Icaro Doria Heads to Boston as Arnold’s New Chief Creative Officer

In case you missed it (you didn’t), Arnold remedied a four-month absence of creative leadership atop its organization by hiring Icaro Doria as U.S. CCO.

The former DDB New York chief creative replaces Jim Elliot, who left in March amid a big restructuring across the Havas global network. He has yet to pop up in a new job, and it does not appear that his global CCO role will be filled. We did hear at the time of his departure that he wasn’t fired but left because of the new Havas hierarchy, with Arnold creatives reporting to Jason Peterson at Havas Chicago.

Here are your statements from Arnold global CEO Pam Hamlin:

“With outstanding creative credentials and a unique ability to inspire those around him, Icaro is a critical addition to the Arnold Worldwide leadership team. With a proven track record of delivering impactful campaigns, reinvigorating company culture and managing and growing international agencies, he is a true creator and will be an immediate asset to Arnold and our clients.”

From Ari Weiss at DDB:

“Icaro is a tremendous creative talent and I wish him the best. We have big plans in store for DDB N.Y. and look forward to telling the next chapter of our resurgence story in the weeks to come.”

And from Doria himself:

“Arnold’s commitment to its clients, culture and creativity immediately drew me in. Arnold has created some of the world’s most iconic brands, so I’m excited to see how we can now build on this legacy with this new chapter. I am proud to join an agency that thinks differently and maintains a constant desire to learn and innovate.”

He’s got a bit of work to do as Arnold has been very quiet lately, especially regarding new business and executive hires.

John Bruning Joins WPP’s Mirum, Garage Team Mazda as Technical Director

WPP digital agency Mirum has hired John Bruning as its new technical director.

Bruning will oversee all tech teams on the company’s Mazda America account, meaning he will work across both Mirum and Garage Team Mazda, the Costa Mesa-based agency established in 2010 and dedicated to the client.

Here’s a fun line: “John’s role will involve overseeing the health, happiness and productivity of technical teams involved in Mazda North America across all offices from both a Mirum and The Garage Team Mazda perspective.”

His career to date has primarily concerned software development roles, but he spent a good bit of time overseeing the Mazda account at Hearst agency iCrossing, so he’s quite familiar with the organization.

“For over a decade, I was technical lead on the Mazda account under iCrossing,” Bruning said. “And it’s amazing to see how the brand and the product line up has started to transform into a more sophisticated and smart alternative to premium. I’m excited to be back working on Mazda, as the Technology Director, under Garage Team Mazda and Mirum. And look forward to helping further the brand.”

He replaces Sasha Pfandt, who had been Mirum’s VP of engineering before heading to Delphic Digital in Philadelphia earlier this year.

Earlier this year, Garage Team Mazda hired Erich Funke as its new chief creative officer replacing Harvey Marco, who left last fall.

The latest news from Mazda concerns an internal combustion engine that the company claims will be 20 percent more efficient. Garage Team will, presumably, soon produce campaigns repeating that claim.

It’s Good to Be King (Kong) in Deutsch’s Latest VW Campaign

Now that the guilty pleas have started rolling in on the Volkswagen fake emissions scandal, it’s time to remember what that company does well: make and promote new cars!

The decade-old Tiguan SUV gets an update for 2018 and a corresponding campaign from Deutsch’s L.A. office. Two new spots launched this week as part of a larger effort titled “The New King of the Concrete Jungle,” the basic idea being that the Tiguan can help you, the consumer, master city life.

“The New King” follows a certain inflatable ape who can’t resist the color “blood orange” or the always-hip sounds of ELO.

The best part of that ad for us was figuring out which New York City suburb this woman calls home. Looks a whole lot like Jersey, but she’s driving down the East Side, so … Westchester?

She also appears to be headed north on the BQE for a bit, but nobody outside of the five boroughs will notice that incredibly small continuity issue.

The next punk rock Mary Tyler Moore spot concerns one former office drone’s career trajectory and her cherished parking spot, another rarity in the Big Apple.

That one was also fun, with the nameless coffee drinker reflecting on her rise and her new place in the parking lot, several yards closer to the door.

She’s very fortunate to have made it after all, given that we now know those of the female gender are biologically predisposed to “neuroticism [which] may contribute to the higher levels of anxiety women report … and to the lower number of women in high stress jobs.”

You know, jobs like vice president. What a world.

The Giant Chicken From KFC’s Marietta, Georgia, Store Springs to Life in W+K’s New Film

It’s not every day you get to see a building in the shape of a giant chicken, let alone one that can get up and walk away. But that’s the delightfully hallucinogenic conceit of a sweet little five-minute animated short from KFC and Wieden + Kennedy, celebrating the renovation of one of its marquee restaurants…

A Man Spraypainted Hate Tweets in Front of Twitter’s Office After It Failed to Delete Them

To properly vent his frustrations with Twitter’s lax hate-speech policies, Israeli satirist Shahak Shapia went analog, spraypainting some of the vicious Tweets he’s received–and reported to Twitter–right outside Twitter’s German headquarters. By his count, Shapia has reported 300 tweets for containing “serious threats of violence, homophobia, xenophobia or Holocaust denial,” and only heard back from…

‘25 Annoying Things About Being Pregnant’ Is Lighthearted and Funny, Until It’s Not

Big Chicken Small Movie

The citizens of Marietta, GA take fried chicken seriously. In 1963, Georgia Tech architectural student Hubert Puckett designed the town’s BIg Chicken landmark for what was then called Johnny Reb’s Chick, Chuck and Shake. According to the Atlanta Constitution Journal, KFC considered tearing down the bird structure in 1993 after high winds damaged it, but […]
