Dear CFO: This is why I should go to Cannes (according to the Cannes Lions)

With the Cannes International Festival of Creativity just a month away, organizers have released a “Convince the CFO” kit with resources to help people get the OK to attend from C-suite typesincluding a ready-made letter and a “budget-holder friendly week plan.”

“We don’t ever meet people who don’t want to go to Cannes Lions, but as with any investment you have to form a case to attend to those who are the budget holders,” Clare Hill, Cannes Lions’ director of marketing and brand, wrote in an email. She said the kit went up earlier this month, aligned to the festival’s “key delegate booking period.”

The kit, Hill said, has had over 500 downloads, and that “even some of the world’s global CMOs have downloaded it. Each year, over 1,000 delegates who are under 30 years old attend the festival and we want to make it as easy as possible for businesses to invest in their future talent.”

ACLU tells Amazon to stop selling facial recognition tech to police

Amazon drew the ire of the American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday over a facial-recognition system offered to law-enforcement agencies that the advocacy group says can be used to violate civil rights.

In marketing materials obtained by the group, Amazon Web Services says its Rekognition system uses artificial intelligence to quickly identify people in photos and videos, enabling law enforcement to track people.

“Amazon’s Rekognition raises profound civil liberties and civil rights concerns,” the group said in a statement. “Today, the ACLU and a coalition of civil rights organizations demanded that Amazon stop allowing governments to use Rekognition.”

LG dominates digital video with three spots on this week's Viral Chart

In an unusual display of dominance for any brand, LG campaigns for its TV sets and the overall corporate brand took first, second and third place on our latest weekly chart of the most-viewed video campaigns online. Not only did a video promoting LG Nano Cell’s wider field-of-vision TV technology repeat at No. 1, but an LG brand campaign debuted on the chart at No. 2 and another TV ad climbed to No. 3 from No. 8.

Together they comprised nearly 64% of all views in the top 10.

As ever, the chart includes not only the organic views that most people think of when they hear the word “viral” but the paid views that advertisers secure by buying pre-roll, mid-roll and other video placements.

JC Penney CEO responsible for marketing cuts leaves for Lowe's

The CEO at JC Penney is leaving the struggling department store chain to take a new gig at Lowe’s. Marvin Ellison, who joined Plano, Texas-based JC Penney four years ago and has recently reduced marketing expenses for the brand, is staying on until June 1. The next day, he’ll assume responsibilities as chief executive of Lowe’s Co., in Mooresville, N.C. The current leader of Lowe’s, Robert Niblock, is retiring.

Investors reacted swiftly, sending JC Penney shares down 6 percent in Tuesday morning trading. The stock is currently trading near $2.35. Last week, JC Penney reported disappointing first-quarter earnings, with comparable store sales up only 0.2 percent.

Ellison, a former Home Depot executive, took over JC Penney at a time when the retailer was suffering the aftereffects of a reinvention disaster led by former CEO Ron Johnson, who eliminated coupons and ostracized core JC Penney shoppers. While Ellison is credited with helping the brand regain some of its sales in a difficult shopping environment, he has also been reducing marketing expenses in recent months. Last week, on an earnings call to announce first-quarter sales, Ellison said the company has been shifting more dollars into digital in order to be more nimble.
