After Reading This, You Will Never Speak Industry Jargon Again

jump_on_my_extension.jpg

The folks over at Space150 have created yet another slaying of industry jargon, business buzzwords and all those other idiotically insipid things we all say to each other as we go through our work day.

But with Industry Terms of Endearment, out just in time for Valentine’s Day, Space 150 has taken seemingly innocuous business blather and coupled it with imagery. The results may shock you into never speaking like this again. Or at least, give you a giggle when you do.

The Invasion Of Fingers

Magazine Tablet Editions’ Top Ads of 2013: You Don’t Need Bells and Whistles

Magazine brands have been on the iPad since the start, striving to find the best ways to engage readers with tablet-ized versions of their articles and ads. After nearly four years, what works best?

To find out, GfK MRI Starch Advertising Research measured 27,099 ads in 784 tablet magazine issues published last year. We surveyed readers of specific magazine titles and issues to determine how many of them had noted specific ads and how they used any interactive features.

Although many of the most-noted ads invited readers to play videos or pull up websites, it turned out that many were just as static as in print. Placement and exclusivity seemed to be at least as important. Ad positions in the first 10 pages of a tablet issue performed particularly well. And ads that had some or all of the issue to themselves climbed to the top of the rankings.

Draftfcb NY Soundtracks Jamaican Bobsled Team

Yesterday we brought news of Draftfcb New York’s case study for the Jamaica Tourist Board. Well, that agency is feelin’ the rhythm and has just released a song for the Jamaican bobsled team, called, appropriately enough, “The Bobsled Song.”

The song was written by Sidney Mills and Jon Notar, “according to the shape and length of the actual race track” at Sochi, in order to act as a soundtrack to Jamaica’s run. What’s more, the song’s lyrics sync up perfectly with the lefts, rights, and straightaways of the course. This is best illustrated in the fun, mostly 8-bit video game style music video above. (Anyone else wish this game was real?) Everybody loves Jamaica’s bobsled team, thanks to Cool Runnings, and now there’s one more reason to watch Jamaica compete at Sochi. This Sunday, head on over to bobsledsong.com, tune in for the first heat at 11:15 AM, and the second heat at 12:45 PM, and play “The Bobsled Song” when Jamaica starts their run. Or follow @VisitJamaicaNow on Twitter for updates on when team Jamaica runs. It’s bobsled time. Stick around for credits after the jump. continued…

Toyota Realigning Marketing by Product, Rather Than Discipline

Toyota Division is overhauling its U.S. marketing operations and will require 80 employees to reapply for newly created positions or take a voluntary separation from the automaker.

As part of the changes, employee roles and responsibilities are being redefined to be more “integrated, flexible and efficient,” Toyota, whose U.S. operations have 6,100 employees, said in a statement late Thursday.

The automaker said the changes were necessary “in order to meet our future business needs, and support our dealers and guests more effectively.”

Most Interesting Man Eclipsed by Fake Bobsledders in New Dos Equis Ad

The Olympic athletes in this Dos Equis ad may just be actors (the Olympics won't let non-sponsors use legit athletes for advertising), but they still end up being the stars of this ad ostensibly about the Most Interesting Man in the World.

It's less an ad for beer and more of an ad for female bobsledding, since the women at the start of this video have gotten a lot of the attention. Gross, creepy attention, especially in the comments of the YouTube clip or whichever website is drooling over them, but attention all the same.

Far be it for me to say that the Most Interesting Man in the World has been upstaged, but he's definitely got some competition.

Draftfcb SF Nabs Trulia Biz

draftfcblogoAfter handling marketing efforts internally over the years, San Francisco-based Trulia, a company that essentially serves as an online real estate resource, is looking outward as it’s chosen Draftfcb SF as its first AOR, effective immediately. DFCB SF, which won following, yes, a “competitive review,” is now tasked with developing a fully integrated campaign that’s set to launch in second quarter of this year. No word yet on who else participated in the review (though Draftfcb did beat out seven other agencies), but Trulia CMO Kira Wampler says in a statement, “The Draftfcb team stood out during our selection process“The agency developed a strategy that demonstrated a thorough understanding of our consumer and category.”

Trulia now joins a Draftfcb SF client roster that currently includes Levi’s, EA, Taco Bell and Dockers.
