Sneaker Wars Roundup: Nike says “my better is better” & Pony is back

In today’s environment, with technological advances, marketing strategies and celebrity endorsements, shoes have become much more than just footwear. Brands are scrambling to assert their top-dog status, and today finds Nike is in the midst of launching one of their broadest multimedia campaigns to date, including a :60 spot to air on American Idol and college basketball tournaments asserting that “my better is better than your better”:

The emerging Nike campaign is in direct response to the Under Armour Superbowl spot proclaiming “The Future is Ours,” announcing their entrance into the cross-trainer marketplace. Under Armour quickly rose to dominance in the “compression fitting apparel” category, and after entering the market less than a year ago, has taken a 1/5 market share of football cleats. An interesting article in today’s Oregonian has some interesting info and quotes regarding the Nike campaign and the shoe/athletic apparel battle:

“This was definitely an all-out attempt to stop Under Armour in its tracks,” said John Horan, publisher of trade newsletter Sporting Goods Intelligence. “They want to make sure they don’t get surprised on this category.”

Follow the jump for the Under Armour spot, a bit of Adidas, and some Pony action

When You Make A Living From Your Site, Fans Are Also Customers

I attended a SXSWi panel with a dubious title yesterday, “Online Adulation: Use Don’t Abuse Your Fans.” Look at those verbs. “Use.” “Abuse.” Not good.

There was one true blogebrity on the panel and sadly she conveyed, perhaps unintentionally, what a hassle it is to be so popular. I don’t doubt for a second that it is a hassle, for blogebrities don’t have people around them to deflect the constant stream of requests on their time and attention like an actor or rock star might.

Yet, because blogs are the centerpiece of social media today, we expect bloggers to be social. Thankfully, the moderator of this panel, Tom Merritt of c|net, provided a nice counterbalance to the blogebrity.

Merritt said he responds to critical emails, which often makes for better fans. He also said, “Good audience relations is good customer service.”

Of course, Merritt is representing a business, not just himself, so he has the additional responsibility of speaking for the c|net brand. But I get the sense that he’d go the extra mile, even if he wasn’t.

March Madness: good time for a vasectomy!

Balls
We at AdFreak don’t doubt for a second that there are sports fans crazy enough to plan major life decisions around college basketball tournaments. And neither does the Oregon Urology Institute, which recently aired radio ads urging men to schedule their vasectomies just before March Madness—thus giving them a legitimate excuse to skip work and sit around watching TV for days on end. Not only does such a plan ensure that men take the full recovery time (which not all do), it also reassures guys who might feel a loss of virility that they are still manly, masculine, men’s men who like sports and beef jerky and pointless conjecture from the broadcast booth. The sports radio station airing these ads is pitching in, too, promising each patient “a recovery kit of sports magazines, free pizza delivery and a bag of frozen peas,” the latter to treat swelling and pain in the affected region. It’s such a well-intentioned gesture that I’m not going to end this post with the “balls” joke I had planned. I leave it as an exercise to the reader.
