World-Traveling Copywriter Will Work for Free in Exchange for Room and Board

Need some copywriting help with an international flair? Does your hiring budget consist solely of expired Cliff Bars and six coupons for Vitaminwater? If so, I've got good news: You can still hire Mark van der Heijden.

Calling himself The Backpacker Intern, the Dutch writer is offering to intern anywhere that will provide him food and a place to sleep. "He doesn't want to get paid," his video explains. "He just wants to trade a day of his work for food and a place to sleep."

The pitch already seems to be working. On his blog, van der Heijden reports he has accepted internships with Amnesty International Thailand, followed by McCann Worldgroup Bangkok. "I’m getting a lot of responses from all over the world," he writes. "Beijing, Dubai, India, Stockholm, Dublin and so on."

If you're interested in luring him to crash on your agency's cot, check out his contact page on TheBackpackerIntern.com.

UPDATE: Looks like the offers started pouring in quickly after we featured van der Heijden's project:

Jaguar prepara estreia no Super Bowl

Coming To a Twitter Near You: Potato Chip Theater by Lay’s

Try acting out potato chip flavors, improvisational style, in front of thousands of social media followers. On Tuesday this will become the next career highlight — or lowlight — for Wayne Brady.

Last year’s contest was launched with a pop-up store in Times Square, in which the marketer displayed all 48 flavors of Lays in order to give consumers inspiration. Jennifer Saenz, Frito-Lay’s senior director-marketing, said Lay’s was satisfied with the interest the event got — more than 10,000 people stopped by — but was looking for more reach this year with the social-media stunt.

Explosion of Obamacare-Related Ads Likely As Glitches Fade Away

With improvements of the problem-riddled Healthcare.gov web site and a March 31 deadline for people to enroll in coverage this year, the Obama administration is ready for a blitz of advertising that is expected to cost at least $12 million and could go much higher.

But not high enough to include a Super Bowl spot, according to an official with the Department of Health and Human Services.

HHS, however, will be making a play in local markets during the winter Olympics.

AB InBev Puts More Marketing Muscle Behind Blue-Collar Busch

After heading for the mountains for decades and going fishing last year, Busch beer is trying to get real in 2014 as Anheuser-Busch InBev pours more money into the economy brand.

The investment starts with a new campaign that spotlights real people who “work hard at their jobs and in their communities,” according to the brewer. The effort, called “Busch Heroes,” comes as the beer industry at large is boosting marketing investment in economy brands, which have gotten less attention during the craft-beer boom.

As Ad Age documented last year, MillerCoors and A-B InBev had significantly curtailed measured media spending in recent years on the “sub-premium” segment as they sought fatter profit margins by encouraging drinkers to trade up to new, pricier brews such as Bud Light Platinum and Redd’s Apple Ale. While new products are still getting plenty of attention — along with crafts — brewing executives have begun to acknowledge that they need to start paying more attention to their cheaper, older brands.

How the Marine Corps Enlists Big Data for Recruitment Efforts

United States Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Raphael Hernandez is thinking about attending South by Southwest, the ever-expanding Austin music, film and digital-media fiesta to be held in March. Like countless corporations, brands and marketers, the USMC wants to learn about new approaches to media and data-driven marketing, bound to be a hot topic at this year’s event.

“We look for opportunities to attend conferences that may provide us an opportunity to interact with early adopters. “There’s definitely an interest in terms of my team attending,” said Lt. Col. Hernandez, assistant chief of staff for advertising for the Marine Corps Recruiting Command.

Today, the USMC analyzes data from the Department of Defense’s own prospect lists, direct interactions through email or digital ads, third-party demographic data, 2010 Census data, voter file data and behavioral and purchase transaction data from outside sources including Acxiom.
