Pandora Opens Listener Data to Let Musicians Target Fans

Pandora, the world’s largest internet radio service, is giving musicians free access to the data it stores about their biggest fans.

Pandora, which reports third-quarter results on Oct. 23, already uses the listener data for advertising purposes. It has helped political candidates decide where to advertise for the upcoming election.

Starting today, the more than 125,000 artists on Pandora will be able to view detailed information about their songs’ popularity, breakdowns of the audience based on age and gender, and a map that shows where listeners are located. The data can be used to plan tour and set lists and better target fans, Pandora said in a blog post.

Little Girls Drop F-Bombs for FCKH8, Feminism

Activist t-shirt brand FCKH8 has stirred up some controversy with a new video that features little girls dropping f-bombs left and right (and seemingly having a blast while doing it).

The point of the profanity is that gender inequality should be more offensive than a child saying the word “fuck,” but it also serves to draw attention to the message, which otherwise offers up facts that aren’t anything new if you’ve been paying attention. The girls address such issues as the wage gap, objectification and sexual assault. The most shocking moment comes not from the girls use of profanity but when they say one in five women will be a victim of rape and sexual assault and then count off and wonder aloud which one of them it will be.

Unsurprisingly, FCKH8?s video has met with its fair share of criticism. The profanity proved too much for YouTube viewers, and the site has since removed the video. It lives on, however, at Vimeo, where the comments section is ripe with accusations of child exploitation (FCKH8 is a for-profit company) and open misogyny. Of course, the video was designed to stir up controversy and draw attention to the company, which donates five dollars from each fifteen dollar t-shirt to charities, so the backlash is entirely expected.

“Some adults may be uncomfortable with how these little girls are using a bad word for a good cause. It is shocking what they are saying, but … the big statistic that one out of five women are sexually assaulted or raped is something society seems to find less offensive than a little four-letter word, and we love how these girls draw attention to that imbalance,” video producer Mike Kon told Adweek.

Funnily enough, Adweek points out that FCKH8?s PR team couldn’t bring itself to be as brazen as the girls in the video, censoring the word “fuck” in its official press release.

Snickers Gives You an Early Halloween Treat With This Truly Twisted Ad

Halloween is like Christmas for candy brands, and Snickers usually swoops in, batlike, with some fun and spooky advertising (most notably, perhaps, BBDO’s truly odd “Grocery Store Lady” spot from 2010).

And this year, it’s Spanish-language Snickers spot that’s giving people chills.

Everything about the ad is great—the premise, the visual effects, the guy at the end bellowing about his TV show. A real treat from LatinWorks.

Ikea's Parody of The Shining Is Devilishly Good

Heeeeeere’s … Ikea’s parody of The Shining!

BBH Singapore re-imagines the spooky hallway scene from Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic in this spot-on 90-second Halloween ad. Instead of a haunted hotel, however, the little kid peddles around a spooky Ikea store late at night. Nice touches include eerily flickering lamps and ghostly diners in the kitchen display, and the word “REDRUG” above, yes, a red rug. It goes on a tad too long, just like the movie it’s based on.

The point of the spoof is that Ikea stays open late (until 11 p.m.) for your shopping pleasure, and it’s also is part of a social-media contest to win gift cards. So, when you chop down your door in an axe-wielding frenzy, you can get a replacement for less at Ikea.

Ikea has done plenty of scary-good promos lately, from hilariously pitching its 2015 catalog as “cutting-edge” technology (also by BBH Singapore) to inviting shoppers to spend a night in one of its stores to challenging them to climb this amazing outdoor apartment/wall.

Assembling its furniture, of course, remains a frightening experience.

Finalmente!

NAI Head Marc Groman Exits; FTC Ramps Up Privacy Focus with New CTO

One of the oldest digital advertising self-regulatory privacy groups, the Network Advertising Initiative, has lost a leader just as the Federal Trade Commission has named a tech consultant with a strong privacy pedigree as its chief technology officer.

NAI President and CEO Marc Groman will leave the 14-year-old trade body following a three-year stint in that position; the NAI is home to an online system that lets consumers opt out from behavioral advertising. Meanwhile, the FTC is reinforcing its focus on digital data privacy issues by bringing Ashkan Soltani into the fold.

Mr. Soltani is well known in digital privacy circles as an independent research consultant. He has a history with the FTC, having served there as staff technologist for the Division of Privacy and Identity Protection. He’ll replace current CTO Latanya Sweeney, who plans to return to Harvard University; she founded and directs the school’s Data Privacy Lab. Ms. Sweeney’s research has homed in on de-identification and re-identification, or the ability to decipher an individual’s identity despite the fact that de-identification measures have been implemented.

How Brands Can Outsmart the Mobile-App Rush

The mobile ecosystem has given rise to some of the most innovative companies that the tech sector has ever seen. These platforms — Uber, Flipboard, RunKeeper and Square to name a few — touch every aspect of our lives from healthcare to transportation, entertainment and productivity at the office. It’s hard to imagine that Apple’s app store launched just six years ago. In such a short timeframe, some mobile apps have become a cornerstone of all of our lives. In fact, half of you are likely to be reading this article from a smartphone or tablet.

To build a successful app, you need to evolve your strategy past the “build it and they will come” mindset, and “growth hacking” will only take you so far. Instead, you need to develop a sustainable long-term strategy. Here are some things to consider:

Campbell's soup dressed up for Halloween

Now your kids can have spooky soup thanks to Campbell’s Can Costumes. Chicken and Stars become Ninja Stars or Princess Magic. Chicken Noodle Soup becomes Mummy Bandages. Tomato soup? Either Mad Scientist Potion or Vampire Soup. There are even more, with two options for four of the (presumably most eaten by kids) flavors.
Super fun idea that not only promotes Campbell’s but imagination, too. Nice one, Campbell’s.
