P.M. Dawn’s Doc G, David Bruce ‘Hold the Crown’ for HTC

Doc G of P.M. Dawn fame appears alongside HTC America Senior Marketing Manager David Bruce in a new rap video for the brand declaring the HTC One as the “greatest smart phone ever created.”

Thankfully, Bruce limits his role in “Hold the Crown” to silent hype man, leaving all the rhyming to Doc G. How you feel about the spot’s over-the-top self-satire will depend largely on your tolerance for the (perhaps a bit overused) parody rap video trope in advertising. Still, HTC stands out from the pack by hiring a real rapper and hitting the right balance of self-satire and promotion. Doc G and Bruce even manage to work in plugs for the phone’s extreme power saving mode, gorilla glass and “boom sound.” No word yet as to whether this was created in-house or with agency Deutsch.

GSD&M’s Sheehan Joins A3

Last Friday we posted on a senior-level staffing change at Austin’s GSD&M, and today we learned that Glenn Sheehan moved to neighboring A3 Creative.

Sheehan — who worked in digital with McCann Erickson before holding top creative positions at AKQA, Wunderman/Y&R, and Austin’s own T3 and serving as SVP/GCD at his previous agency — is now SVP and managing director at A3.

From the agency’s own Facebook page:

Glen says he chose to work with A3 Creative and CEO, Dee Dee Ritzinger, because she built the agency around a collaborative model that extends from our team to our clients. “Strategic creativity is not just about designing an engaging marketing presence,” Sheehan mused, “but should help solve problems that make a positive difference for clients. That is what energized me to want to be a part of A3 Creative and help grow the culture and the impact we have for our clients.”

We are inspired by Glen’s guiding beliefs, impressed by his depth of digital knowledge and excited about him being a part of our team.

A3 is a smaller business that specializes in design and web development services for a largely local client base.

These Super Bowl Ads Recreated in Lego Are Actually More Fun Than the Real Thing

Just when we thought we were Super Bowl’d out, we find something that makes the takes the magic of this year’s ads and reimages it—IN LEGO!

British animation house A+C Studios is behind the Brick Bowl—a three-minute journey through some of this year’s Super Bowl ads, edited together as a story. It took them 36 hours following the final whistle to deliver the video, which it calls “a new take on the world’s most expensive advertising space.”

Take a look below as some of the most memorable spots (nine to be exact), including Snickers, Toyota, T-Mobile and Bud Light, are transformed into Legos! To prove they weren’t cheating, there’s even a mini-Katy Perry halftime show.

They left out the Nationwide kid. But that’s because everything is awesome.

HTC's Absurd Rap Anthem Is So Joyously Bad, You Have to Love It

“We own the universe. Galaxy is overrated.”

If you enjoy that level of hyperbole from a scrappy smartphone underdog like HTC, you’re going to love the brand’s ridiculously self-indulgent new rap video, “Hold the Crown.”

Touting the HTC One as nothing less than “the greatest smartphone ever created,” the song features rapper Doc G, best known for joining legendary hip hop and soul group P.M. Dawn during its 2005 comeback.

The video is certainly laughable, but it was clearly made with an admirable level of self-satire. My favorite stanza: “Make like them nerdy bloggers. Put it in your pocket now.”

Doc G’s costar (shown above) is actually HTC America senior marketing manager David Bruce, and you can watch the two of them chat about their mutual love for the Taiwanese brand in the interview clip below.

Holy Tongue Cleaners, Orabrush Team Spins Off

Brands need YouTube content and advertising, but where do they turn to procure this modern form of communications currency? Ad agencies are changing, but few have crossed the bridge from making TV for a passive audience to making video for an active, empowered audience. One way to find a video provider is to discover who […]

The Mariner Lighting Collection

I have to be honest, my initial reaction to this ad was “We’re celebrating absent fathers?” You see, I listen to lyrics of songs, and that’s what the Cats in the Cradle is about.

Kevin Reilly Splits TBS and TNT Programming in Bid to Redefine Originals

As one of his first moves at Turner Broadcasting, Kevin Reilly is splitting TBS and TNT’s original programming team into two separate units.

It’s the first step in Mr. Reilly’s goal of ramping up original programming at both networks. Mr. Reilly, who previously led the entertainment division at Fox, was named president of TBS and TNT and chief creative officer of Turner Entertainment in November.

His hire semed to suggest that TBS and TNT would redefine their programming strategy to better compete with the likes of cable rivals AMC and FX. Turner’s flagship entertainment networks, while having broad appeal that attract large viewerships, haven’t won the same critical praise as rivals like those and aren’t commanding big dollars from streaming platforms. Much of TBS’ success, for example, has come from reruns of “The Big Bang Theory,” rather than original comedies.

Native Ads Were 'Inside' 10% of Digital at The New York Times Last Year

The New York Times’ native-advertising product Paid Posts comprised “inside of 10%” of the company’s digital-ad revenue last year, according to Meredith Kopit Levien, executive VP-advertising at the Times.

Digital-ad revenue in 2014 climbed 11.8% to $182.2 million.

That would mean the Times sold up to $18 million worth of native ads in 2014 — or “inside” that number, anwyay. A Times spokeswoman declined to elaborate.
