If you’ve ever recorded yourself, you know that there are few things more awkward and vulnerable than those first and last moments.
Even if you’re comfortable on camera, there’s a singular strangeness in starting or ending a clip where you’re either in frame or scanning around to find the best angle. As a result, most of us understandably edit those parts out of the finished product.
But not Tyce Hoskins.
The young art director and filmmaker realized there’s an intimacy and honesty in these beginnings and endings, so he edited together his own such moments into a 2-minute video, which he calls GoPro & I:
You probably know your pug’s idea of a good time is snatching a hot dog from some hapless man. You might not know the lengths to which your pug is willing to go to get there.
GoPro has spared no expense in traveling the world to create pulse-pounding footage that reminds us we’re living hollow lives devoid of excitement. Now, an everyman office drone has decided to prove that corporate drudgery is just as exciting as being hugged by lions or eaten by a grizzly bear.
The resulting clip has rapidly become a hit on Reddit, where it has nearly 5,000 net upvotes in the Video subreddit. There, the creator explains that he works at a real estate firm and “waited till it got quiet to film the printer/bathroom/kitchen stuff.”
“My worst fear,” he wrote, “was walking into the bathroom with a GoPro on my chest and seeing someone at the urinal like WTF dude?”
Being a little kid is the best. Everything is new and different, the world is your oyster, and you don’t even know it. And your first snow day … wow, words can barely express the magical bliss for a toddler.
GoPro does it again, this time with a perfect vignette of a California brother and sister’s first snow day in Vermont. First, we see Quincy rollicking around having an amazing time, and then Stella, who looks to be just old enough to talk, gets on a camera-mounted sled, and we experience her mind being blown on her first ride down a hill. Her reaction is truly priceless.
GoPro filed paperwork on Monday to sell shares to the public, offering clues about how it navigated the treacherous waters of the digital photography business.
Considering its position as the No. 1 brand channel on YouTube, it's really of no surprise that this insane video comes from today's prime purveyors of adventuretime content, GoPro.
What appears to be a lovely day on the slopes turns into a pretty thrilling minute of footage as skiier Eric Hjorleifson documents his terrifying run with a head-mounted Hero 3+ camera.
Take a look below and be sure to watch this full-screen, with your headphones on. The skiier's breathing really completes this bone-chilling experience. Then you can go back and watch GoPro's even more terrifying 2011 avalanche video, which is one hopefully no one will try to top.
If you still needed proof that selfies have taken over the Internet, here's a telling infographic about how brands went into pic-snapping overload in the past year.
To help promote the upcoming deadline for entries (Feb. 18) in The Shorty Awards' Best Facebook Campaign category, contest sponsor Unmetric decided to analyze how major businesses embraced the selfie in all its ego-stroking glory over the course of 2013. From Target and Samsung to Aflac and Beggin' Strips, all manner of brands created selfies or hosted selfie-centric promotions, with the numbers climbing steadily throughout the year.
While relatively few of the branded selfies are truly compelling, a few worth noting are GoPro's image from a fan atop Mount Everest, shown above, and Samsung's #TogetherWeRise campaign, which created a massive mosaic of LeBron James out of selfies submitted by fans.
No evento, sete cameras GoPro HERO2 documentaram o pulo.
When we heard GoPro was going to be a Super Bowl advertiser again this year, we were prepared for something epic. And while the event the camera brand chose to feature is definitely a monumental moment, it's also … kinda old.
GoPro today unveiled its 30-second Super Bowl spot, which shows the first moments of skydiver Felix Baumgartner's 24-mile plunge to the earth way back in October 2012. Baumgartner and sponsor Red Bull used seven GoPro cameras to document the Stratos jump, and GoPro's Super Bowl ad serves mostly as a teaser to the eight-minute short film created from all that footage. (Which you can also see below.)
Leveraging this partnership to create Super Bowl ad content makes sense on one level, but the decision also banks on the hope that Red Bull itself hasn't already sucked all the marketing marrow from the bones of this extensively publicized event.
Even last October, Red Bull released its own nine-minute video recapping the jump from Baumgartner's point of view. While the new Stratos video hosted on GoPro.com reveals a few new angles, it's essentially just the same thing we saw last October, which was the same thing live viewers saw a year before that.
In a statement, GoPro acknowledges that it's treading a bit of a worn path, but the brand is confident the Stratos jump still has a lot of excitement to offer:
"While many people are familiar with the Stratos event, what most don’t know is that GoPro rode shotgun during the jump, documenting every moment with seven HERO2 cameras. We want audiences to understand the insane versatility of GoPro cameras, from baby walkers (see our Baby Dub Step Super Bowl commercial from last year) to outer space. We want them to experience the Stratos event again, for the first time, through our video story, and with the out-of-this-world imagery that only a GoPro can deliver."
Millions have viewed Red Bull's footage, but clearly there are millions more who missed the hoopla the first few times around. Will they be impressed with GoPro's example of the great heights its devices can reach and document? Or will they miss the GoPro logos and just wonder why Red Bull is still running an ad from 2012?
GoPro's new promotional video for its HERO3+ Black Edition camera is a lovely pastiche of epic things white people dream of doing: whale diving, falconry, desert rock climbing, impressing native peoples with technology, and lion cuddling, just to name a few. Aside from the climbing sequences triggering my vertigo, it's a real treat to watch, and while not as emotional as that firefighter with a kitten, definitely shows off the clarity and wide-angle capabilities of this camera. How you'd film yourself doing any of that stuff without breaking something or dying is another issue entirely, though.
