Wongdoody Re-Signs Dennis Lee as ACD

The Los Angeles offices of Wongdoody have expanded by one.

Today the Seattle/L.A. agency announced the hiring of Dennis Lee as associate creative director.

Lee won’t be a completely new presence in the office, though: he previously served a six-year stint at the agency before working as ACD at Ogilvy & Mather Los Angeles. His career also includes roles in the art departments of Ogilvy New York and Young & Rubicam.

He will work closely with ECD and fellow Art Center College of Design alumni Pam Fujimoto on accounts including Scion, VIZIO and Epson.

Most importantly, he will “get to wear shorts and basketball shoes everyday”. Priorities.

Supermarket Chain Apologizes After Advertising on Iconic Sculpture

U.K. supermarket chain Morrisons has issued an apology after being accused of offending consumers in the north of England, who found a marketing stunt incredibly tasteless.

Over this weekend it projected a 175-foot-wide image of a baguette, with the slogan “I’m cheaper at Morrisons,” onto the Angel of the North sculpture in Gateshead, northeast England. The iconic 65-foot-tall steel sculpture, by the artist Anthony Gormley, has become synonymous with the area and is well-loved by Northerners, despite being controversial when it was first unveiled in 1998.

After an outcry on Twitter, the retailer took to the medium to apologize.

Expedia Helps Three Strangers Complete Their Mutual Friend’s Bucket List

Fulfilling the bucket list is a popular activity for brands to piggyback their message on. But how many of them are fulfilling the list for someone who's already died?

Expedia is helping fund Ty’s List, a documentary about three people (who had never met before) trying to live out a list of life goals created by their mutual friend, Tyler Lorenzi, as a way to find closure for his sudden death in a boating accident at age 23.

Although it doesn't spell it out in the trailer below, Ty's list of the best places in San Francisco is also completely achievable by the average Expedia customer, so this isn't a project that requires millions of dollars to fly to outlandish places and experience outlandish things. But while it might be affordable to accomplish, filming it is another matter, and the filmmakers continue to raise the funds needed to finish the movie. The video they made for Expedia was aimed at helping kick off the new round of fundraising, which also includes a new Kickstarter.

This expansion on the "Find Yours" campaign is far better than the stunt the brand pulled last year, sending random people to random places. That had surprise, but what we really travel for is other people—whether it's to connect with new ones or reconnect with those we already know.

And luckily for Expedia, that's also what we look for in a good commercial.

Microsoft Global Media Director Joins Ad Tech Startup

Today we received news that true[x] media, an L.A./New York-based “engagement advertising platform” company, had signed former Microsoft global media director Meredith Brace as its new director of sales for the Northwest region. Brace, with more than 15 years experience at Microsoft and HP, will run the company’s new Seattle office.

We were interested in learning more about why Brace made the move, so we got her thoughts regarding trends on the media side of the industry.

Brace says:
“I have spent many years on the client side looking at solutions to major global marketing challenges.

In my experience, media buying is getting polarized.

Chinese E-Commerce Giant Alibaba Files for What Could Be Biggest-Ever IPO

Alibaba Group, which rode China’s emergence as an economic superpower over the last 15 years to become a massive online marketplace for everything from forks to forklifts, filed today for what could become the largest U.S. initial public offering ever.

Founded by former English teacher Jack Ma, 49, in a Hangzhou apartment, Alibaba started with a few dozen items for sale. The company might raise as much as $20 billion, topping a $19.65 billion offering by Visa in 2008, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Alibaba didn’t specify the number or price of shares it will offer or what valuation it will seek. Those details will be provided closer to the actual sale. The filing has a $1 billion placeholder amount, which used to calculate registration fees and will change.
