Without A Career In Advertising, Life Can Be Dull

Even on its worst days, working in an ad agency is still quite fun compared to the dreariness of regular corporate America. That’s the point of this promo website and video for The Creative Circus featuring a fictional company called B.E.I.G.E.

What You Need You Have To Borrow

If you’re currently growing up in New York City, you can get a big head start on a career in advertising.

In the mold of Fiorello H. La Guardia High School of Music and the Arts, starting next fall there will be a new public high school in Brooklyn for those interested in pursuing careers in advertising.

According to Ad Age:

The New York City Department of Education has approved the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media. It will be located on the campus of Canarsie High School in Brooklyn and is expected to be up and running by September 2008.

Organizers hope the school will hook young minorities on a career in advertising, which has long been criticized for its lack of diversity.

I was 29 when I figured out I wanted a career in advertising. But if I was 15 and living in the future in Brooklyn, I’d want to go to this school. Then I could skip college, polish my book at Miami Ad School, get hired by a shop in Amsterdam (where Lions roam free) and eventually head to London for the money.

Upgrades At The Industry School

Ad Age has breaking news out of Richmond.

Effective Jan. 14, the Richmond, Va.-based VCU Adcenter, founded in 1996, will be called VCU Brandcenter. It also is unveiling a new logo, courtesy of New York-based design firm Collins, as well as a website, www.brandcenter.vcu.edu, created by Interpublic Group of Cos.’ RG/A, New York.

Following lengthy debate, faculty, board members and students concluded that association with advertising was too limiting and that the school needed a broader name to reflect the rapidly changing industry landscape in which the school’s graduates find employment, said Rick Boyko, managing director of the VCU Brandcenter.

VCU Brandcenter also dropped $9 million to move to a new building, tapping world-famous architect Clive Wilkinson to lead the effort. Wilkinson partnered with local firm Baskerville to transform a historic 27,000-square-foot building in VCU’s Monroe Park campus into an open, airy space with a modern feel.

Boyko hopes the changes will help the school further set itself apart from the pack of portfolio schools and traditional academia by more closely aligning itself with an evolving ad business.
