Bullova Accutron—It’s Not A Timepiece, It’s A Conversation Piece

Mad Men season seven debuted on AMC last night. While it is a fictional show, it’s also instructive about the actual ad business in ways that Bewitched and other pop culture looks at the industry are not.

… SPOILER ALERT …

Season seven opens and we find that Don Draper is banished from the agency for a time. There is an imposter in his place. Entertainment Weekly describes the poseur like so:

Lou Avery is calling the shots, and he’s everything that Don was not. He dresses like Mr. Rogers, chuckles at his own corny jokes, and brags about his “peachy” weekend chopping firewood. Most importantly, he is immune to Peggy’s charms. We know this because he tells pesky Peggy, who is sure she knows better than anyone, “I guess I’m immune to your charms.”

Ah, Peggy. Where fore are thou? The show’s female hero—the bright counter to Don’s dark anti-hero—is distraught. She’s been spurned by a married man (who happens to be a partner in the agency where she works), her landlord thing isn’t working out and now she has to smile while pitching the biggest oaf in fictional advertising history. Bleh.

Mad-Men-Season-7-Peggy

The sad reality portrayed by this fiction is people who don’t belong in the role of creative director sometimes end up there despite themselves and against all logic. When this occurs, things can unravel pretty rapidly.

Let’s watch the digression of a tagline for Bullova watches, as it took place last night’s episode, “Time Zones.”

Don (speaking through Freddy): “Accutron. It’s not a timepiece, it’s a conversation piece.”

Peggy: “Accutron, it’s time for a conversation.”

Lou Avery, the imposter: “Accutron is accurate.”

“Accutron is accurate.” Now, that’s going to sell Swiss watches! Yet, when Peggy fights for the work, she’s rudely shot down by the doofus CD who wonders aloud at his own ineptitude, “Why would you put something in front me that you don’t want me to pick?”

The best line does not always win. The best idea does not always win. However, in this made-for-TV dramatic series, I do believe Peggy and Don’s good ideas will surface once more as winners. They may need to break off from the corporate hegemony of Sterling Cooper to re-achieve greatness, but ideas and people with ideas will be free. In 1969 and always.

Cops Aren’t There to Check Your Balls for You, Cancer PSA Reminds Guys

In every sense, testicular care is a delicate matter. So while it can be a bit weird and uncomfortable to feel yourself up every so often, nonprofit Testicular Cancer Canada makes the point that it's each guy's job—and no one else's—to check his balls for lumps.

In addition to reminding us that this is no role for police and mechanics to play, the ad also makes a really good case for why we should be glad it isn't. Gentlemen, we've all had this moment, but very rarely with officers of the law (that said, I'm not here to judge). Watching this alternate reality, I find myself wondering, what do they feel as they do this? Emotionally, I mean.

Anyway, the two commercials in the series make a great pair. They're ballsy and a little bit nuts. The campaign rocks, is what I'm trying to say, and even though Canadian agency Grip Limited produced it pro bono, it's worth the family jewels. Testicles.

Does Woodford Reserve’s Bourbon Ad Liberate or Discriminate?

Woodford Reserve bourbon debuted its first-ever TV campaign during AMC’s “Mad Men” on Sunday night. And by Monday morning, the Brown-Forman-owned brand was already dealing with charges that the debut ad is sexist.

The spot features a female voice-over explaining her feelings when she sees a man drinking bourbon and how she expects him to be “the kind who can build me a bookshelf.” The line causing the most debate is her assertion that “he’ll let me use the saw and not find it cute that I don’t know how to use the saw.”

Among those complaining on Twitter was Kat Kinsman, managing editor of CNN’s food blog, Eatocracy.

Working Not Working Now Lists Full-Time Jobs Too

wnwlogoanimated1

Former ad man Justin Cignac‘s attempts to improve the job market for creatives are now a bit more comprehensive.

The original purpose of the project Working Not Working was to empower agency-bound creatives to “free themselves from self-promotion” by going freelance and to help those who hire them “stop conducting exhaustive searches when qualified creatives are ready and waiting.”

Yet, after conducting an internal survey which found that “80% of the freelancers on the site would leave their beloved freelance lives for ‘the right’ full-time role”, Cignac and team created The UnJobBoard.

Not only are the gigs listed on UnJobBoard official–they’re only visible to the community’s own “vetted talent”. The team also worked to simplify them in order to avoid those lengthy, wallpaper-dry job descriptions that no one reads in the first place, helping employers to create custom posts quickly and manage them alongside lists of their favorite freelancers.

The gigs listed currently run from internships to one ECD position.

Screenshots after the jump.

Samsung CMO Todd Pendleton Says Advertising, Not Copying, Toppled Apple

Samsung’s top U.S. marketer, Todd Pendleton, claimed it was his team’s work — not any copycat products — that allowed his company to unseat Apple at the top of the world smartphone market.

Mr. Pendleton, the CMO of Samsung U.S., was among the first slate of witnesses Samsung called in its defense of a $2 billion suit from Apple for copying various technology features.

Last week, as the dramatic patent trial between the two smartphone juggernauts rolled on, Samsung offered us a peek at the internal frictions over advertising at Apple. On Monday, Samsung rubbed it in further.
