Twitter Pitches Brands with $100K Minimum Spend for TV Ad Targeting


Twitter last month revealed a TV ad targeting product, the first fruit of its February acquisition of Bluefin Labs, and the company has set a $100,000 minimum for marketers interested in taking it for a spin.

According to two people who’ve seen Twitter’s sales deck, national TV advertisers who want to be part of the beta must allocate a minimum of $100,000 per Twitter handle to promoted tweets tied to a TV ad campaign. And at least $50,000 of that must be specifically for promoted tweets placed using the new TV ad targeting product.

Relying on Bluefin’s video fingerprinting technology that tracks when TV commercials air and what ads ran against them, the new Twitter ad targeting product that debuted last month is intended to complement a substantial national TV buy. It lets marketers show promoted tweets to people who’ve been tweeting about a show in which their TV ad has also appeared to reinforce that messaging.

China to Shut One-Third of Infant Formula Producers Amid Product Safety Fears


China’s government plans to force up to a third of the country’s infant formula producers out of business as it tries to address the crisis of confidence in product quality and safety, local media reported.

China’s 127 licensed baby formula producers will be scrutinized over the next three months and regulators will allow no new entries after Thursday, when the government introduces detailed rules on ensuring safe production, Caijing business magazine reported, citing Wang Liming, minister of industry and information technology.

About 25% to 35% of companies will be ordered closed, the China Daily newspaper said, citing Zhuang Pei, an official with the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information. “They are not necessarily unqualified but the country needs more powerful alliances,” Mr. Zhuang said.

AXE: Protest

There was a faint scent of protest when we aired a radio spot for AXE that was a little ambiguous – was it a women playing tennis energetically (a la Maria Sharapova), or was it a woman doing something else? So we decided to create our own protest (against our own product!). We sent a group of attractive women protesters onto the city streets proclaiming “Protect Us From The AXE Effect”. Of course a group of attractive women waving banners and signs on the streets of downtown Nairobi was bound to attract attention. And so it did – from the public, TV news teams, radio stations, magazines and bloggers. The net result was that we gained a lot of mass media exposure explaining the AXE effect, at minimal cost to the client. Mission accomplished!

Johnny Two Shoes, W+K Concoct Chewing-Controlled Game for Stride Gum

In a cute take on motion controlled games, Stride Gum invites you to enter the world of Gumulon, where you’re represented by a “rebellious miner” named Ace. Ace, a strange green helmet-wearing thing, can only control the “intergalactic action” and ultimately vanquish the prehistoric cave beast if you concentrate on chewing while staring at your iPhone. When your jaw finally collapses after the strain of coercing Ace around the mine, the monster will eat Ace/you after seasoning you and taking a photo for posterity.

Watching the gameplay video makes this activity look like the dweebiest way to spend your day. I hope I never see someone sweating as they chew emphatically on the subway. This game should be played at home, if at all. Thankfully, Gumulon also comes in a touch version, should your mandibles tire of mining.

I will, however, give Stride’s effort points for novelty and its do-good nature. If we collectively achieve better breath through gamification, I can’t complain.
