Unilever Squeezes Ad Production by $700 Million, But Speeds Sales


Unilever squeezed around $700 million out of production costs last year by making fewer ads and doing more work in-house, according to numbers cited by executives in today’s fourth-quarter earnings report.

Those savings accounted for most of the improvement in the operating margin for the world’s second-biggest marketing spender last year. Unilever put less than half the production savings back into media and in-store marketing, while taking most to the bottom line. Couched as “production,” the squeeze largely affected work done or overseen by agencies.

Instagram Brings Carousel-Style Ads to Its 'Stories' Section


Instagram is becoming a key platform for Facebook on a number of fronts, including as a counter to the popularity of Snapchat among younger audiences. And it’s seen as inoculated form the types of problems affecting Facebook, like toxic political posts and false news.

As people spend less time on Facebook itself, apparently due to its recent algorithm changes, Instagram continues to grow in importance for advertisers. Sheryl Sandberg, chief operations officer at Facebook, highlighted the success of Instagram and stories on Wednesday, after Facebook announced quarterly results and the drop in time spent on its main property.

Sandberg said Instagram Stories were “powerful” for the business.

AI Robots Mock Verizon Customer in Sprint Super Bowl Spot


Sprint revealed its 60-second spot for the Super Bowl on Thursday, or just one day after releasing two teasers about its plans for the big game.

Creative agency Droga5 produced the video, which shows a scientist of sorts recording notes on the progress of Evelyn, an advanced AI robot with some shades of the film “Deus ex Machina” to her. Evelyn interrupts her creator after her smartphone sends her a reminder that the bill is due.

“Doctor, I still don’t understand why you have unlimited with Verizon,” she says. “Why wouldn’t you switch all your lines to Sprint? I’ve analyzed the data. Sprint’s network reliability is less than a 1 percent difference than Verizon’s, yet you choose to pay twice as much.”

Avocados from Mexico Puts Its Account in Review Ahead of 4th Straight Super Bowl Campaign

Avocados from Mexico, the not-for-profit marketing arm of Mexican Hass Avocados Importers Association (MHAIA) and The Association of Growers and Packers of Avocados From Mexico (APEAM), has placed its creative advertising business in review, according to sources close to the matter.

The RFP went out in recent weeks, and the first round of agencies has been chosen to compete for the account. We do not currently have the full list of shops involved.

The organization formed in 2013 to promote avocado consumption among the general market, Hispanic market, food service, and retail segments. It picked Arnold over Grey and BBDO as its first agency partner in May of that year after 52 agencies submitted pitches.

The business later went to Omnicom’s GSD&M in 2015, which created the brand’s first Super Bowl spot that year after a review that was not publicized at the time. Avocados has run an ad in the Big Game each year since then, with last year’s edition starring Jon Lovitz and this year’s featuring Chris Elliott.

It is unclear whether the incumbent will defend.

A GSD&M spokesperson deferred to the client, which declined to comment by way of its PR firm. Select Resources International, the agency search consultancy reportedly managing the review, has not yet provided a statement or confirmation.

Kantar Media’s latest numbers have Avocados from Mexico spending $20 million on paid media last year and $12.6 million during the first 9 months of 2017.
