This is how a society destroys itself.

“Everyone knows that gathering so much information is bullshit,” said Reinhard Weisshuhn, a German political activist and foreign policy adviser. “It’s a total breach of trust by the government. This is how a society destroys itself.”

“In our case, we thought we were being paranoid until we saw what they’d gathered and realized we’d been naive,” Weisshuhn said. “Here, it’s not the whistle-blower who is wrong, it’s the gathering of information.”

Weisshuhn’s perspective on the Snowden scandal rings true throughout Germany, where many believe that Snowden isn’t the bad guy. They can see the bitter irony – that the guy who called out Americans spying on Americans is being charged under the Espionage act.

The NSA leaks provided by Edward Snowden have caused outrage in Germany where crowds gave Obama a warm welcome with posters reading #YesWeScan, and Your privacy ends here. Memories of the Stasi past colour the German’s view of PRISM, America’s covert, totalizing and Orwellian U.S surveillance program revealed by Snowden.

Wolfgang Schmidt was seated in Berlin’s 1,200-foot-high TV tower, one of the few remaining landmarks left from the former East Germany. Peering out over the city that lived in fear when the communist party ruled it, he pondered the magnitude of domestic spying in the United States under the Obama administration. A smile spread across his face.

“You know, for us, this would have been a dream come true,” he said, recalling the days when he was a lieutenant colonel in the defunct communist country’s secret police, the Stasi.

…but even Schmidt, 73, who headed one of the more infamous departments in the infamous Stasi, called himself appalled. The dark side to gathering such a broad, seemingly untargeted, amount of information is obvious, he said. “It is the height of naivete to think that once collected this information won’t be used,” he said. “This is the nature of secret government organizations. The only way to protect the people’s privacy is not to allow the government to collect their information in the first place.”

Germany’s center-left newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung took Obama to task over the surveillance issue. “Governments do not have the right to conceal broad lines of policy,” the newspaper wrote. “President Obama is operating according to an odd maxim: ‘I am doing a lot of the same things that George W. Bush did, but you can trust me because I am the one doing it.’ Not even Obama is deserving of that much trust.”

Daí que a Del Campo Saatchi & Saatchi, da Argentina, teve a ótima sacada de comparar mulheres a furacões nos novos filmes da cerveja Andes, mostrando o rastro de destruição deixado por elas após o fim de um relacionamento.

Os filmes relatam as histórias de vítimas dos furacões Laura e Martha, que conseguiram levar praticamente tudo que eles tinham, menos os amigos – que elas até poderiam ter levado se quisessem, mas não. E para os amigos que ficam, sempre há aqueles com uma Andes gelada, prontos para consolá-los.

A grande ironia é que, olhando para trás nas propagandas da Andes, os homens estão sempre tentando encontrar formas de passar a perna na mulherada – aqui, aqui e aqui alguns exemplos disso. Daí, quando tomam um pé na bunda ficam aí, vítimas dos furacões…

Caso você esteja se perguntando – e B9 também é cultura, apesar desta explicação ser extremamente resumida – existem pelo menos seis listas com 21 nomes de furacões, que alternam nomes femininos e masculinos. Ou seja, a cada seis anos, os nomes começam a se repetir. A exceção são os mais devastadores, como por exemplo o Katrina, em 2005, e o Sandy, no ano passado, que geralmente são retirados da lista porque ninguém quer relembrar a destruição causada por eles.

E, sim, a maioria dos 77 nomes retirados da lista são femininos, mas só porque até 1978 todos os furacões recebiam apenas nomes de mulheres. E sim, o nome Hilda foi retirado em 1964.

Campanhas para a adoção de animais costumam ser emocionantes, especialmente para quem adora bichos. O filme recente da No-Kill Los Angeles(NKLA), estrelado por Kristin Bauer, não é diferente. Nele, a Pam de True Blood dá um depoimento tocante sobre como encontrou seu cachorro, Asher, nas ruas de Los Angeles há alguns anos e como ele se tornou parte importante de sua vida desde então.

“Ele e eu tivemos uma conexão, e eu não pude encarar a possibilidade de não viver com ele e tê-lo como meu amigo. E eu acredito que os abrigos estão cheios de caras como estes”.

Em preto e branco, o filme criado pela TBWA/CHIAT/DAY é perfeito. Apesar de ser uma atriz famosa dando o seu depoimento, a verdadeira estrela do filme é Asher, que com seus grandes olhos consegue dizer tudo que há para ser dito. Com com uma direção de fotografia impecável, o comercial é todo em preto e branco, o que chama a atenção para a gravidade da situação.

Por trás do comercial, um objetivo da Best Friends Animal Society: até 2017 transformar Los Angeles na cidade com o menor número de sacrifícios de animais de rua nos Estados Unidos. E apesar de ter sido criado no ano passado, o grupo facilitou mais de 23 mil adoções. Ter bicho é tudo de bom, mas não adianta apenas ter e largar. É preciso cuidar.
