Google’s Non-Ad Revenue Growth Outpaces Ad Biz As Prices Decline

Google, the dominant player in search, online display and mobile advertising, is finding a trickle of revenue elsewhere.

Long criticized as a one-trick pony, Google is learning some new tricks that don’t include search or selling ads to Madison Avenue. Advertising used to regularly account for more than 96% of Google’s total sales, but that has been slipping over the last year and in the latest period its down to 91% or $12.5 billion of Google’s $13.8 billion revenue, which was up 19% year-over-year. That doesn’t include its struggling Motorola Mobility mobile phone business.

Google’s non-ads business — which includes the company’s cut from movie rentals or app purchases through Google Play and the sale of hardware like Chromebooks and streaming media dongle Chromecast — grew its revenue by 85% to $1.2 billion. By comparison, advertising grew 15%.

Hulu Names 21st Century Fox’s Hopkins as CEO, Says Andy Forssell Will Leave

Nine months after Hulu’s founding CEO Jason Kilar said he was leaving the streaming video service, the company has found a permanent successor in 21st Century Fox executive Mike Hopkins.

The announcement, which came Thursday afternoon, comes a week after news broke that the company was close to hiring Mr. Hopkins, a deal maker charged with securing arrangements with TV carriers as well as on-demand and digital services. He had been Fox Networks Group’s president of distribution.

“After an extensive search, Mike was simply the best candidate for the job,” said Anne Sweeney, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group. Disney co-owns Hulu with Fox and Comcast (which gave up voting rights at Hulu in order to get government approval to buy original co-owner NBC Universal). “He has a strong understanding of programming, digital distribution and consumer behavior, and a great vision for Hulu’s next chapter,”

San Fran Brewery Crafts Marketing Around Story, Word-Of-Mouth and Watermelon Hats

Nico Freccia, the cofounder and head of business operations at San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery, sometimes wears a watermelon hat.

That’s apparently the sort of thing it takes, along with a tasty brew in an eye-catching can, for Hell or High Watermelon beer to stand out against behemoths like Budweiser and Coors.

Mr. Freccia talked about beer brewing and marketing at Ad Age’s CMO Strategy Summit this week in San Francisco. He ran down the highlights:
