There is so much to love about our client Integrity Spirits. First, it’s a Portland distillery that makes small batch, hand-crafted spirits. Second, it’s run by two passionate and talented young guys who happen to be best friends. Third, there’s the taste-testing.

ABC Says No To Gore’s Ad

ABC was the top-rated network last night during the presidential debate, making it the #1 network for both presidential debates and the VP debate according to our brother blog, TVNewser.

Awesome, except that one the other end, ABC may be losing some viewers due to their decision to refuse to wrong Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection’s Repower America during the debates. In fact, a digital campaign asking for folks to sign up in an attempt to peer-pressure the network to run the spot. As of right now, 130,069 people have signed on.

This just looks so bad for ABC. They aired a Chevron ad during the presidential debates, why not a green one?

ATTN: STEVE GRASSE SEEKS TO JOIN MATTHEW BARNEY AND DAMIEN HIRST AMONG THE RANKS OF THE WORLD’S FOREMOST CONCEPTUAL ARTISTS

To the uneducated viewer, Bikini Bandits might appear to be nothing more than eye-candy. However, the creator of the series, has much loftier ideas.

In fact, Gyro Worldwide CEO, Steve Grasse, sees Bikini Bandits as a post-feminist attack on the way women are portrayed in modern culture, especially by advertising.

According to the artist’s statement on The Arcadia Project (which he describes as “a sequence of five projects that together form a phenomenology of attentional economics and American pop culture at the beginning of the 21st century):

Advertising usually presents women as passive objects who are acted upon. And the consumption that advertising promotes–though it may be dressed up as an act of rebellion–is equally passive. Before the retail environment swallowed the natural world, satisfaction was wrested by violent force from the land. Today satisfaction is not longer a visceral atavistic exchange but a hollow, symbolic one, obtained by calmly waiting in line and exchanging symbols of credit for symbols of desire.

With the Bikini Bandits, I restored the old sense of blood-and-guts dominion to the act of consumption and the feminine form.

It’s copy like that leaves me dumbfounded. I don’t know whether to stand up and cheer, or roll around on the floor in a fit of laughter.

Advertising Industry To Financial Industry: We Don’t Want Your Stinkin’ War

va-we-dont-want.jpg

AIG was recently taken to task by the White House, Congress and Barack Obama for hosting a $440,000 conference that included expensive spa treatments for executives just days after the $85 billion federal bailout. Guess what? They’re going to hold another event and guess who’s paying it for it? You, me and your mama.

According to Bloomberg, the second event is to be held at Ritz-Carlton in California and is to help ‘motivate and educate’ about 150 independent agents the insurance.

AIG considered launching an ad campaign to explain its position. Thank god George Sard three PR consultant told them in an email message that it was “a really bad idea.”

You think M&C Saatchi New York, AIG’s agency of record, would want any piece of this? You guys are getting too twisted for advertising to mess around with. Who do you think we are – the tobacco industry? Note to the banking sector: You’ve been very very bad and no, we don’t want your war. Sorry. You’re riding solo on this one.
