Droga 5 Taps Stephen Merchant in ‘If We Won’ for Newcastle

Since it’s hard to market a British beer on July 4th, Stephen Merchant implores viewers to enjoy a Newcastle while celebrating “Independence Eve” on July 3rd and imagining how great it would have been if Great Britain had won the Revolutionary War in a new online spot from Droga 5.

Entitled “If We Won,” the spot sees Merchant trying on an “incredibly convincing American accent” before asking, “Do you really still have to celebrate your emancipation from us? That’s like your girlfriend breaking up with you and then celebrating with fireworks. Every year. For 300 years.” He then goes on to list all the ways America would be better if it were still a British colony, including “better comedy, news, TV programs,”  and way better curse words.

“In the late 1700s, colonial Americans risked life and limb to fight for their freedom,” Newcastle Brown Ale Brand Director Quinn Kilbury told Adweek. “Today, we’re running the very real risk of people totally not getting the joke here, and we think that’s pretty patriotic.”

Judging from a cursory glimpse at the YouTube comments section, that was a very real risk indeed. Stick around for limited credits after the jump.  (more…)

Supreme Court Rules Against Aereo in Broadcasters’ Challenge

Citing copyright law, the justices rejected 6-3 the streaming service’s model of capturing broadcast signals and delivering them to subscribers.

BarkBox Brings 30 Seconds of Sweet, Sweet Dog Butt Into Your Living Room

Is there anything dogs love more than a good dog butt?

BarkBox, a monthly gift subscription service for dogs, has been experimenting with advertising directly to man’s best friend. And its latest attempt to get inside the canine cranium is nothing more than 30 seconds of staring directly at a dog’s butt. The company even went so far as to have an actual dog-butt casting call to find the perfect doggy derriere.

The view from behind should look familiar to dog owners who are used to having dog butts shoving into their face on a daily basis. And from the completely unscientific testing that I tried, dogs seem very happy to look at another dog’s butt on a screen.

Of course, it’s gotta be kind of a tease to look at that sweet, sweet dog butt and not get a single sniff.

5_stages_cannes_lions_grief.jpg

And so it has come to pass. Once again. Another year. And no Lion to boost your ego. Depression sets in. You question your worth as a creative. You blame your clients for killing your brilliant ideas. You blame the judges for awarding one of the highest honors to an ad that celebrates selfishness. You promise yourself you will leave the ad business and go where your creative brilliance is truly appreciates.

You are going through the 5 stages of Cannes Lions grief. To help you navigate that treacherous path, check out this Tumblr from art director Giovanni Greco.

You will walk through the 5 stages; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. It probably won’t help at all but at least it will take you mind off your depression for a minute of two.

In an age of mobility, outdoor media is the second screen

As the importance of both “context” and “mobility” come into their own in the media, outdoor stands to reap the benefits, says Chris Forrester.

Why Vizeum is introducing term 'co-owned' in the media mix

There Are Many Terrible Ad-Tech Names, But This One Is the Worst

Not only did Qriously win Ad Age’s “worst name in ad-tech” poll, but the company was so eager to talk about its awful name, a spokesman sent three emails to Ad Age looking to claim its prize as the “winner” — an interview.

When that interview happened this Monday, it got off to a fitting start.

“Congratulations on winning Ad Age’s poll for worst ad-tech name on earth,” said an Ad Age reporter to Qriously co-founder Chris Kahler after brief small talk.

Eject From 'Helicopter Marketing': Stop Hovering Over Your Data

For a long time, one key to being a successful digital marketer was sheer doggedness. Across the industry, conference rooms were crammed with exhausted people, impossible-to-read whiteboards and stacks of Microsoft Excel printouts.

More sites, devices, tactics and algorithms in the system just meant there were more things you had to check and double-check.

A generation of “helicopter marketers”

Aereo Ruled Illegal by Supreme Court

Aereo was ruled illegal on Wednesday by the Supreme Court, which held that the company’s technology letting subscribers stream and record broadcast TV using without the broadcaster’s permission infringes on the networks’ copyright.

Justices ruled 6 to 3 that Aereo is equivalent to a cable company, not merely an equipment provider. It wasn’t clear how the justices’ usual ideology would play out in a case about technological innovation and copyright, but in the end it was three of the court’s most conservative members who voted in favor of Aereo: Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. Stephen Breyer, John Roberts, Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan ruled against the company.

It’s a resounding victory for broadcasters such as CBS, NBC, Fox, ABC and allies such as the NFL, which argued that Aereo steals networks’ signals and would have forced broadcasters and major sports out of over-the-air transmissions to protect their intellectual property.
