An agency site with a serious potty mouth

Gringo_2
It’s tough to keep up with all of these new agency Web sites. Some are differentiating with tech tricks, others with a content-heavy approach, and at least one with some Martian-like characters. Now there’s Brazilian shop Gringo, which is going for shock value. I’m not sure exactly what it’s trying to accomplish. Visit the site and you’ll see what I mean. It features videos of people cursing in several languages, with helpful English subtitles. Some of the language might even make George Parker blush. Not just the F word, but the C word also makes an appearance. There’s the de rigeur user-generated element with a way to submit your own webcam obscenities. Gringo urges: “Make it naughty or amoral. Or both!” I have doubts about whether a prospective client will dig on this, since leaning on expletives is a lame way of coming across as edgy. Yet I doubt Gringo even wants to impress clients. My guess is it’s targeting others in the industry. I know, it’s shocking: agencies creating stuff for each other, not for clients or, heaven forbid, consumers. Via Advertising Lab.

Al-Mahabba Awards: Love at war

The story of Khaled Ibn Alwalid’s famous moment of love to the Prophet (pbuh) in the battle of Al-Yarmouk when he lost his helmet. He always had few strands hidden in the helmet.

The Value of a Long Wide Antenna

I'm not a very smart guy. But luckily (for myself and for my clients) I am a voracious reader, insanely curious and have made a lifelong commitment to always make time to learn. In short, I believe that by casting a Long Wide Antenna (LWA) I am able to seem smart and occasionally be smart — or at least clever.

Camouflaged beer really sneaks up on you

Camouflagecan “If a day’s activity calls for a fishing rod or a hunting rifle, a beer cooler may be nearby, too.” This is according to Brandweek, which explains that Miller and Anheuser-Busch are offering camouflage cans and related promotions. Mixing firearms and alcohol: what could go wrong? Last year, Miller came out with limited-edition “blaze orange” cans, so the drunken hunters at least had a chance of hitting them. The “camo cans,” rolling out in October, will blend in perfectly with the scenery. How will the soused sportsmen spot them in the brush? Check out the three generations of happy hunters on this book cover—it sure looks like Billy and Grandpa have had a few. And I wouldn’t want to wind up on the pointy end of Ted Nugent’s crossbow after the Motor City Madman has tossed back a few cold ones. Here’s Ted in his heyday performing “Catch Scratch Fever.” It’s more about wild life than wildlife, if you catch my drift.

A pregnant pause over at Baskin-Robbins

Bumpday_3
It’s tough to know what to make of Baskin-Robbins’ soft-serve promotion planned for this Wednesday that promises to turn “hump day” into “bump day.” From Brandweek: “Pregnant women will be treated to a free 3-oz. cup or cone at 1,000 select stores.” Wags might suggest that since the women are pregnant, hump day has already passed. But that kind of sophomoric humor wouldn’t fly here on AdFreak. If I were B-R, I’d keep some extra soft serve and mix-ins on hand. A full queue of frozen-dessert craving pregnant women will not be denied! And you just know one will go into labor and name the kid “Baskin” or “Robin.” Or claim to, in exchange in for a lifetime supply of free ice cream.

General Election Ad Spending Will Be Turned Up to 11

Right now, the volume of general election ads hardly registers. However, if you have ever turned on your car after you had previously been driving with the radio volume turned all the way up then you know what to expect — a startling blast. With the primaries going on for so long, it would appear that when the general election ad wars start it may have a similar effect.

Nuns also enjoy an incredibly close shave

We shudder to think what happened off-camera to the nun in this Venus razor ad from BBDO New York. Showing her ankles was bad enough, but she’ll be strung up by them once the Mother Superior finds out she shaved her legs. We’re pretty sure nuns in convents aren’t allowed to do that. Or much else, really. Of course, we’ve been wrong about nuns before.

Domestic abuse that’s painful all around

Aware1 Despite their best intentions, there’s an Evil Dead-like comedy/horror quality about these extremely literal ads from Saatchi Singapore, raising awareness of verbal domestic abuse. Old Spice spokesman Bruce Campbell would fit right in. See two more ads from the series after the jump. Via Advertolog.

Videogames like these will rent themselves

WongDoody’s new spots for GameFly show videogame characters using the game-rental service. The spot above shows a paratrooper, mid-drop, placing a GameFly order. What if he forgets to pull the cord? Luckily, he doesn’t—and he arrives home safely to find the game waiting for him. The mix of styles is fun, but where’s the reference to the seminal Pong and Blip environments? Sure, that paratrooper’s reflexes are quick enough to work a laptop at 1,200 feet—but the kids in this 1977 commercial could kick his ass at Blip. What a wuss. Someone should make a commercial fusing the various scenarios of BlueFly’s spots through the years. Just don’t invite the kids to play.
