This Agency Pulled Off the Vending Machine Stunt to End All Vending Machine Stunts

Tricked-out vending machines have become the vehicle of choice for brand to push all sorts of zany promotions or social media stunts. We’re almost to the point where if you see one outside of its natural habitat, you assume it’s going to do something out of the ordinary if you just … wait for it.

Well, Canadian agency Taxi noticed that trend, too, and takes an amusing cynical stance on it in this video—yet another hilarious industry spoof from Strategy’s Agency of the Year event. Take a look below as unsuspecting passersby encounter this mysterious machine—which, well, actually does kind of surprise folks.

Tired of Not Having a Grocery Store, Village Engineer Invents a Vending Machine

The town of Clifton in central England hasn't had a grocery store for almost 15 years, so a local engineer invented a giant vending machine that dispenses milk, eggs, bread, toiletries, pet food and even umbrellas for the village.

Refrigerated compartments keep perishables cool and a "basket" system allows bottles and egg cartons to be dispensed without breaking or spillage. Located in a parking lot, the unit's brick motif and awning make it look somewhat like a traditional English village shop. It takes cash and credit cards and boasts various security features (alarms and such).

Creator Peter Fox hopes the machine is the first of many. It carries no advertising, but that's probably just a matter of time.

Coke Creates Virtual Vending Machine That Only Appears for Couples

Coca-Cola loves smart, bossy vending machines. It loves them so much, it helped turn them into an entire marketing category.

This year, the brand brought back its Valentine's Day edition, further escalating the arms race to develop manipulative beverage dispensers.

Actually a virtual vending machine projected on a wall, this iteration would only appear for couples, helping single people feel even worse about being alone. According to the case study video (which, of course, is the real point of activations like this one), the machine also personalized sodas by putting the couple's names on cans.

But the core concept is pretty much a rehash—back in 2012, another Valentine's Day Coke Machine only dispensed sodas to couples who would prove they were together by necking in front of it. So refusing to even show the new machine to solo passersby is really just an extra twist of the knife. Seriously, just look at the poor chump staring at the blank wall, at the end. No soda for you, lonely boy.

For Free Chocolate, Strangers Must Hold Hands in Argentine Vending Stunt

Concerned that technology is keeping us all apart, Milka chocolate created a unique vending experience this summer that made Argentine strangers work together to score free sweets. Local agency David placed a cow statue across from a vending machine and challenged people to connect the two by holding hands in order to get free chocolate bars. Each time they cashed in, the cow moved farther away, requiring more people to hold hands until they spanned across the public square. The resulting video, with more than 1 million views, is another example of how one smart idea on a small scale can quickly go global. Considered alongside Milka's current "Dare to be tender" campaign in France, where missing squares of the chocolate can be paid forward to loved ones, it’s not all that shocking that a comfort food would latch onto the comforting notion of bringing people together. Of course, it's togetherness fueled by a good old-fashioned bribe.

Stand Still for 3 Minutes and This Vending Machine Will Give You Free Beer

Sentient vending machines are all the rage right now. This Amstel spot out of Bulgaria adds the latest twist to the share-baiting trend—forcing antsy consumers to actually stand still in one place for three minutes if they want a free beer. The point? Take a break from your busy day. Really, it's like all the others in that it's just another way to waste your time and maybe have a little fun. But at least it doesn't make you bow to it. All we can say is that if we were Kit Kat, we'd be pretty pissed that we didn't do this first.

Coffee Brand Pours You a Free Cup When You Yawn at Its Vending Machine

Vending machines have been developing unique personalities for some time. We've had generous ones, sadistic ones, patriotic ones. Now, we've got an exceedingly empathetic one. Check out the video below from a South African airport, where coffee roaster Douwe Egberts rigged up its vending machine with facial-recognition software to dispense free cups of coffee to anyone who yawned. It's a nice stunt that turned those yawns to smiles. The fittingly named agency behind it: Joe Public. Via Foodbeast.
