We Hear: T-Mobile National Account No Longer With TracyLocke Dallas

We received your tips; it seems that a portion of the T-Mobile account is no longer with TracyLocke Dallas.

We hear that the agency first encountered rumblings about T-Mobile shopping around several months ago and broke the account into two separate portions: retail and national. In the ensuing pitch, TracyLocke retained the retail portion of the account but lost the national portion to an as-yet-unknown competitor.

We know very little in the way of specifics, but the news supposedly became official within the agency this week. In case you missed it, TracyLocke CEO Beth Ann Kaminkow also left for a position with Westfield Group earlier this month.

For context, Publicis Seattle has been creative AOR for T-Mobile since 2006.

Details as they come in.

We Hear: Executive Producer Out at Innocean USA

While Innocean officially declines to comment on staffing changes, we’ve received a steady stream of tips this week regarding Executive Producer Jamil Bardowell.

Seems that Bardowell, who joined Innocean as VP, Director of Integrated Production in 2012, is no longer with the agency.

Bardowell has an extensive agency background: before joining Innocean, he worked at WPP’s The Garage Team Mazda; previous roles include production duties at Deutsch, Saatchi & Saatchi and The Rumor Mill.

His name appears on campaigns as recent as this week’s Hyundai FIFA spot; we’ll let you know if we learn more.

Layoffs at W+K Portland

We’ve confirmed, via agency spokesperson, that a series of layoffs officially hit the Portland offices of Wieden+Kennedy today.

In summary: after parting ways with a few unspecified clients, W+K had to make some unfortunate decisions regarding the size of its staff.

Agency reps could not comment on totals or titles, but several anonymous tipsters told us the number of layoffs was greater than 30 and that it included more than one Creative Director.

Updates if/when we receive them.

We Hear: Movement on the Ashley Furniture Review

347-02-38-35-Francesca-Sofa-Loveseats-ashley-furnitureMore than a month ago, AdWeek brought you news that national plush couch chain Ashley Furniture had launched a creative review.

Today we heard a couple of things from our sources about that review:

  • Ft. Lauderdale’s Zimmerman, which served as the company’s AOR since 2009, is out

At least two parties remain standing:

Since this isn’t a small account (Ashley is offering more than $50 million in yearly media spending), we expect to hear more on the review soon.

For context, in 2012 the chain chose Ryan Partnership as AOR for the launch of its spinoff chain, literally named “ZZZ’s by Ashley.”

We Hear: Cuts at Mullen…

mullen-ogWe’ve heard your whispers–which turned into shouts this morning–regarding changes at Mullen.

Los Angeles ECD Peter Rosch left the agency several weeks ago, and one tip names CCO Mark Wenneker as his replacement.

Multiple reports place the total layoffs that occurred yesterday in the 15-20 range; these cuts appear to be based strictly or primarily in the agency’s Boston office.

We’ve received no official word from Mullen, but based on the volume of helpful hints we assume that a basic restructuring followed Kristen Cavallo‘s recent promotion.

Updates to follow if/when we get them.

We Hear: Cavallo Promoted to Prez at Mullen?

KC1Nearly three years after officially joining Mullen as chief strategy officer, Kristen Cavallo is moving up the ranks according to those in the know on the Spy line. Word on the street is that Cavallo, who works out of Mullen’s Boston HQ, has been promoted to president of the agency (in her second stint).  As CSO at Mullen, has led planning, biz dev and analytics efforts for a range of clients including JetBlue, Google, Acura, Adidas and Zappos.

Prior to Mullen, Cavallo spent well over a decade at the Martin Agency, last serving as SVP/planning and development at said agency, where she led efforts for clients including Pizza Hut, Expedia, Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola and Miller. During her career, Cavallo has also worked on the planning side at the likes of Arnold Worldwide.

We Hear: Sid Lee’s Perkul Heading to O’Neill?

sidleelogo1Word from a few folks on the Spy line is that Doug Perkul, who’s spent the last three-and-a-half years at Sid Lee and the last two as managing partner at its Amsterdam office, is leaving for a client-side gig at O’Neill. No confirmation from the Sid Lee camp on this as of yet, but we did get some vague responses from those in the know that the agency’s relationship with the surf/lifestyle brand dates back to last October when Sid Lee developed some ideas for O’Neill at the latter’s request. From what we’ve been told, the ideas were well-received and a bond was formed between agency and client there after, though no word yet if an official partnership was formed.  But yes, that’s pretty much all she wrote thus far. Whatever the case, it appears all is amicable and we should find out more about Perkul’s potential new gig at O’Neill (we’re hearing CMO) in the next couple of weeks.

Prior to Sid Lee, Perkul founded and served as managing director of his own NYC-based creative boutique agency, Schatzi, and also had a stint as a digital producer/account lead at R/GA. We’ll keep you posted when the fog lifts from this tale, but if you know more in the meantime, give us a shout.

We Hear: Burbary Out at LCE?

kenburbaryThere’s no official word as of yet, but a phone call or two tells us that Ken Burbary is no longer at Lowe Campbell Ewald, where he’s spent the last two years working out of the agency’s Detroit-area office as chief digital officer. The CDO gig was not Burbary’s first rodeo at what was then Campbell Ewald, where he originally spent nearly a decade in the late 90′s onwards and eventually served as SVP/chief technology officer. In between his two stints at LCE, Burbary served as VP/group director on the strategy/analytics side at Digitas. We’ll keep you posted when we find out more.

We Hear: Droga5 NY Also in TripAdvisor Mix

tripadvisor1

Droga5 New York is saying “no comment” on the matter (which usually translates into anything but “no” at this point), but sources on the Spy line tell us that agency has joined the pitch for TripAdvisor, the 14-year-old travel directory/review/booking brand that launched yet another creative agency search at the beginning of this month. According to earlier reports, TA launched the review after partnering for less than a year on offline creative work with The Fantastical, a Boston-based shop formed by a a pair of Mullen alums. Along with Fantastical, TripAdvisor has also worked with Hill Holliday and Weber Shandwick on media and PR efforts, respectively, though it appears that neither agency is affected by this latest review. From what Adweek initially reported, other agencies allegedly in the TA review mix include Goodby and Leo Burnett NY. We’re checking with all and will keep you posted.

While we’re on the Droga5 tip, we’ve received from clarification from those in the know that unlike what we’ve been hearing today, there have been no formal layoffs in the NY office, just a few reductions that were performance-related.

We Hear: Is Brian Wallace Out at Motorola?

Brian-Wallace We’ve reached out to the Motorola camp on multiple tries and haven’t succeeded but sources tell that Brian Wallace, who joined the Google-owned company barely a year ago, is no longer there. Here is one of several comments we’ve received: “Razorfish took on Motorola when Brian Wallace went there, while still working on Samsung. They did the Motorola work under the name Digitas (and still are).  Media planning/buying is being done by the real Digitas (NYC office) but the rest is Razorfish Chicago and Austin. Some key individuals were working on both at the same time [names redacted]. Samsung was not happy about this. Legal got involved. Went on for a while; Razorfish knew that Samsung would wind down the biz and move on, and it was so.”

Oy, if you recall, Wallace’s relationship with Razorfish dates back a few years, during the time he worked at RIM and served as VP/global digital marketing and media for the latter brand. Prior to his most recent gig, Wallace served in a similar VP/strategic marketing role at Samsung.

We Hear: \MAL Loses a Pair of GCDs

muelasmalWe received a straight-up “no comment” when we inquired with camp TBWA, but word from various sources is that Hector Muelas and Ricardo Viramontes, who spent nearly a year at TBWA\Media Arts Lab as group creatives directors, have moved into CD roles at Apple. Of course, you know that the brand and agency unit have been working together as exclusive partners for years so a move such as this doesn’t seem so shocking. Prior to their time at \MAL, Muelas and Viramontes spent nearly a year at B-Reel and have both worked at the likes of Creative Artists Agency and W+K during their careers. We’ll let you know if and when we hear more.

We Hear: Is This Why Samsung Parted Ways with Razorfish?

samsunggalaxynote

You might recall that over the summer, Samsung moved its U.S. digital business from Razorfish to R/GA and now, all of a sudden, we’ve been filled with tips possibly about the reason why. According to sources familiar with the matter, there were conflicts of interest at hand. We hear senior execs on Razorfish’s mobile biz (we won’t name names at this point as we’re still checking on things) had also pursued the relaunch of Motorola–a direct competitor–not too long after head Samsung marketer Brian Wallace , who we’ve been told brought on Publicis Groupe-owned Razorfish to its roster while he was the former company, left for a similar role at Motorola late last year.

The kicker is that our sources say that Razorfish worked as fellow Publicis Groupe digital agency Denuo in order to maintain the Samsung biz and technically handled both Samsung and Motorola at the same time, hence the boot. Oy vey, it sounds like a mess and we’re looking into it, though our sources in the know actually worked on the account but we’ll try to get some more info on the matter. Feel free to chime in below.

We Hear: Charnock Out at R/GA?

charnockWell, after making a phone call to “the agency for the digital age,” we learned that William Charnock was not in the company directory, which perhaps tells us what tipsters have been saying since last night, that R/GA’s chief strategy officer has parted ways (or vice versa). Charnock was appointed as chief strategy officer nearly four years ago at R/GA, working out of the agency’s New York headquarters.

We’re double-checking with the agency’s PR folks, but prior to his time at R/GA, Charnock spent nearly eight years at JWT, last serving as director of strategic planning/co-head of strategic planning out of the agency’s Big Apple hub. During his career, the exec held various planning director roles at the likes of BBDO, what was FCB and Ogilvy London/New York.

We Hear: Trojan Drops The Joey Company?

This seems kind of odd considering the kudos DUMBO-based The Joey Company received for a Trojan campaign launched just a few months ago (above) from the likes of Buzzfeed  and Adweek, but we’ve received multiple tips over the last 24 hours that the brand has parted ways with the DUMBO-based agency. Inquiries to the Joey crew have been left unanswered and we really didn’t make any inroads either with Trojan parent company, Church & Dwight, which could only serve up this measly statement: “Church and Dwight does not comment on the status of our agency partners and the brands they work on.” We’ll keep checking on the matter as we’re also hearing that another client relationship may be on the rocks at Joey. As for C&D, along with Trojan, the company also houses brands including Arm & Hammer, Nair and Orajel.

We Hear: Did W+K Win Some Cherokee Work for Jeep?

jeepcherokee

We have no idea, but we’ve received several tips about this and contacted Wieden+Kennedy on this, which referred to the client for inquires. Here’s what sources familiar with the matter tell us: “There are no details on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee advertising campaign at this time.  Global Hue remains the Jeep brand’s agency of record.”As far as we know, this is W+K’s win but if you know more, please let us know. We’re told it’s for the 2014 Jeep Cherokee 2014 model launch biz. We’ll keep you posted if we hear more.

We Hear: What is Going on at Razorfish? (Updated)

Razorfish hasn’t been the most communicative as of late, but we’re checking in on this as we’ve received multiple tips from various sources that the agency cut staff in it the central/SE region, specifically offices in Chicago, Austin and Atlanta. While we await some sort of comment/clarification, our spies tell us that approximately 25 staffers were affected across departments including some VPs. We’re hearing a certain major digital account loss in recent weeks might be to blame, but we’ll of course update as soon as we hear more. Stay tuned.

Update: Asked and received. Here’s a statement from Razorfish that maybe clarifies things: “As with all successful professional services organizations, we regularly adjust our staff levels and skills mix to align with current client needs. In keeping with that strategy, we did have to adjust staff levels in a few of our offices, which totals less than 2% of our North American staff. We will, however, continue to bring new talent and new capabilities into the agency to ensure we exceed client expectations.”

We Hear: KSL Media Shutters Ops? (Updated: Yes)

We’ve been deluged with tips over the last 12 hours that bi-coastal agency KSL Media, shut the doors of all of its offices including the main operations in NY and LA. Perhaps the writing was on the wall as last we heard from KSL, which was just a couple of weeks ago, CEO Hank Cohen and president David Sklaver both left the agency. Calls to the NY office this morning were left with an automated message that “your call cannot be completed as dialed.” Hmm. From what we gather via the tips we’ve received, KSL has declared bankruptcy and from what those on the Spy line say, “all employees terminated with no severance.” KSL was founded over 30 years ago and worked with clients including UGG and Guitar Center during the span. We’ll keep you posted if we find out more.

Update: Yes, sources familiar with the matter tell us that the decision was made yesterday to close their doors.

Update 2: Here is the Chapter 11 announce that KSL is bankrupt. We’re hearing that certain issues with a higher-up may have had something to do with it.  link

We Hear: BNY Mellon Launches Review?

Well, when a client “declines to comment,” one starts to wonder, but anyways, multiple sources have told us that Bank of New York Mellon “is going to put [its] entire account into review” according to folks on the Spy line. The BNY Mellon global creative biz has been handled by fellow Big Apple-based operation Doremus since fall 2011. From what we’ve been told, Doremus has “declined” to continue serving as global AOR on the BNY Mellon business, which at the time called for the agency to integrate the brand’s TV, print and digital advertising in the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.

We Hear: Did Erwin Penland Nab CIT Duties?

Ah yes, we relish the thrill of the chase, especially when even the client has “no comment” on the matter. But yes, as we delve further into the rabbit hole, multiple tipsters, sources and the like have told us over the last 24 hours that Erwin Penland has nabbed creative AOR duties for CIT, the 125-year-old, NY/NJ-based financial institution focused on small business and middle market companies. Yes, it’s that sexy. Anyhow, CIT has worked in the past with the likes of Mobile, AL-based Red Square Agency and NYC-based B2B shop, Desantis Breindel.

Folks on the Spy line tell us that following a review, Erwin Penland won AOR duties for CIT, including digital, branding, and retail. If it’s official, that would mark the second notable win for the Greenville, SC-based agency, which took over on sole ad duties for Denny’s last month. We’ll keep you posted if and when we hear more.

We Hear: What’s Going on at West Studios?

We first inquired about this two weeks ago when the tips came in and have yet to hear back, but there seem to have been some notable defections in recent times from West Studios. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, West is the San Francisco-based shop that was launched two years ago by former Apple global marketing communications head, Allison Johnson, and was initially co-funded by Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey (we’re being told that Dorsey has since distanced himself from the company). During its initial launch, West was headed up by Johnson, former Martin Agency GCD Keith Cartwright and Katalyst digital head, Sarah Ross.

Well, as tipsters have pointed out, the latter two are no longer at West and in fact Cartwright doesn’t even acknowledge his time at the operation on their LinkedIn profiles. Of course, these aren’t the only notable departures from the SF shop in recent months. Travis Britton, former Cutwater principal/ECD who joined West as chief experience officer last year, has parted ways as has COO, Amanda Kelso (former W+K ECD Todd Waterbury was also in the mix but is now of course serving in the same role at Target). And today, we’re hearing that a major client is on the outs with the shop. We’re putting in more inquiries to the rather secretive West Studios, and will try to clarify what the state of the union is as soon as we hear more.
