Job Network’s Malaysian Airlines Newsjacking Goes Horribly Wrong

teamwork_online_malaysian_tweet.jpg

This one will go down as one of the worst examples of newsjacking since newsjacking was invented. Or, maybe since anything was invented. The idiocy is simply incomprehensible. TeamWork Online, some kind of sports industry job network, thought it might be a good idea to riff off the Malaysian Airlines flight 370 disappearance.

For it’s weekly Coaching Tip, the site wrote, “Malaysian Airlines 370 has vanished. Do you feel like employers can’t find you? Let’s get your ‘black box’ engaged. Let’s start the ‘pings.’ ‘Here are some tips on how to get noticed in a very crowded job market’ says Buffy Filippell, TeamWork Online Founder.”

When UnMarketing’s Scott Stratten called the brand out for its idiocy, they replied, “We meant no disrespect. Within minutes of noticing this we changed reference in the emails.” To which, Stratten replied, “Noticing it? It wasn’t a typo.”

Every brand wants its shining marketing moment in which it deftly leverages current culture or news in it communications but the utter lack of common sense displayed in this case is beyond belief.

Netflix Calls for Stronger Net Neutrality Rules

Netflix on Thursday called for a “stronger form” of net neutrality to keep broadband providers from charging companies fees to maintain a good quality experience, effectively asking for legislation against the kind of deal it struck with Comcast last month.

Consumers face poor service if Netflix and other online video providers don’t agree to pay internet service providers such as Comcast and Verizon Communications for priority connections to their networks, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in a blog post on the company’s website.

“Netflix performance has been constrained, subjecting consumers who pay a lot of money for high-speed Internet to high buffering rates, long wait times and poor video quality,” Mr. Hastings said.

Yannick Bollor Denies Havas is in Talks With Vivendi

Havas CEO Yannick Bollor talked about options for the French communications group’s future — and the possible impact of a Publicis Omnicom merger — in a conference call covering full year results for 2013.

Mr. Bollore, son of the group’s biggest shareholder, Vincent Bollore, presented Havas annual results for the first time. He was promoted to CEO in January 2014 after the departure of predecessor David Jones to start a tech business.

He didn’t rule out any options for the group’s future, but Mr. Bollor seemed to prefer the idea that Havas would invest in entertainment and content options as a way to find a niche for itself once the combined Publicis and Omnicom group is approved, likely to be later this year.
