model), you’re going to have to pay to get yours yanked off.

Um stop motion russo com cães reais

Criar um vídeo em stop motion já é por si só um grande desafio técnico e de paciência. A agência russa mfive foi além e criou este belo stop motion com dois simpáticos cães.
<trocadilho infame> Um trampo do cão! </trocadilho infame>

Dica do meu amigo e mestre do stop motion, Fabio Yamaji 🙂

Campbell Ewald Has New CEO, Rebrands

Well, we guess this is notable enough to merit a separate non-Stir post. So yeah, as you may have read this morning, there’s a changing of the guard at IPG-owned Detroit stalwart Campbell Ewald, which has not only welcomed a new CEO, but has joined the global Lowe network. As a result, the new entity will now be known as, yes, Lowe Campbell Ewald and will be led by Jim Palmer, who has been with CE for over 20 years and most recently served as its vice chairman/chief client officer.

As you can gather, Palmer (pictured) is taking over for 31-year Campbell Ewald vet Bill Ludwig, who we’ve been hearing for weeks was no longer with the agency, which was repeatedly telling us otherwise. Along with Palmer assuming the top post, CE president Kathleen Donald will take on the role of chief operating officer and add more management responsibilities. Regarding Ludwig’s departure, IPG chairman/CEO Michael Roth says in a statement, “Bill Ludwig is leaving the agency poised for growth. We wish him well and thank him for his many contributions to the agency over a 31-year career, including putting in place a new generation of management that understands contemporary integrated marketing and the digital landscape.” According to the CE camp, Ludwig could still work in some capacity with IPG.

What Happens When Ads Are Stripped of Their Logos?

Is it possible for ads to be so arresting and beautiful that they mimic art?

That was the theme of Le Communique Art Show, an exhibit that displays ads — stripped of their logos — as pieces capable of moving people, not just product.

The exhibit, developed by Leo Burnett creative director Nuno Ferreira and associate creative director Ryan Wolin, was the winner of The 4A’s TruthBrief Competition, which asked creatives to improve advertising’s image in order to attract more talent to the industry. The stunt caught attendees by surprise as it was displayed as an “art show” on a college campus in May. Each ad was stripped of markers identifying it as as such, and the audiences weren’t told the origins of the pieces.

You’re Equal In The Eyes of the Lord, Airlines Are Another Unholy Story

Money talks, but in airports and on board airplanes money screams. If you’re a first class passenger, for instance, you get to jump the line. It’s the way of the world. We respect influence, and influence can be purchased for a pretty penny.

NPR produced a segment today on travelers stranded in Newark and unable to get a flight to San Francisco, due to the crash of Asiana Flight 214 from South Korea.

The report highlights the inequity of the bumping system employed by airlines at a time of severe delays.

It turns out there is a method to this madness: It’s called customer relationship management — or CRM — and airlines helped invent it.

Each passenger’s rights on each flight are determined by a complicated calculus. It includes how frequently they fly and how much they paid for the ticket in their hand.

Are you offended in the least by these practices? Airlines, hotels and other businesses with rewards programs rank your importance by how much money you spend. If you’re a business traveler who flies weekly on full price tickets, you’re king of the jetway, simple as that.

firstclass

Let’s examine the issue from a different angle. How does it make United Airlines look when it bumps reserved passengers from a flight in order to put aforementioned kings of the jetway in their seats on their totally overbooked planes? There’s no democracy or good will between men here, that’s for sure. Rather, it’s an unwelcome reminder of our class system, and a ding on the brand that passes out favors in a way that makes others feel small.
