We Hear: West Loses Some Business

Last month we reviewed TechCrunch’s review of the homepage of West, the San Francisco ad agency co-founded by Twitter’s Jack Dorsey. The general consensus: it didn’t show or tell us much of anything at all.

This week, we’ve received a few anonymous notes about the state of things at West and, like the vast majority of the tips we receive here every day, they weren’t particularly positive.

We’re still waiting to receive a word from the people behind the rotating images on the West homepage, but our tipsters tell us that several tech clients no longer count West as their AOR.

Specifically, this claim applies to tumblr, Rdio and Jawbone. We can’t confirm that these clients are no longer with West because we can’t confirm much of anything about the agency at the moment. But we did find some work apparently commissioned by West for photographer Todd Cole:

We’re still waiting to hear from whoever monitors the agency’s given email address. Also: apologies, on Google’s behalf, to West Advertising of Alameda.

TechCrunch Unimpressed by West Agency’s Homepage

SF West

Today we learned that TechCrunch blogger Kyle Russell doubles as an advertising critic. More specifically, he criticizes the websites of ad agencies.

There’s a reason he was interested in this one: it’s West, the San Francisco shop founded by former Apple marketing chief Allison Johnson and top Facebook PR Brandee Barker with a bit of capital from Twitter originator Jack Dorsey.

About a year ago, we posted on West in response to tipsters’ claims that all the real ad people hired to staff the agency were leaving. West’s web presence doesn’t help clarify that matter, because it provides absolutely no information about the organization itself.

Still, Russell lingered on the page long enough to call it “a new champion in the endless battle to have the most pretentious startup website.”

72andSunny Launches Campaign for Square Featuring Little Dudes, Shih Tzus

72andSunny has unveiled a rather minimalist new campaign for Square, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey‘s mobile payments company.

The campaign is made up of 15-second spots, each of which begin with a dual colored screen with text on each side representing a merchant and a customer, followed by a card swiping through Square Register. In “Surf Instructor” (featured above), for example, the left-side of the screen reads “Dude,” while the right side reads “Little Dude.” The card is swiped through the Square Register on the right side of the screen, followed by a short scene of an enthusiastic young surfer in training. All of the spots follow this basic formula, demonstrating the kind of small business transactions Square’s product can open up for people in a simple, easy to understand way that perfectly matches the campaign’s message about the simplicity of using Square. Check out “Stylist” below to see a shih tzu getting a haircut, and stick around for “Designer” after the jump.

We Hear: What’s Going on at West Studios?

We first inquired about this two weeks ago when the tips came in and have yet to hear back, but there seem to have been some notable defections in recent times from West Studios. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, West is the San Francisco-based shop that was launched two years ago by former Apple global marketing communications head, Allison Johnson, and was initially co-funded by Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey (we’re being told that Dorsey has since distanced himself from the company). During its initial launch, West was headed up by Johnson, former Martin Agency GCD Keith Cartwright and Katalyst digital head, Sarah Ross.

Well, as tipsters have pointed out, the latter two are no longer at West and in fact Cartwright doesn’t even acknowledge his time at the operation on their LinkedIn profiles. Of course, these aren’t the only notable departures from the SF shop in recent months. Travis Britton, former Cutwater principal/ECD who joined West as chief experience officer last year, has parted ways as has COO, Amanda Kelso (former W+K ECD Todd Waterbury was also in the mix but is now of course serving in the same role at Target). And today, we’re hearing that a major client is on the outs with the shop. We’re putting in more inquiries to the rather secretive West Studios, and will try to clarify what the state of the union is as soon as we hear more.
