Wednesday Odds and Ends: The Rumormill Edition

yarn.jpg

Here’s a sample of the tips we’ve received today (OK maybe one or two are from yesterday) that didn’t provide enough info to follow-up on (OK or maybe we thought they were better in their uncooked form). Enjoy.

&#151 “financial based layoffs at a hot NY shop yesterday?”

&#151 “schematic new york cant hold on to its ECDs. the 2nd one in one year just left.”

(Ed’s note: Schematic did not return our phone call by the time this story was published)

&#151 Jill Holmstrom joins Karsh\Hagan as an Account Supervisor. K\H isn’t CP+B, if you recall.

&#151 “Grey just laid off four creatives. At least. Some of them quite senior and talented.”

(Ed’s note: Grey did not respond to our e-mail by the time this story was published.)

&#151 “BBDO is all hands on deck defending Pepsi. Chiat Day is doing ‘projects’ for the long time client. David Lubars is supposedly universally disliked by the Pepsi folks and that’s a big part of the problem. Look for Omnicom to offer a network solution and see BBDO have a diminished role in the future.”

(Ed’s note: BBDO responded “no comment”)

&#151 “Mendelsohn Zien purchased Spacedog to lay off the digital team and bring in new talent….smoke and mirrors from a [sic] ECD who has NO CLUE how the digital space works…..Stay away, stay far away!”

(Ed’s note: We admit to being confused about this one. MZ has yet to get back to us, and SpaceDog’s info all connects to MZ, so that part seems to be true.)

Can It, For The Win (FTW)

Ed Cotton of Butler Shine + Stern sees some changes on the horizon.

This one grabbed my attention:

Rise of the grow your own movement- with $50,000 of annual food production available in the average American lot, people will start growing their own vegetables and foods. People will also start doing things like canning and making more of their own food- less prepared foods and eating out.

Sounds like the best use of suburban lawns I’ve ever heard.

Indie Film Channels Work Together to Court Brands

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — At this time last year, IFC and Sundance Channel, the two leading cable networks for independent film, were still slugging it out for the same branded-entertainment dollars from advertisers that couldn't air 30-second commercials on either network. Now, they're both under the same rainbow, following the completion of Cablevision's May acquisition of Sundance. The network joins the Rainbow Media network family that includes AMC, WE TV and IFC.

50 Tiny Things – Mini Burgers and Soccer Robots, All More Fun than a Mini Dow Jones (CLUSTER)

Cactus Kid Commercial Kicked Out

Coca Cola may have thought they had another great commercial on the air but apparently they overlooked some areas of irresponsibility and dietary issues. Apparently, the script which featured a kid covered with Cactus running away with her pregnant girlfriend.

While the intent was to promote Oasis, a coke product being built, it was the whole concept of trying to promote teenagers to runaway. The pregnant girl may be of legal age, but the thing is that it is sending mixed signals to the masses.

The two commercials featured a character called The Cactus Kid, who was green, covered in spikes and did not like water.

His pregnant girlfriend was shown having a row with her mother before the couple sped away in a car in the style of an American road movie.

Boutique Call: Zig

Zig.png

Name/Location: Zig, Chicago and Toronto

Motto (mantra):
“ideas in their most powerful form”

Founded: 1999 in Toronto

About:
“Quickly earned a reputation as one of the leading communications companies in Canada. This led to the opening of its first United States office in 2006, when it acquired edgy Chicago boutique Hadrian’s Wall. The agency has since continued to grow both offices, and includes a powerful digital group and growing media platform. It’s also full of creative talent that regularly brings home awards from Cannes, The One Show, the Clio Awards, Art Directors Club, Communication Arts….blahblahblah you get the idea.”

Clients: IKEA, Molson, Best Buy, Virgin Mobile, Pfizer, Toshiba, Elysian Hotels & Resorts, Unilever, Scotts, New York Fries, Mr. Sub, ethel’s chocolate lounge, Lithia Motors and more.

Something fun:
“In the spirit of being able to heckle our colleagues, we often place bets pitting our countries against each other. Most recently, the Chicago office placed a friendly wager for the Olympics as to which country would take home more medals. To be fair, we offered a 90-medal spread. The winner was to receive something intrinsically of the losing country &#151 so IF Toronto had won, we would have sent them apple pie, or a Ford pickup, or maybe Bon Jovi. Thankfully the US eked out the win, but we are still waiting for OUR booty (ed’s note: boutique???), and we’re callin’ them out! We want some maple syrup! But we’d settle for some politeness and good manners.”

Aegis Buying Clownfish Is Like Mariah Carey Marrying Nick Cannon

nickmariah.jpg

Aegis wants you to know that they care about the green, man. The media company has bought UK/US shop Clownfish. Founded in 2002, Clownfish helps brands figure out how sustainability can improve business performance; matches brands with appropriate NGOs and performs general green ideation. It’s a strong brand headed up by the very sharp CEO Diana Verde Nieto.

Nice play for Aegis, but naturally, the company has decided to merge Clownfish into Isobar
Aegis’ global digital marketing firm. Isobar is like a shark. It just swallows other agencies whole like in December 2004 when it ate up search marketing firm iProspect. Or when, in 2005 it chomped down on web build agency de-construct, creative agency Farfar, ecommerce specialist Molecular, UK creative agency Glue and the list goes on and on.

Hmm…those were all digital shops. Clownfish does the whole environment, bottom line thing. You know, this reminds me of when I found out that Mariah Carey got married to pseudo-pop star Nick Cannon. I knew right then that these two people had gone way off the reservation, lost their marbles. Reading about this merger is kind of like that. You just know it’s a bad idea.
