Hulu’s Ad for Its New Stephen King Series, Castle Rock, Will Creep Out Super Bowl Viewers

Hulu has whipped up an unsettling ad for Super Bowl viewers for a second year. After last year’s Big Game spot for The Handmaid’s Tale, which gave audiences their first look at Elisabeth Moss enduring a dystopian nightmare, Hulu is back at it again Sunday with a creepy ad for its upcoming Stephen King-inspired anthology…

NBC Sports Says Super Bowl Advertisers Weren’t Scared Off By This Season’s NFL Protests

This year’s 10 percent decline in NFL ratings didn’t keep advertisers from paying more money than ever before–north of $5 million–for a Super Bowl ad. And while some NFL advertisers expressed concern over coverage of national anthem protests during the regular season, their anxiety didn’t spill over into Super Bowl ad sales. Last fall, some…

Hulu Promotes Stephen King/J.J. Abrams Series in Creepy Super Bowl Ad

The TV network that airs the Super Bowl in any given year doesn’t let rival broadcasters buy big-game time to promote their newest series. Yet, in the last several years, they have opened their doors to streaming video platforms, who are arguably bigger threats, to advertise original series.

Hulu and Amazon’s Prime Video will both use NBC’s airwaves on Sunday to promote upcoming series during the game. It is unclear whether Netflix will join them, after running its first Super Bowl ad last year to promote “Stranger Things.”

The Super Bowl networks apparently view streaming services much the same way they see cable networks, which they occasionally let advertise in the game. The History Channel, for example, was able to promote “Swamp People” in 2012 (“This Is Your Boss”).

Quicken Loans Returns to Super Bowl, Two Years After Backlash

Two years after running a Big Game spot that sparked a fair amount of backlash, Quicken Loans is returning to the Super Bowl. The Detroit-based brand is running a 60-second ad in the second quarter of the game on Feb. 4 to highlight its Rocket Mortgage product.

“The timing is right,” says Casey Hurbis, who joined Quicken as chief marketing officer last spring after six years with Fiat. “We launched Rocket Mortgage and introduced it to the world two years ago and it’s been growing and maturing. Now’s the time to be back in front of 140 million people and share what we’ve been up to.”

Hurbis declined to comment about any celebrities featured in the ad, which Quicken will not release until after the game.

Pepsi's Retro Super Bowl Ad Includes Glimpses of Britney Spears, Michael Jackson

Pepsi is going “Back the the Future” with its 2018 Super Bowl ad, which takes a quick spin through decades of the brand’s brushes with pop culture, ranging from the DeLorean time machine that one-time Pepsi endorser Michael J. Fox used in the classic 1980s film franchise to quick clips of pop stars like Michael Jackson and Britney Spears.

As previously teased by the marketer, the spot also makes a reference to Cindy Crawford’s iconic 1992 Pepsi Super Bowl spot, but this time her son Presley Gerber appears in place of the two gawking boys from the original. Jimmy Fallon supplies the voiceover for the ad, called “This is the Pepsi.” NBC’s late-night comic will also narrate a 10-second countdown to Justin Timberlake’s halftime show, which is sponsored by Pepsi.

Other celebs appearing in the 30-second Super Bowl ad include motorsports legend and PepsiCo endorser Jeff Gordon, as well as Pepsi’s “Uncle Drew” elderly basketball star character, played by NBA star Kyrie Irving.
